When Can You Ski in Hokkaido?

Before you head to Japan to ski, make sure you know each resort’s operating dates. Some resorts even stay open into April. Japan’s ski season usually starts in December each year, but the exact dates you can ski vary by resort and region. Because Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost area, it’s also the earliest to kick off the ski season, with more reliable snowfall.

Every year, January and February are when snowfall is most consistent across most regions; it’s the golden window for skiing and the most popular time of the season. In March, while there’s still plenty of snow, the weather gets harder to predict as spring approaches; occasional warm days can affect snow quality. The ski season’s biggest crowds show up over Christmas and New Year, as well as during the first week of February.

Introduction to Skiing in Hokkaido

Which months are considered peak ski season in Hokkaido?

Hokkaido’s ski season runs from late November to early April of the following year, with the best skiing from mid-December through March, when the snowpack is deeper and the snow quality is better, perfect for skiing and other snow activities.

How much does skiing in Hokkaido cost, roughly?

Costs will vary depending on factors like the ski resort and lodging. The most basic expense is your lift ticket, which typically runs about S$40-100. Rentals for gear and apparel, ski lessons, and add-on attractions at the resort are priced separately based on what you need.

Lodging can fluctuate a lot, you can go with a budget hotel or splurge on a luxury resort, with double rooms ranging roughly S$120–300 per night.

Finally, there’s transportation. Since ski resorts are usually outside the city, you can drive yourself, book a private car, or take public transit to get there. Overall, plan on spending about S$200–350 for a basic one-day ski outing. And if you book discounted tickets and hotels through Trip.com, you’ll save even more!

Hokkaido Ski Resort Highlights

Why is Hokkaido a must for skiing? Because it offers unique features you won’t find at other ski resorts in Japan. Here’s a quick rundown so you’ll get it in seconds!

1. Premium powder snow: Hokkaido’s powder is world-renowned, drawing ski lovers from all over the globe! Thanks to its cold, dry winters, the snow is ultra light, so skiing in Hokkaido feels completely different from typical man-made snow—the ride is smoother and you’ll feel like you’re floating.

2. Longer ski season: Compared to other regions of Japan, Hokkaido the northernmost region enjoys a longer ski season, with snowfall that’s both abundant and reliably consistent. Not only does that make for a better experience on the slopes, but travelers can also enjoy a longer prime snow season.

3. Highly international: Hokkaido’s powder snow is famous far and wide, attracting skiers from around the globe, so its ski resorts have a distinctly international vibe. English-language tours and guidance are readily available, and ski resort facilities are fully equipped, making it easy for travelers from all over to fully enjoy the fun of skiing.

4. Ultra-soothing hot spring experience: Winter in Hokkaido isn’t just about skiing, soaking in an onsen is a can’t-miss highlight! Hokkaido is home to relaxing hot spring towns like Jozankei, Hoheikyo, and Noboribetsu Hell Valley, making it perfect for a winter getaway that combines time on the slopes with rejuvenating hot-spring soaks.

5. Stunning mountain scenery: Hokkaido is blessed with awe-inspiring natural beauty; as you ski, soak in views of Mount Yotei, nicknamed the "Hokkaido Fuji," and not only will it rejuvenate body and soul, but you'll also come away from your trip with plenty of Instagram-worthy photos.

Cheap Flights to Hokkaido

The top airport pick for Hokkaido is New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, with a flight time of about 3 hours and 50 minutes. We also recommend connecting through Tokyo or Osaka, since you might snag cheaper fares, and you can plan to visit two places in one trip—experience Japan’s diverse charms all at once!

You can take a bus to Sapporo International Ski Resort in the city. It is conveniently located and has a long history. There are equipment rentals in the resort. There are two charges for clothing, one is a gorgeous version of snow suits, and the other is a regular version. The staff explained carefully. There is a restaurant next to the entrance. If you go to Hokkaido in winter, it is worth a visit😊

At the beginner level, the coach skillfully explains the movements and techniques, so even those with poor athletic talent can gradually master them. Coach James explained enthusiastically and helped my girlfriend overcome her fear of climbing uphill. After completing the one-day course, she was able to climb uphill on her own and even slide down.

Japanese Room (2 Double Beds and 1 Sofa Bed and 1 Set of Futon) for 4 People
This is a review of Rusutsu Resort. Although it is located a bit far and took some time to get there, once we arrived, we were 200% satisfied in every aspect and had a perfectly relaxing stay! We visited with several family members this time, and the traditional-style tatami room was spacious and cozy, allowing us all to stay comfortably. The value for money was truly excellent considering the number of guests. The resort's accessibility to nearby golf courses (such as the Tower Course) was excellent, making it perfect for enjoying a pleasant round of golf. Even early in the morning, it was not a burden at all. The buffet we enjoyed in the evening featured a diverse menu and tasted outstanding, perfectly relieving the day's fatigue. All the staff treated us warmly and kindly throughout our stay, making us feel good until the very last moment. The facilities, meals, and service were top-notch in every aspect, enough to make us forget the distance. It is a place I would love to visit again with my family or a group.

Standard Twin Room With Extra Bed
This was my second stay at Rusutsu Resort Hotel. The last time was two years ago in winter, and this was my first summer visit to Hokkaido. It truly did not disappoint. The resort's restaurants and facilities maintained their high standards even though summer isn't peak season. There were also plenty of summer activities. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go to the outdoor water park. There were many activities for children, including rock climbing and some small crafts. We also participated in the whitewater rafting activity recommended by the resort. Children over six years old can participate. You can drive to the destination yourself (it only takes 20 minutes) or take the hotel shuttle bus (about half an hour). The entire whitewater rafting activity lasted about two hours. This experience was unforgettable for all of us, adults and children alike. Each raft had an instructor who was very professional and created a great atmosphere. The activity, which seemed thrilling, was actually very safe and brought us surprises and joy. We even paid extra for photos taken by a professional photographer, saving us the trouble of not being able to bring our own phones to take pictures during the activity. I highly recommend staying at this resort in the summer. The summer price is very cost-effective, about a quarter of the winter price. Staying at their resort allows you to truly experience the charm of Hokkaido in summer.

Traveling to Japan with my child, our first stop was the Water Chapel, which we'd missed on a previous trip. It's located right within this resort. We took the JR line from New Chitose Airport to Tomamu Station, a small, unmanned station. As soon as you exit, you'll see the hotel's white shuttle bus and welcoming staff. The ride to the hotel takes about ten minutes. The hotel is great, and the resort is nice too. There's even a special shuttle bus to the Water Chapel at night, though it's not a far walk anyway. The room didn't come with bottled water.

Small Superior Family Room-Tatami
It was alright. The all-inclusive package was very convenient. The room was a bit dusty... that needs improvement. I had to wipe the headboard myself every day. It was also a bit tiresome eating the buffet every day. 🤣 Going to another hotel for other meals required transportation and was subject to availability. Overall, it's a great choice if you're going skiing. You won't have to squeeze with crowds. This hotel is relatively small, so it's suitable for those who prefer quiet. We wanted to try horseback riding, but it wasn't available after 5 nights... disappointing. It's convenient to rent a car to get to the hotel and go out to eat on your own. On the other hand, this Club Med we tried was quite good. If you prefer a less crowded experience, we would choose this hotel again next year. Those with children should choose another hotel.

International cuisine and local specialties for three meals a day all day long: There are one or two dishes with beautiful presentation for each meal. Although the taste is just average, it saves you the trouble of worrying about your diet. In addition to the three meals, there are many other things such as croissant time, afternoon tea, and midnight snack time. Basically, there is something to eat during the waking hours. Service: The staff are all very nice. After the evening performance, there will be chess and card activities to play. It is very rich and easy to make new friends. Facilities: The hot springs are average compared to other places. It is better to buy two more packs of different bath salts from donki and soak in the bathtub in the room.

Superior Small Family Room
Ski in & out resort hotel, I have to say that staying in a hotel to ski is indeed convenient. I booked two nights, originally one day at Peak and one day at Grand, but later changed to two nights at Peak. But the decoration of the hotel is equivalent to Best Western abroad ※※Special mention※※We checked in on the 18th, and booked a bus to the airport on the 20th with the front desk that night. The front desk asked us to ask if there were seats the next morning. When we asked the next morning, we asked to confirm with the front desk again in the afternoon. We went to confirm again in the afternoon, but they said they would reply to us in the evening. When we asked again in the evening, we were told that it was full. Then, I would like to ask if I had a seat reserved on the first night or not? Or is this seat not allowed for us to book and is reserved for others? If you don’t want to book it, just tell us earlier so that we can arrange it, but don’t tell us Later, we called a car by ourselves, and after checking out, they didn’t ask if we were satisfied with the stay! The overall service is poor in Japan. These things are generally a poor experience!

The first ski-in ski-out hotel I’ve ever stayed and it is soooooo convenient! Also the first club med abroad I’ve been to (I am Chinese). Cuisines they prepared for the CNY were very very delicious even though there is only one buffet restaurant (two spaces, 1 western 1 oriental). I am very picky about foods yet but was able to find 1 or 2 very yummy dishes every meal. Wine list is good, but you need to pay extra for a good wine, priced okay, like 100K JPY for a bottle of 2018 petit mouton.

We had a wonderful family stay at Club Med Sahoro in April 2026 and would highly recommend it! The resort is beautiful, especially with the snowy landscape and great ski access. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for families. Our rooms were comfortable and well-maintained, and the overall value for a Club Med all-inclusive experience was excellent. A special highlight was my daughter’s birthday dinner. The restaurant manager, Benz, was fantastic — he went out of his way to make the evening memorable for her. Thanks to him, we had a really lovely and special celebration. The staff in general were attentive and friendly throughout our stay. We traveled as a family and left feeling relaxed and happy. We’d definitely come back!

Deluxe Tatami Family Room
We had a wonderful seven-day stay at Club Med with our children. Overall, the resort's facilities were a bit dated, and while hygiene was generally acceptable, the cleanliness of the towels could be improved, "even though we have a habit of bringing our own." What truly enhanced our experience was the resort manager, Heily. Her problem-solving skills were outstanding; she was quick-witted, clear-thinking, and always available to respond to messages instantly. She also possessed strong charisma and leadership. Despite the less-than-ideal facilities, her professionalism and dedication elevated the entire resort experience to a whole new level. This is precisely the spirit of Club Med that I believe in – not just facilities, but people, service, and values. That's why our family has continued to choose Club Med for so many years.

We went for 5 days and 4 nights with 2 adults and 2 children. We had a great time and look forward to coming again. We arrived in the afternoon. Because of heavy snow, all JR trains were stopped that day. It was said that the road to Sahoro was closed. After getting off the plane, the staff worked very hard to help coordinate the bus to other snow villages in CM. Before we got on the bus, the road was open. Finally, we upgraded the private transfer car to pick up the two families who arrived with us. The families who traveled with us were also very friendly. We arrived at the hotel after the scheduled skiing time. The next day, we decisively booked a private lesson and skied on the same day. The ski board is really easy to get started. The children fell in love with it at once. In the next two days, we had a lot of fun with private lessons and group lessons. We completely achieved our desire to enjoy the fun of skiing. The children were reluctant to leave. There are international buffets for three meals a day all day long, and there are different theme shows every day in the evening. It is a real holiday and relaxation trip, which has given me a lot of motivation for the next work. Hahaha

Club Med is generally very standardized, but the Sapporo branch still has its own unique charm. Many GOs speak Chinese, and almost all the cleaning staff are Chinese, which is very convenient. The mini-club is fantastic; we take the kids skiing every day. The kids especially love Instructor Kyle—he's very professional, attentive, and humorous. We took some ski photos of the kids, and the whole family loves them. A tip: you can reserve the hot pot dinner; even the non-special menu items are great, and it's free. Otherwise, eating the buffet every day can get really boring.

Tips & Guide to Skiing in Hokkaido

Snowboarding or skiing: how should you choose?

One question almost every beginner faces is whether to go with snowboarding or skiing. Below, we’ve outlined the key features of both to help travelers decide, but if you’re serious about getting into this sport, we still encourage you to try both for yourself or consult an instructor so you can find the style that suits you best!

Type

Highlights

Who it's for

Difficulty

Snowboarding

It's like surfing on snow, balancing with both feet. Riding with a sideways stance makes it easier to pull off tricks, and the gear is relatively affordable.

People who love doing tricks and have surfing experience

The learning curve is steep at first, but once you get the hang of it, the advanced techniques are relatively simple.

Skiing

Keep your feet apart for control, and with two ski poles to help, it's easier to stay balanced when you're just starting out. Skiing usually lets you pick up more speed and stay nimble when you're taking on runs of varying steepness.

Beginners and those who prefer higher stability and control

Easy to get started, but advanced challenges are tough

How to choose a ski resort?

Hokkaido offers an incredible variety of ski resorts. Beyond checking recommendations from other travelers online, you can also weigh the following factors to help you decide:

1. Ski runs: Hokkaido’s ski resorts typically have multiple runs, so take a close look at each resort’s descriptions and official website to find the ones that match your skill level. If it’s your first time, pay special attention to whether they offer lessons private instructors or group classes so you can choose the course that suits you best and get the hang of it faster!

2. Ski resort amenities: Beyond skiing itself, features like lifts, sledding, and children’s play areas are key factors to consider. Resorts with a wide range of activities are perfect for family trips or first-timers. And if you’re craving an ultra-satisfying resort experience, go for ski resorts with on-site lodging and dining to level up your trip.

3. Ease of access: Ski resorts are usually in the mountains, so transportation is an important factor to consider. If you're driving or taking public transportation, opt for a resort close to Sapporo or New Chitose Airport, as it'll be even more convenient!

Hokkaido Ski Resort Hotels | The Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Niseko

Hokkaido Ski Resort Hotels | Niseko Ritz-Carlton Reserve
  • An ultra-luxury hotel from The Ritz-Carlton brand—there are only 8 in the world, and one is right in Niseko, Hokkaido! The architectural concept blends with the surrounding landscape, taking inspiration from kachō fūgetsu (the beauty of flowers, birds, wind, and the moon) to craft a space that’s both elegant and stylish. Built with natural materials like marble and cedar, the building itself feels like a work of art, and it offers sweeping views of Mount Yotei. Travelers who love beautifully designed, high-end hotels shouldn’t miss it!
  • Conveniently located near Niseko United Ski Resort, guests can "Ski In & Ski Out," and the slopes are right outside the hotel—so convenient.
  • The hotel features both indoor and open-air hot spring baths, and guests can enjoy the traditional local hot-spring soak right in their room. With large windows that let in plenty of natural light, it’s pure bliss to soak while taking in the snowy scenery!

The service was exceptional from start to finish — every staff member was warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our stay memorable. The Reserve Story Dinner was outstanding, which was a highlight of the trip. The view was simply unbeatable. Waking up to such breathtaking scenery each day made the experience even more special. The onsen facilities were excellent as well — clean, relaxing, and the perfect place to unwind while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Overall, this was one of the best hotel experiences we have had.

King Room With Mountain View
We stayed two nights at Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono for our anniversary and would rate it 4.9 out of 5. We originally booked a king room with mountain view, which had no private onsen, and when I asked about an upgrade the hotel said they were fully booked but promised a surprise. On arrival we asked again, and because a cancellation had come through, they let us pay the difference to move into a suite. The suite’s highlight was a large indoor onsen with a glass wall facing Mount Yotei, and since we had that private bath we did not use the public one. Our stay fell during a Japanese holiday, so there were short fireworks on both nights; we watched the first from our room and the second downstairs. We tried the teppanyaki and robatayaki restaurants, where the food was solid and up to hotel standard but not especially memorable. For activities, Mountain Lights by gondola was beautiful at night, while the three-section zipline was a must-do and truly memorable. On departure we asked about transport to the JR station and learned the hotel offers a free shuttle; the young driver was steady, responsible, and even carried our luggage up the stairs to the station entrance. The only minor letdowns were the dining and the uncertain upgrade process, but the room, onsen, views, service, and activities were excellent. One tip: book early, as this hotel is very hard to reserve, especially during holidays and ski season.

An absolutely wonderful stay! A big thank you to the hotel for the complimentary room upgrade for my birthday, and the delightful surprise of a birthday cake. Taeyang, a male staff member at the front desk, spoke excellent English and was very polite. The hotel facilities are top-notch, with a great selection of outdoor activities. Overall, my stay was 100% perfect, and I had a truly unforgettable birthday trip! 😚😋

This is a great option for a summer getaway. There are plenty of facilities for kids to play with, and while the zip line has age and weight restrictions, the other activities are also excellent. Summer isn't quite as stunning as winter, but it's still very good.

Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono is the pinnacle of the Park Hyatt brand. From the decor, design, onsen, skiing, to the dining… everything about it is incredibly satisfying. The room size is generous, the design is well-thought-out, and the selection of amenities, bed, pillows, internet, and bathroom… all are top-notch, truly outstanding in every aspect. The hotel's restaurants are also world-class; whether it's French cuisine, Japanese dishes, Chinese food, or even the lobby lounge, all maintain an exceptionally high standard. A flawless hotel.

This is my favorite Park Hyatt I've ever stayed at. The best part is that the room had two bathrooms, which was incredibly convenient when traveling with a child. The activity center next to the hotel offered a wide range of activities; we did rafting and tree trekking, and it was excellent value for money. My 8-year-old had an absolute blast.

Deluxe Two Bedroom Suite
Our final stop on this family trip to Hokkaido was a deluxe two-bedroom room at Sansui Niseko. We were extremely satisfied with the experience, making it the perfect ending to our trip. The room was very spacious, and the two-bedroom layout was ideal for a family. The living room, kitchen/dining area, and relaxation space were comfortably planned, allowing everyone to eat, chat, and relax together, while also providing ample private space. The interior design followed a modern minimalist style, using warm wood elements, soft lighting, and calming colors to create a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere, making us feel very at home. The most unforgettable part was the view of Mount Yotei from the room. In the morning, I would brew a cup of tea and sit by the window, watching Mount Yotei slowly emerge from the morning light and mist – the view was incredibly soothing and made the entire stay even more special. The hotel's service and hospitality were equally impressive, attentive, friendly, and just right. From the space and design to the view and overall comfort, it's perfect for families, friends, or travelers looking to slow down in Niseko. Thank you so much to Sansui Niseko for their thoughtful arrangements. I would definitely consider staying there again next time I visit Niseko.

We used this hotel for our last trip as a couple before the baby arrives, and also as a gift to celebrate my husband's work anniversary. We decided to go on this trip on short notice, just three days before departure, so we didn't do much research. However, everyone was incredibly helpful and gave us great recommendations for nearby places, making it such a wonderful trip that we even considered extending our stay! 😭 I've traveled a lot, but the staff's hospitality and service were by far the best I've ever experienced! I don't drive much, so I apologize for asking for so many transfers! 💦 Next time, I want to bring not only our baby but also my parents! It's become such a favorite place! The washing machine was available, and the large public bath was private and uncrowded – absolutely fantastic! I also loved the shampoo and other amenities; I hope they'll sell them someday! 💓 We'll definitely come back! Thank you so much!
