Types of Taxis in South Korea

In South Korea, taxis come in several categories based on the vehicle, service quality, and fare structure. The most common types include:

Types of Taxis in South Korea #1 Regular Taxi (일반 택시)

These are the most common taxis you’ll see in South Korea, typically available in orange, white, or grey. They are the most affordable option, making them ideal for short trips around the city.

Most regular taxis are standard sedans that can accommodate up to four passengers, though trunk space is usually limited to one or two pieces of luggage.

As many drivers may only speak Korean, it’s helpful to have your destination written in Korean beforehand to ensure a smoother journey.

Standard Taxi

Types of Taxis in Korea #2: Deluxe Taxis (모범 택시)

Deluxe taxis are black, more spacious, and offer premium service at higher fares. Drivers are professionally trained, and some may speak basic English or other languages.

Deluxe Taxi

Types of Taxis in South Korea #3: Large Taxis (대형 택시)

Large taxis are labelled “대형택시” or “JUMBO TAXI” and are ideal for groups or travellers with large luggage. They can seat 5–6 passengers but are less common, so advance booking is recommended.

Large taxi

Types of Taxis in Korea #4: International Taxis (인터내셔널 택시)

International taxis are designed for tourists, with drivers who can speak English or Chinese. They’re usually available at airports, hotels, and major attractions, and can be booked in advance.

International Taxi

Taxi Options in Korea #5: Uber/UT

While standard Uber rides are not available in South Korea, you can book rides in Seoul through Uber’s local partner platform, UT, using the regular Uber app. It supports Traditional Chinese, making it convenient for travellers.

Uber
💡 Pro Tip: Book flights as soon as you confirm your itinerary as prices rise quickly during the peak season.

A Traveler's Guide to Taking Taxis in Korea

Kakao T App

Korea Taxi Guide #1: How to Hail a Taxi

  • Street hailing: If the taxi’s roof light is on and shows ‘빈차’ (available), simply raise your hand to flag it down.
  • Book via apps: You can also request a ride through apps like Kakao T, UT, or T Map Taxi for a convenient and reliable option.

South Korea Taxi Guide #2: How to Communicate with Your Driver

  • Prepare your destination address in Korean or show the location on your phone map for easier communication
  • While some deluxe or international taxi drivers may speak basic English, most drivers mainly speak Korean.

South Korea Taxi Guide #3: How to Pay

  • Multiple payment methods are supported, including cash, credit cards, WOWPASS, and T-money cards (transit cards).
  • If you book through an app, you can also link your credit card for seamless in-app payment.

Top Taxi-Hailing Apps in South Korea

Kakao T, Uber, Taba.

Kakao T is South Korea’s most widely used ride-hailing app. It supports both Korean and English interfaces and comes loaded with features—you can choose different vehicle types, check real-time fares, and book rides in advance.

Korea Taxi-Hailing App Recommendation #1: Kakao T

Kakao T is South Korea’s most popular taxi app, offering Korean and English interfaces. Users can choose taxi types, check estimated fares, and book rides in advance.

However, registration usually requires phone verification, and overseas numbers may face limitations. Travellers may find it easier to use with an eSIM or a Korean SIM card.

How it works: Download the app in App Store or Google Play→ Create/log in to your Kakao account with Korean phone number → Verify your phone number by receiving the verification code→ Enter your pick-up and drop-off points → Choose your vehicle and payment method ( cash or credit card) → Tap "Call Taxi" and confirm your ride and track your driver in real time.

Korea Taxi-Hailing App Recommendation #2: Uber/UT

In South Korea, standard Uber rides are replaced by UT, Uber’s local taxi service. You can use your existing Uber app without downloading another platform.

Compared with Kakao T, it’s easier to get the hang of, making it a great pick for first-time visitors using a ride-hailing app in Korea. That said, coverage is mainly in Seoul and a few major cities, with limited service in suburban areas.

Highlights:

  • Available mainly in Seoul, Busan, Incheon (not nationwide)
  • Hails regular regulated taxis (not private Uber cars)
  • English-friendly interface (best for international travellers)
  • Accepts international credit cards & Apple/Google Pay
  • Sometimes harder to get a driver during peak hours
  • Can offer promotions/discount coupons for tourists

South Korea Taxi-Hailing App Recommendation #3: TABA

TABA is designed specifically for international travellers. It supports multiple languages, allows users to search destinations without typing Korean, and offers automatic message translation with drivers.

Getting around Seoul just got easier with TABA, an officially launched platform created in partnership between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and T‑Money.

Signing up is a breeze—just a mobile number, no Korean phone number or complicated verification required.

Payments are flexible too, with support for international credit cards like Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, and JCB, making it both convenient and reliable.

Highlights:

  • No need for Korean phone number (big advantage)
  • Supports multiple languages (English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai)
  • Supports international credit cards (cashless only)
  • Easier onboarding for first-time visitors
  • Smaller taxi network → longer waiting time in busy hours
  • Mainly focused on Seoul area only

My partner and I stayed at the Novotel Ambassador Seoul Dongdaemun for 5 nights and had a truly wonderful experience. From the moment we checked in, we were warmly welcomed by Dennis, who went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. He provided us with a lot of helpful information about the hotel and surrounding area, and his service throughout our stay was exceptional – truly 5-star! The location is fantastic – just a short walk to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park subway station, which made getting around the city incredibly easy. There are also plenty of convenience stores and cafes nearby, which was super handy. We also appreciated that the airport limousine bus to Incheon Airport stops just a few minutes from the hotel – very convenient for our return trip. The hotel itself is modern, clean, and well-maintained, with great amenities and comfortable rooms. It definitely lives up to its 5-star rating. We highly recommend this hotel to couples, families, or anyone looking for a quality stay in Seoul. We would definitely return in the future!

We did book the hotel as a birthday present for my sister. Hear her feedback: ” I would like to thank you all for making this stay an unforgettable one. We enjoyed our stay and the kindness of the staff who made sure to accommodate us from the beginning. Thank you for the birthday cake, the upgrade, and the flexibility regarding the swimming pool. We had a great stay and we hope to come back” She also said breakfast options are huge between continental buffet, Korean and Chinese food. The staff is very great and helpful. The only minus thing was that the swimming pool is usable only 3hours per day

What a great experience from the start! Had the hotel pick me up from the airport bus stop on arrival and they have regular shuttle bus available to the nearest subway station ( or you can choose to walk up/downhill). The hotel room itself was very clean and comfortable and I really appreciate the turn down service they offer. The surroundings of the hotel is very beautiful too. I made use of the gym and sauna for the 4 days I stayed there and could say the gym has one of the best equipments for a hotel standard. The hotel can be quite busy with non-hotel guests but it didn't bother me at all. I will definitely be back to try their buffet at the Parkview another time!

Dongdaemun Market Seoul|2.26km from downtown
Overall, a nice experience and offered good value for money. The hotel itself is aesthetically pleasing with a nice design throughout, and everything felt clean and well-maintained. The main drawback for me was the location. While technically in the city center, the hotel is situated uphill, which made the walk to and from the nearest subway station, Dongguk University Station, a bit tiring. It's not a severe issue, but if you plan on relying on the subway and walking a lot, be prepared for a minor climb. Additionally, there isn't much in the immediate vicinity of the hotel in terms of shops or restaurants, so you'll need to venture out for meals and entertainment. The hotel boasts two swimming pools, which is great, but it's important to note that a standard hotel guest only receive free access to the indoor swimming pool. Access to the other pool and the sauna facilities is an additional charge, which was a little disappointing. On a very positive note, the gym facility is excellent. I can't comment on the quality of the breakfast as it was not included with my room reservation. I inquired at the reception, and the price was quite high—around KRW 64,000 (USD 45) per guest—which I felt was rather expensive for a single meal. The most significant issue affecting my comfort was the poor soundproofing. I could clearly hear guests talking next door, and conversations from people walking in the hallway were also distinctly audible. This definitely detracted from the peace and quiet one hopes for in a hotel room, especially at night.

An excellent stay. From the moment I arrived I felt very well taken care of. Every member of staff was polite, friendly, and patient. I booked a twin room but was offered a King size on arrival. I had a river view that was so beautiful! Namsan park is just across the road - the location is perfect, perfect, perfect! Room service was prompt and the food was good. I didn’t have breakfast. I did eat at JJ Mahoney’s and that was excellent - super service!! The one thing that did seem odd was I couldn’t seem to not get water all over the floor when using the shower. Not sure if it was the pressure (which was great), or the angle of the shower head (which I did adjust to try and rectify things). Nice to see sustainability measures in place for amenities, towels etc. Oh - checking in on a Friday seems to be incredibly busy. I came home from an excursion at around 4pm on Friday and the lobby was jam packed (as was the gallery for tea etc.) so perhaps try and time your visit accordingly. Excellent stay, will definitely be back!

Very beautiful hotel. Greeted by staffs who helped open the car door, and get your bags and luggage to the check in counter every day! Only bummer was at check out timing is 11am, we tried asking for later check out timing during check-in and was told hotel is full. Managed to get a late check out of 12pm when we tried again the night before leaving the hotel. Hotel has a little mall,a coffee bean, CU, some expensive restaurants. It also has a sauna (30K won per pax), 1 hot and cold tub and one sauna room. Room amenities can be requested via the web app in your room. Rooms were very modern, however Water from the shower does flood the dry toilet area a little. Generally a great stay.

We stayed at Hotel Venue G in Seoul for 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The location is excellent, it’s close to many attractions, restaurants, and shops, and very convenient for getting around the city. There’s also the beautiful Cheonggyecheon Stream right in front of the hotel, perfect for a peaceful walk in the morning or evening. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, a great place to stay if you’re looking for good value and a convenient location in Seoul.

Staying at this hotel in Seoul is incredibly convenient. Getting here from Incheon Airport is a breeze – just take bus 6015 directly to the hotel, and for your return, you can catch the bus right outside. It's super handy! There are also several subway stations nearby. If you're coming from Line 2, exit 10 has an escalator, which is great if you're traveling with luggage. Check-in was fast and the staff were lovely, always smiling. The room itself was clean and comfortable. The housekeeping staff did an excellent job daily, even noticing I have long hair that needs blow-drying and kindly swapped out my old hairdryer for a newer, more efficient one. That was a really thoughtful touch!

I’ve stayed here several times in the past, and it didn’t disappoint again. The room is huge, the bathroom is nice and clean, and the staff are always kind and helpful. The room temperature was excellent and kept very warm during the cold winter in Seoul. The hotel is right outside a metro station, which makes getting around very convenient. This time I also discovered they have self-lock luggage lockers, free for the first 24 hours (or available for a small fee after), which was very useful. The laundry machines are also affordable and work well, with dryers available too. Overall, a very comfortable and reliable place to stay that I would happily return to again.

Right next to Lotte Department Store, and you can reach Myeongdong's main street via an underground passage. Cheonggyecheon Stream is within walking distance, and Gyeongbokgung Palace is just a bit further. It's super convenient for getting around. Upon check-in, we received an exclusive OLIVE YOUNG coupon. We didn't bother with breakfast since there are so many food options nearby. We booked connecting rooms; they weren't huge, but having two bathrooms was a plus, and there was enough space to spread out our belongings.

Dongdaemun Market Seoul|2.14km from downtown
Location: This hotel is reasonably close to Subway Line 5, but a bit further from Line 3. There are plenty of convenience stores nearby; if you turn right out of the hotel and cross an intersection, there's a large 7-Eleven with a microwave and hot water – very convenient for solo diners. On the way to Line 3, there's a large agricultural market selling mainly dried goods, with few snack stalls. There's also a Michelin-starred noodle shop nearby. Other shops are mostly commercial. Overall, it lacks a lively, local atmosphere. Lotte Department Store is very close, just two stops on Line 3. Across the road, there's a stop for Airport Bus 6001, named 'Baiton Hotel'. Service: The staff speak a little Chinese and are generally good. Environment: In the room, things like the air conditioning, lighting, and whether you need room service are all controlled via a panel. The air conditioning temperature adjustment isn't very comfortable for winter. Both the room and the hotel overall feel a bit dated.

The location is convenient and it is about 10 minutes walk to the core of Myeongdong. Parking is available with a charge (discounted at ₩15,000 for overnight parking). Self-served lockers for luggage storage are free for 24 hours for hotel guests. The room was smaller than I expected though.

Super great location! I liked that the hotel wasn’t in the same building as the shops. This meant more privacy and no elevator sharing with the public. The hotel staff were all great. They even allowed us to check in earlier which was such a pleasant surprise. I would definitely consider booking here again on my next Korea visit

Super Surprising for first staying but long period with Henn na , all facility was perfect and having gimmicks such robots welcoming and amenities delivery service on request anytime via Ginnie chatbot in room.  Anyway, all staff was also very nice and helpful. As Japanese style hotel, you might feel room is a bit small when checked in however I could feel more comfortable and like the room because all was complimented itself. From the moment I stepped into the lobby, I knew this stay would be different. While many luxury hotels offer grand decor, this one combines that elegance with a warmth that truly makes it feel like a home away from home. Check-In & First Impressions: The arrival process was seamless. The staff was exceptionally welcoming, and I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary room upgrade to a studio suite. They even let me choose the essential oils for my room's diffuser during check-in—a small but incredibly thoughtful touch. The Room: The suite was spacious, modern, and spotlessly clean. The highlight was the ”Heavenly Bed”—I haven’t had such a deep, restful sleep in months. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a majestic view of the city skyline, which was particularly stunning at sunset. Dining & Amenities: Breakfast was a highlight. The spread was vast, featuring everything from freshly made dim sum to a live cooking station. I also spent an afternoon at the rooftop infinity pool, which felt like an oasis high above the busy streets. Service Excellence: What truly sets this hotel apart is the service. The team was attentive and responsive, anticipating needs before I even asked. When I had a minor issue with the AC, the maintenance team fixed it within minutes with a smile. Final Verdict: Whether you are traveling for business or a relaxing family holiday, I cannot recommend this hotel enough. The prime location and impeccable service make it a top-tier choice. I will definitely be returning!

I have to say as a first time sole female traveler— I always travel solo and I must say! this place is a gem! Lemme tell you first, the entrance to the hotel is at the side (I am bad with directions)… if you come late and the mall is close, face left and entrance is just at the side lol. In front of the hotel, there are lots of restaurants and you can always eat as solo traveler. Lots of choices and good foods. Lots of street market vendors if you just walk 1-2minutes and love this. I initially dont like the room (because of the view) (I only book places for their views tbh) as I have initially asked for a good view room on my request and all ;; and as what was advertised but it is my mistake for not booking city view room but I saw on some reviews they got nice city view room; and had to ask for a change because I stayed for 6nights. They advised as it was late, they have got no rooms available and informed me they will change on the next day. They promptly changed it on the morning itself saving me the time in to initially checking out and wait for availability. They were really quick in addressing the concerns I have and was very helpful. Really appreciate it as a first timer visitor in the city. Will definitely come back to this hotel and will book city view room next because so worth it!!!! Thank you for being so kind and helpful ❤️❤️ DDP is just 5mins walk and was so mesmerised! I have got the trail view and the trail is just so pretty! Will include the pictures of the trail! Once you got on the trail, you can see Namsan Tower as well! Very very wonderful stay!

JW is 5 star because of excellent assistance and service from the Conceirge to bellboy! Oliver recommended and assisted us to book a nice dinner venue for my family at Seokparang. He even initiated to assist me in booking a cab. Mason helped us with the luggage. He even took initiative to ask us for our airport transfer car plate number so he can keep a lookout for us. He even initiated to ask us to sit inside the hotel lobby while he kept a lookout for us. As he understood we are rushing to catch the flight, he even helped us to translate to the cab uncle to hurry for us. All of them speak fluent English, are very warm hearted and takes initiative in offering excellent service with genuine smiles. Our hearts are deeply grateful to them. 5 star 🌟 because of them. 4 star for the rooms don’t have Netflix. It would be great if the family can gather over Netflix entertainment. Small issue though as the service more than cover up for everything! :) We were offered a nice river view which was romantic! Very clean hotel. Location is excellent as train station and direct bus airport limousine is just by the hotel. Great connectivity. Will definitely revisit this hotel again.

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel and would absolutely recommend it—especially if you’re traveling with kids. The service was great and incredibly attentive throughout our stay, making us feel truly taken care of. The hotel is super kids-friendly, with an amazing kids’ room on the 5th floor that our little ones loved. The location couldn’t be better for families: Lotte Adventure World is literally around the corner, which is perfect if you’re traveling with kids aged 3 and up. The subway is also close by, making it easy to get around. We loved the convenience of having two malls connected to the hotel, filled with excellent restaurants and coffee shops. The breakfast was also a highlight—plenty of variety and something for everyone, whether you’re craving Asian or Western options. The gym and spa pool were super fresh and well-maintained, a great bonus for some downtime. And did I mention the service? Truly outstanding. We’ll definitely be coming back.

FAQs about Korea Taxi

  • What taxi app is used in Korea?

The most widely used taxi app in South Korea is Kakao T (formerly Kakao Taxi), operated by Kakao Mobility. It connects riders with licensed, metered taxis across Seoul, Busan, Jeju, and all major Korean cities. The app is available in English and supports international credit and debit cards, making it the go-to Korea taxi app for foreign travellers. Simply download Kakao T from the App Store or Google Play before your trip.
  • Does Korea use Uber or Grab?

South Korea does not meaningfully use Uber or Grab. Grab has no operations in Korea, and Uber operates only in a very limited capacity, primarily by partnering with licensed taxis through the Kakao T ecosystem. For all practical purposes, Kakao T is the dominant ride-hailing platform in South Korea and is the recommended app for Singaporean travellers visiting Korea.
  • Can foreigners use a Kakao taxi?

Yes, foreigners can absolutely use Kakao Taxi. The Kakao T app has an English-language interface, allows destination input using hotel names, English landmarks, or map pins, and accepts international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard). You generally do not need a Korean phone number to register. It is one of the easiest and most reliable ways for foreign tourists to get around South Korea.
  • Can foreigners call taxis in Korea?

Yes, foreigners can hail taxis in Korea in several ways: flagging one down on the street, finding a designated taxi stand near tourist areas, hotels, or transport hubs, or booking via the Kakao T app. For English-speaking travellers, using the Kakao T app is the easiest option as it eliminates the language barrier entirely. International Taxis (인터내셔널) in Seoul are also specifically designed for foreigners, with English-speaking drivers and the option to call or book in advance.
  • How much does a Korea taxi cost?

Korea taxi fares are metered and vary by taxi type and distance. A General Taxi in Seoul starts at approximately 4,800 KRW (about SGD 4.80) for the first 1.6 km, with additional charges per 100–131m thereafter. A short city ride typically costs 6,000–15,000 KRW (SGD 6–15), while a trip from Incheon Airport to central Seoul can range from 60,000–100,000 KRW (SGD 60–100) depending on traffic and taxi type. Late-night rides (after midnight) usually carry a 20–40% surcharge.
  • Is it safe to take a taxi alone in South Korea?

Taking a taxi in South Korea is generally very safe, even for solo travellers. All official taxis are licensed and metered by the government, and drivers are required to display their identification. Using the Kakao T app adds an extra layer of safety as the ride is tracked in real time, your driver's details are recorded, and you can share your ride status with others. To stay safe, always take licensed taxis (avoid unmarked vans or touts), use the Kakao T app to book, note the taxi's licence plate number, and contact the Korea Consumer Agency (1372) or the taxi complaint line (120) if you experience any issues.
