Sapporo Weather in December

Sapporo's weather in December is cold, snowy and completely different from Singapore's climate.

December is when Sapporo starts looking like a true winter wonderland, making it a popular choice for travellers who want to experience snow, winter scenery and seasonal activities.

For Singaporeans, the biggest adjustments is the temperature. Snow is also a major part of the experience.

If you're planning a December holiday in Sapporo, here's what to expect from the weather and what to pack.

Sapporo Snow in December

Noboribetsuonsencho

Snow is part of everyday life in Sapporo during winter, so be prepared for more than just a few snowflakes.

Snow can accumulate on pavements and roads, while melted snow can turn into slippery patches when temperatures drop again.

Proper footwear is therefore much more important than simply bringing a warm jacket.

If you're travelling in the late December, check the latest weather forecast heading out for day trips, especially if you plan to visit ski resorts or other areas outside central Sapporo.

Does it Snow in Sapporo in December?

Yes. Sapporo usually gets snow in December.

Sapporo's winter begins earlier than in many major Japanese cities. The city's official tourist information notes that the first snowfall can appear as early as November, while the amount of snow starts increasing from late December.

However, snowfall is not identical every year. Early December may have lighter or less consistent snow cover, while the second half of the month generally gives you a better chance of seeing a proper snowy landscape.

For Singaporeans visiting Sapporo for the first time, this is one of the biggest attractions. You can walk through snowy streets, enjoy winter illuminations and take day trips into Hokkaido's snowy countryside.

What to Wear in Sapporo in December

Sapporo Teine ski

Coming from Singapore, you may find Sapporo's winter surprisingly cold. A single thick jacket may not be enough especially when you're outdoors for several hours.

What to wear

Why you need it

Thermal innerwear

Keeps your body warm

Sweater or fleece

Adds insulation

Winter jacket

Protects against cold and wind

Heattech style layers

Useful for extra warmth

Warm socks

Keeps feet comfortable

Gloves

Protects hands from the cold

Beanie or earmuffs

Keeps your head and ears warm

Scarf

Helps protect your neck

Waterproof shoes

Useful for snow and slush

Snow boots

Better for deeper snow and icy surfaces

Don't Forget Proper Shoes

One of the most important Sapporo December travel tips is to wear shoes with good grip.

Snow and ice can make pavements slippery, particularly early in the morning and after sunset. Waterproof footwear is also useful because snow can melt into slush when temperatures rise slightly.

If you don't want to pack bulky winter boots from Singapore, you can also consider buying suitable winter footwear after arriving in Japan.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Sapporo?

Noboribetsuonsencho

Yes, December is a great time to visit Sapporo if you want to experience winter.

For Singaporeans who have never experienced proper winter, December offers the chance to see snow, walk through snowy streets and enjoy a completely different holiday atmosphere.

The trade off is the cold. You will need proper winter clothing, comfortable shoes and some flexibility in your itinerary because snow can affect travel conditions.

If your main goal is snow, consider travelling from mid to late December for a better chance of seeing established snow cover.

If you prefer milder weather and easier sightseeing, autumn or spring may be more comfortable.

Used the hotel as my base for day travels to Otaru, Furano / Biei. First overnight stay was without breakfast but that was lucky as I saw overflowing waiting crowds even at 6.45am!!. Subsequent stay was 4 nights - buffet spread was good and delicious - but 4 days of similar breakfast was abit repetitive - fresh omelette counter was manned by 1 person … not the efficiency I think of for Japan. Obvious is also the clearing of tables / turn over are slow due to a petit looking trolley with space for only max 2 trays (the reason for the long queue?) Room wise was comfortable, but with paper thin walls - i hear baby crying, people coughing or people on phone speakers not to mention the occasional loud thumps on wall ..had to use ear plugs in order to sleep. As it’s End June, the sky gets bright by around 3.30am … and the light leaking from The curtain does not help .. so it was also blind fold. Overall if not for the the nice and helpful Chinese speaking reception team .. I would have a mediocre experience at the hotel. Pic of the ‘leaking’ curtain which did not block out the lights for a good night sleep.

A renowned 5 ⭐️ hotel conveniently connected to the Sapporo JR station within 10 mins straight stroll. The Daimaru shopping mall 🛒🛍️ is situated right above for tax free retail shopping. The hotel looked 👀 grand & posh, & bit pricey, probably because it coincided with the Sapporo Snow & Ice Festival ⛄️❄️🧊 which is within short walk to Odori Park. With special access to the Club floor privileges, we enjoyed additional pampering F&B indulgence 🍷🧀🦐 . The hotel room is big & spacious but the overall facilities & decor are a bit nostalgic. The service is good👌 Sadly not much nightlife in this area, in comparison to Susukino area which comes to life @ night with more oishi eateries & great shopping 🛒 🛍️

10 mins walk to Sapporo station. Chose to stay there because I wanted to take the airport shuttle bus on my return date to Singapore, and their brand of hotel. It was very convenient. Staff were friendly and helpful, room was nice except the one I stayed in facing the train track so TOTALLY NO RESTFUL NIGHTS AT ALL. I asked the front desk they said they couldn’t change the room because of the price I paid for. It was not very cheap but it was less than S$200 per night. I am not sure how to check if the room is facing any noisy direction in the app.?!

I was assigned an older, unrenovated room. Although it was a bit dated, it was still very clean and comfortable. The bathroom wasn't a typical modular unit and was quite spacious. The hotel is very generous; all guests get complimentary access to the lounge, which offers drinks, alcoholic beverages, snacks, raw chocolate, and some dumplings. Because it's free, it tends to get quite busy. The biggest downside is the hotel's location. It's near the Tozai Line, but you need to transfer to get to the JR station, making it somewhat inconvenient for getting around. There aren't many shops nearby. There's a Yoshinoya across from Odori, but they don't serve breakfast, and the FamilyMart across the street has very limited options.

This hotel isn't in a bustling commercial area, but rather tucked away in a corner of a park. It's easily accessible – just a short walk from Exit 3 of the subway. There's a kids' playground, making it perfect for families with children looking to relax. Nearby, you'll also find supermarkets, convenience stores, and some excellent restaurants. The room we chose was compact but well-equipped. The window facing the park offered a lovely view, which I imagine would be even more beautiful when the flowers are in bloom. There's complimentary afternoon hospitality on the first floor, and we also received a beer voucher upon check-in, which was a thoughtful touch. I'd like to extend a special thanks to the Chinese-speaking staff at the hotel. They were incredibly helpful with our luggage and very friendly towards our child. Thank you!

The hotel was very nice. We got the corner rooms (208-209) and they had nothing to complain about. Spacious than most standard rooms in Japan. Our room has sofa and a table. Separate toilet, washing basin zone, and the shower room has a bathtub and a shower head separately. (I don't like thw combination one so i purposely chose this type of room) The cleanliness was superb, you can put the card on the bed and the sticker at the door to sign them to help clean the room and change the bed sheet. The room is equipped with a mini fridge, hair dryer, robes, air humidifier, kettler, few glasses and mugs, air freshener spray, slippers, laundry bag (for laundry service). Staff were nice, breakfast buffet was great (no need to book in advance, can pay upfront) The closest stations are the Tozai Line (orange): Nishi juitchome and the Namboku, Toho, Tozai Line: Odori station.

*Review: MyStay Sapporo Aspen* Stayed at MyStay Sapporo Aspen for a group trip with 10 adults, and it was a solid base for exploring Sapporo. *Location is perfect* It’s only a 5-minute walk to Sapporo Station, which made everything easy. We could walk to Susukino for dinner, catch the airport train without rushing, and it’s also a short walk to malls and shopping streets. For a group, being central like this saves a lot of time and taxi costs. *Room setup and space* We booked 5 rooms – mix of standard double rooms and standard twin rooms. Heads up: the standard double room is on the smaller side, fine for 1-2 people but tight with luggage. The twin room is noticeably larger than the double, so if you have the option, go for twin. Beds were comfortable and clean in both room types. *Amenities* One thing I liked was the amenity bar on the ground floor. You can pick up toothbrushes, hair ties, razors, sleep masks, and other toiletries for free. Good range, and it’s convenient if you forgot something or don’t want to pack bulky bottles. Rooms also had everything basic you’d expect – kettle, fridge, wifi worked fine. *Food and shopping nearby* There are tons of food options within a few minutes walk. Ramen, izakaya, convenience stores, and cafes everywhere. Plus you’re right next to the mall and shopping areas, so it’s easy to grab last-minute omiyage or do some shopping after dinner. *Overall* Great location, practical amenities, and convenient for groups. Just book twin rooms if space matters to you. For the price and location near Sapporo Station, it’s good value for a city stay.

This hotel is truly excellent. Its location is very convenient, just a short walk from the train station. One of the highlights is the complimentary welcome drinks available throughout the day, which adds a nice touch to the overall experience. The breakfast is also incredibly premium, with high-quality options across the board. Honestly, almost everything about this hotel is great. The only downside is that the room is quite small, making it a bit difficult to fully open a suitcase. If I have the chance to visit Sapporo again, this hotel will definitely be my first choice.

March 19, 2026 After checking out from another hotel at 10 AM, I headed straight here with my luggage. The front desk lady was very kind and helped me tag my bags, then stored them for free in the luggage room. Afterward, I walked to Suwa Shrine to take some photos. I returned around 2:30 PM. While waiting for my room to be cleaned, I picked up some free disposable toothbrushes, toothpaste, facial cleanser, lotion, and hair ties from the self-service corner next to the front desk. The free self-service corner had so many options! There was also a free drink machine for coffee and a free ice cream freezer. Finally, I was able to check in 15 minutes early, free of charge. The room was very clean and tidy. Across from the window was a tall building. Also, by registering as a hotel member via email, you can receive a small gift worth up to 1000 yen, such as a free one-hour late checkout or some complimentary drinks. I ended up choosing a free local-flavored orange juice. The main reason I chose this hotel was actually for its supposedly best breakfast in Sapporo. The restaurant is quite large, and in the morning, they offer salmon, tuna, squid, and crab sashimi – all very fresh. They even had four types of milk, all very fragrant and rich. Unfortunately, I had overeaten at an all-you-can-eat sukiyaki the night before, so I couldn't fully enjoy it. I'll definitely book this hotel again if I have the chance!

These days, when I book hotels in Japan, I prefer ones near JR stations. It's convenient for both transportation and shopping. This hotel is right next to Daimaru Department Store, and the station itself has a great selection of convenience stores and souvenir shops. I even spotted a Ueshima Coffee House at the station (which is almost a distant memory in Shanghai!). Across the street from the station is Tokyu Department Store, which I hear is a popular spot for locals. Just two blocks further, there's a Kani Shogun restaurant with 4 or 5 floors. The hotel strictly adheres to its 3 PM check-in policy; even if they put our luggage in the room earlier, we still had to wait until 3 PM to check-in ourselves. The breakfast here is excellent; the cold bridge noodles and seafood bibimbap were particularly delicious. The service, cleanliness, and overall environment are all great. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Sapporo.

This was our second stay at this hotel, and overall everything was very good. However, I would appreciate if the management could be a little more flexible regarding check-in timing and parking charges. We arrived at around 2:15pm, which was only about 45 minutes before the official check-in time of 3pm. We completely understood if the room was not yet ready and were perfectly happy to wait. We only asked whether we could park our car at the hotel car park first. Unfortunately, the front desk lady was quite unhelpful and insisted that if we parked before 3pm, we would need to pay the 24-hour parking rate of 1800 yen instead of the standard 1500 yen rate (3pm to 11am the next day). We even explained that we would be checking out before 9am the next morning. Since she was very firm on this, we decided to simply wait at the lobby instead. Interestingly, around 2:40pm, we noticed some Japanese guests arriving and checking in. Shortly after that, another very kind staff member approached us and informed us that our room was already ready and that we could proceed to check in and park our car. I genuinely try not to view situations through the lens of unfair treatment, but I do hope the management could sometimes exercise a little flexibility and discretion on a case-by-case basis, especially when guests are arriving only slightly earlier than the official check-in time.

I stayed in the most affordable room, but it was comfortable and not too small. Next to the bed was a desk with a light and mirror, and a chair with casters. Various chargers were also provided. The table was spacious enough with a refrigerator underneath, so I could eat, get ready, or watch TV just by sitting there. It was great for lazy people. The bath, of course, was large enough to stretch my legs out. I was able to choose my favorite bath salts and shampoo, so bath time was very satisfying. I was happy to see that the vending machine corner on the 5th floor sold bread, snacks, and even yakisoba bento boxes. I was able to extend my check-out time from 11:00 until 13:00. The extension fee was 1,500 yen per hour. The hotel was clean, the facilities were great, and the staff were very friendly, so I would definitely use it again.

The room was pretty spacious, with enough room for my luggage. Check-in was a bit strict, but they did offer a free welcome drink. The central AC didn’t let me change the temperature, and it got a bit hot at night, so I ended up opening the window to cool off. There were quite a few Japanese and Korean guests. There's a shuttle bus to and from the city center. I'm not sure if Chinese guests are treated differently. We had to queue at the counter for check-in, while the Japanese and Korean guests in front of us were all individually escorted to a sofa area for a personalized check-in experience. We, however, checked in at the counter. For the complimentary toiletries from the shop, since there was no attendant, I specifically showed them to the bartender at the drinks counter to confirm I had taken them. Yet, a staff member still followed me out to ask for my room number, even though subsequent guests just took items and left without anyone questioning them. In our room, there was a noticeable stain on the toilet seat. I called the front desk and they sent someone to clean it. Otherwise, the dining and hot spring experiences were good.

The hotel's location is convenient; airport bus No. 84 drops you right at the entrance. Buying a round-trip ticket saves you 100 yen. To get to the airport, you need to catch the bus from the nearby ANA Hotel. It's about a 10-minute walk to JR Station, and also 10 minutes to Tanukikoji and Nijo Market. I stayed at this hotel at the beginning and end of my trip. During the 4 days I was away exploring other places, I was able to store my luggage for free. The breakfast selection was decent, with ramen, freshly made omelets, and salmon roe rice being good. However, the variety was quite similar each day, which could get boring after several days. From 2 PM to 8 PM, you can get a free can of beer at the 14th-floor Sky Lounge. Unfortunately, the staff didn't mention this during check-in; I only found out later from an advertisement in the main building's elevator. The front desk staff I encountered were friendly, but their English wasn't good, so we had to communicate using a translation device. Overall, the staff's English proficiency was poor, the worst among the four hotels I stayed at on this trip. The onsen (hot spring) had a strong chlorine smell, making it feel more like soaking in a swimming pool. The washing machine and dryer were a bit old; even after an hour, the clothes weren't completely dry.

I am also very thankful to 陳家仁, who provided clear and helpful advice on how to take the bus. His guidance and willingness to assist gave me great confidence during my travels. Additionally, I want to give special appreciation to 神永, whose professionalism and dedication were outstanding. It was pretty good. The view from the 24th floor was excellent, and the public bath was larger than the Dormy Inn I stayed at before. The triple room was also very nice. Although the 0.9-meter-wide bed was a bit narrow for my 14-year-old, he didn't mind, and I prefer us all sleeping together, as it helps us bond more with him. Sapporo December Travel Tips for Singaporeans

Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine

Check the Weather Before Leaving

Weather can change quickly during winter. Check the forecast each morning, particularly if you have a day trip planned outside the city.

Allow Extra Travel Time

Snow and ice can slow down transport. Avoid packing your itinerary too tightly, especially if you are travelling between Sapporo and other parts of Hokkaido.

Wear Layers

Indoor places such as shopping malls, restaurants and stations can feel much warmer than outside. Layering makes it easier to adjust your clothing throughout the day.

Bring Lip Balm and Moisturiser

Cold winter air can leave your skin and lips feeling dry. These small items are easy to pack and can make your trip more comfortable.

Prepare for Shorter Days

December has relatively short daylight hours in Sapporo. Plan outdoor sightseeing earlier in the day and keep indoor attractions, shopping or dining for later.

💌Tips: Bring gloves and a warm scarf as exposed hands and neck can feel especially cold.

Conclusion

Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort

Sapporo weather in December is cold, snowy and perfect for travellers looking for a proper winter holiday. With temperatures around freezing, regular snowfall and beautiful snowy scenery, Sapporo offers a completely different experience from Singapore.

For the best chance of enjoying a snowy trip, considering from mid to late December. Pack warm layers, waterproof shoes and plenty of time winter sightseeing, then get ready to experience Sapporo at its most magical.
