There is no toilet in the room for the economy bed! You have to go outside. The overall hygiene is OK. It is not a central air conditioner. The air from the air conditioner is a bit damp and there is dust on the air outlet. The hotel's bathhouse is quite comfortable, and the transportation is convenient. Almost all buses from the bus terminal can arrive at one stop. If you don't pursue comfort, the cost performance is quite high

The hot spring hotel in Kurogawa was not booked, and Trip.com chose a holiday house in the nearby Tibetan hot spring. Arrive before 6 o'clock, otherwise the staff will get off work. The house is very old, the name is ”Mei”, and the other house is a very new one and should be much more comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped; The indoor hot spring is very hot, you have to try the temperature before entering the water. The towels are small and you have to bring your own bath towels.

I have been staying in very special places in Japan: beautiful locations with lots of care and details but this one is my favorite so far! Yoshi and Myong made me feel super welcomed, comfy and happy in their guesthouse. I arrived with a BIG LUGAGGE which was right away taken up by Yoshi (thank you so much!!!) and when I left he reminded me I could ask for his help if I needed (which I did). I like to ”judge” a place by the comfiness of their sofas, and Aso Base delivered superb excellency! So many cozy corners, there's not even one futon that is not hyper soft! The bathrooms have some themes on the wall, one is the cat theme, another one jellyfish and the other is lizards, so I had fun time choosing what theme I would go to. The shower capsules have shampoo conditioner and soap and then an area to dry your hair with a great view! There's details that are just piece of art! A small corner with a table, cd player and CDs that are awesome- Japanese, international and relax music and audiobooks! I've searched many of them in Spotify and will keep listening. While you are listening there are some images, like a collage, and it's so well thought. Every image has a doll representing it live action as well, like dreams coming true. The kitchen is reeeeaallly equipped, drinking water at the tap and has lots of seasonings and teapots 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 There's extra blankets and pillows and some of the pillows are animal shaped 😺🐶🐷🐑 so during my four nights there I slept in the company of Mr Snuggles, a grey cat that smiled with his eyes closed - there was pinky pig and hairy sheep too! in the female dorm every bed has a blue sky wallpaper like in Toy Story!!!! 🥹 I was a bit worried because the comments say there's lots of rules and that they are strict and don't open the door for people in the rain. But the thing is: there are some rules, because they are two people (+ another lady who helps with cleaning) taking care of a big house. It needs some organization and routines. They provide storage and the area has great options to enjoy while waiting - if necessary. Is a small town, many great restaurants around - the shop right next to the station that sells local products is a must trying repeatedly, the best onsen in the region is 3 minutes away, a Lawson across the street. I greatly enjoyed my time in Aso and everyday was glad to be going back to Aso Base. It is a place to come with a light and warm heart and soul ( they will certainly retribute), where you can have great conversations, play games or read a book, cozily nested and drinking tea while the fireplace and many lighting create a whole vibe. I've booked 4 nights and wish they were 8! Kamsahamnida and Domo Arigato, Myong and Yoshi!!!

This is a hotel I would like to stay again. It is a nice clean hotel that is very value for money. It is also near to the station and if you drives the parking is free of charge. The hotel even provide breakfast for every guest. Although it is near to the train station, can't really hear much or any noise at all which may be due to the good sound proofing thus I have a good night rest. This is the place i can highly recommend if you plan to visit Mt. Aso and its vicinity. My only feedback is the double bed is bit small than a queen bed for my 1 night triple room that i booked. Overall the room size is sufficient for 3 pax and 3 luggages.

I think it was the biggest disappointment so far. The hotel is fine if you stay for one night. But more — I doubt it. For example, it is mandatory to leave at 10:00 even if you stay for more than one night. You can pay 1500 yen, but it literally gives you nothing. You can’t use sauna and sento. You received no additional service or amenities. Even sleeping is hard — the staff changes sheets. Next, people actually live in this capsule hotel. It means they get up very early, loud, alarm clocks, etc. Finally, the locker room is super tiny. There is little space. No benches. Definitely will not stay again. Good sides — the staff is polite, and you can store your luggage at the counter. Actually, you must, but people still carry their luggage upstairs.

The hot spring facilities can be bathed in a large bathtub, multiple saunas, and a full personal wash shower I was able to do it. If you dare to say hope, I would be grateful if there was a bathtub in the medicinal bath. As for the meal, there was a dinner, so I couldn't eat and drink in the building, but I'll show you the menu. It was a delicious lineup as far as possible, so if you have the opportunity to use it next time, let me try it. I think so.

It is a little bit away from the city, but if you are driving, then it is not a problem. The room is big, onsen is super, you have to reserve before 10pm, afterwards, you can free to enter if it is not occupied, and you can enjoy the onsen privately with your family only. Regarding to the price we paid, no complains at all.

GGuest UserImpeccable Service From the moment we arrived, the hospitality at Takenokura Sansou was exceptional. The receptionist came out to the car park to welcome us personally and escorted us to the reception office. He and his colleague then helped unload our luggage and thoughtfully delivered everything to our room. The warmth extended well beyond the front desk. As we walked through the dining hall en route to our room, even the chef greeted us with a smile, which immediately made us feel genuinely welcomed. The staff took the time to explain all the room amenities in detail, including how to adjust the temperature of the private outdoor onsen. At the dining hall, the service team was consistently friendly and approachable, despite my limited Japanese. They served us with patience and sincerity—even when my son happily requested four servings of their heavenly dinner rolls. Upon checkout, the team came out again to bid us farewell. This was, without question, the best service we experienced throughout our 18-day journey across Kyushu. Facilities While some aspects of the room décor and appliances are dated, everything was immaculately clean. As someone particularly fussy about bedding, I can confidently say that Takenokura Sansou offers the best futon I have experienced since I began traveling to Japan in 1999. The quilt was fluffy and soft, while the futon was firm yet incredibly comfortable. I honestly wanted to stay longer just for the sleep. The private outdoor onsen was the highlight of our stay. The small garden was beautifully arranged, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere. The water temperature could be easily adjusted, and soaking while gazing up at the sky was pure enjoyment. The room layout was clearly well thought out, with the shower located just before the outdoor onsen and a door to keep out the cold—allowing you to warm up comfortably before stepping outside into the winter air. A small heater near the porch area by the toilet would be a welcome addition to make late-night visits more comfortable, but this is a very minor suggestion. Dining This was probably the best dinner we had during our time in Kyushu. Takenokura Sansou surprised us with a beautifully executed fusion-style, course-by-course kaiseki meal. Combined with cocktails and warm interactions with the charming and friendly oba-chan service staff, the entire dining experience embodied what I love most about Japan: excellent food, heartfelt service, and meticulous attention to detail. One moment stood out in particular. When my son asked—in English—whether he could have a fourth serving of the dinner roll, the chef unexpectedly emerged from the open kitchen and personally served him a freshly toasted roll with soft butter. We were genuinely delighted and deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture. Conclusion Everything about our stay at Takenokura Sansou was exceptional. My only regret is booking just one night. I will most certainly return if I visit the Mount Aso area again. Well done, Takenokura Sansou—you truly deserve this praise.

GGuest UserThere are private rooms and dormitories. The kitchen and bathroom are all very clean, so if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed by ryokans, I highly recommend this place. I had a wonderful, relaxing time, boss. The horse meat was truly amazing! ㅜㅠ! Next time, I'll bring a friend, and I'll treat you to some delicious Korean food. Definitely!! Stay healthy! It was so much fun.

GGuest UserI honestly do not know where to start, I booked the hotel without really knowing much about Kumamoto Prefecture. After arriving in Kumamoto City and then realising Ueki Onsen is another 40 minute bus ride I was thinking oh dear where am I staying. After arriving at the hotel I was greeted by the manager of the hotel who showed me to my room and gave me a tour of the facilities. Once settled in I realised there isn't great public transport around and I primarily wanted to see Beppu and Yufuin during my stay, I enquired with the manager on where I might be able to rent a car, with little to no Japanese language under my belt he took it upon himself to reserve a vehicle for me and offered to drive me himself to collect it. He then also said he would take me back to return it a few days later. After my trips to Beppu and Yufui village (Not to be missed) and not to miss the outstanding and beautiful surroundings in Uekimachi and the Aso region. The manager and I set off to return my hire car, on the way back he took me to Kikuchi shrine to pray and also gifted me coffee and cake. They also accommodated me with use of the on site onsen (amazing) after hours as I'm heavily tattooed. I feel truly grateful to have found this hidden gem of rural Japan and if you are thinking of traveling this great country I emplore you to go off the beaten path. I experienced untold kindness during my stay and have memories of a life time. Thank you so much guys

GGuest UserThe place was spotless and our room had two twin beds, a kitchenette, and the toilet space was modern and sparkling. What made this the best was its location on a little beach surrounded by mountains. Lots of parking for the cars (you have to drive there as it is remote) and the proprieters went above and beyond to give us a map of the area in English with notes telling us where cherry blossoms were blooming at that time and other things. Every day when we returned to the room there was a basket by the door with refreshed supplies. Our room had everything you needed to cook as well as a little table. You have to bring food from Amakusa City as there is no place to shop nearby but once you are there it is totally worth it. There is also plenty of picnic table style seating on the front patio of the rest house. We did not use them but they had stand-up paddleboards, snorkle gear, etc. The sound of the waves and lots of places to hike nearby were amazing.

GGuest UserThe hotel room was very spacious and clean. Our room faced the east and just next to the sea, so we could watch the sunset with sea view; it was very beautiful! There are men & women salt baths available for guests on the ground floor. There are ample car parking lots. Had breakfast just next to the sea! The spread was quite good with salad, rice, few local dishes, fish, soup, natto, etc. Dinner set meals with fish/sashimi were really fresh and delicious. We had a peaceful and happy stay. Staff were friendly, attentive and warm too. I was surprised to receive a souvenir when I check out!

GGuest UserThis is a great place to stay if you want to be in a peaceful and quiet location. It is in the village with not much disturbances. The owner is very helpful and try to answer your questions about bus and train services in the area. You can find some local restaurants nearby using your Google map. The restaurants are close around 3 to 4 pm most days. The closing hours for the restaurants are not accurate. This is a small town; if they don’t have costumers after a certain hours in the evening, they will be closed. Be mindful about that and come prepared with snacks and food!

We arrived on a rainy day with our bicycles and were so happy about the cozy tiny wooden house and a warm shower. We had an amazing view of the mountains and the shrine and it was even possible to make a campfire infront of the little house. It is a magical place. Also there are many cute and friendly cats. We would defenetly visit again!

GGuest UserWhat a great experience! Very glad we spend one night at this unique place. The staff was extremely helpfull and kind. The rooms are very decent, considering it's an old sleeper train. Just keep in mind the rooms are quite narrow so there is not a lot of space to keep luggage in the room. And the other facilities (bathroom, common rooom) are not abundant, but clean and very much so sufficient for spending a night.
