Traditional city centre hotel, great location, excellent value (low season?). The young lady on reception duty, spotted my request for a quiet room , well done - stayed at a 4 star in Liverpool the night before and they didn't!
Young chap also on reception gave me a bit of the history of the place - thank you . Room was fine, old building so high ceiling, nothing flash but it had some character. The lounge is beautiful with original features.
Hotel is clean and tidy. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. Hotel is close to amenities. Great restaurants and pubs/clubs. Carlisle is a great place for a night or weekend away.
An classic, elegant ”old style” hotel in a picturesque, quiet location near the lake. Its convenient that trailheads for some of the popular hikes ( Lake Circuit, Catbells, Wally Crag ) are at the hotel. Its a 20 minute bus ride from Keswick town, which is 40 minutes from Penrith station. Staff very helpful. The included breakfasts are excellent with a range of tasty hot and cold dishes. We spent an enjoyable four nights.
The hotel is next to a large living area industrial area. Remember that there is a Tesco supermarket next to it, which is within walking distance. The hotel room is quite large, the service staff is very polite, the security measures are good at night, there will be an access card. In general, friends who travel by car can choose. It takes about 50 minutes to reach Lake Windermere, with a choice of car.
In arrival I was told that booking in was only at 3pm and on my email letter of confirmation it clearly stated 2pm. It looked as if the lady DS not believe me and so I fortunately had the confirmation email on my phone to show her. She then told me she would make and exception and allow me to book in an hour earlier! I find it frustrating that I should even hear the word “exception” as I was not in the wrong in the first place.
The only other suggestion I have is that there should be a non-slip mat available to use in the shower as well as a handle to hold onto when showering and wanting to wash one’s feet. I am sure you have mane elderly visitors and it would prevent them from slipping in the shower in the slippery floor and falling.
Apart from these two things I slept well and found the view over the pond with the birds a lovely one. All nice and clean and can recommend the hotel as a safe one to stay over.
We checked in late night, witn a car. The receptionist was very welcoming and helpful.
Room is as described. Heating was cranked up which we appreciated, but also had windows we could open. Great doorway location to the rest of the lake district.
Very happy with our 1 night stay.
Check in wouldn’t let us check in 15 mins early so we went to pool and jacuzzi, around the pool was green with all the water lockers were rusty ceilings not good either I wouldn’t rush back there. But our room was spot on couldn’t fault it at all

A hotel that's definitely seen better days! Staff were pleasant and the room had everything we needed, even a lovely massive cobweb on the inside of the window!😉 Plenty of hot water and lovely clean towels. Breakfast was plentiful and for a day or two was okay. For the prices you pay it offers good value, I'd stay again 👍

GGuest UserI have grave misgivings about hotels in the busiest parts of the Lake District, especially at holiday times. Obviously they will be relentlessly overcrowded, with harassed and unfriendly staff. I’ve wanted to go back to the Proper Lake District for a while though so took a risk on the King’s Head. It’s easy to find on the ear popping main road up from Grasmere, just beyond the impressive hulk of Steel Fell, close to Thirlemere. Parking anywhere in the Lakes is hideous and expensive. Not here. Relaxed and plenty of room. It’s a long building with a pleasant bar restaurant area and beer garden. I found a rather pleasant residents lounge where a lady called Jo checked me in and made me feel welcome. It does get busy with passing trade but the staff look after their residents. They flogged me decent real ale and Jura whisky (the proper stuff). Breakfast is briskly table served from a menu and is well presented. I didn’t eat otherwise there but the food is popular and well priced. The road outside is busy and a bit of a racetrack, and the occasional fighter jet roars between the mountains on low altitude practice, but the relentless bleating of the sheep opposite soon returns things to normal. I was a little sorry to depart, but the manager said he hoped I would come again. I believe I will, and will even bring my wife.
薛薛The hotel is relatively remote, but the environment is surprising, the rooms are clean, the backyard lawn is very comfortable, and the children are having fun. There is no place to eat nearby, only dinner at the hotel. It is estimated that usually only local people will go there. The service capacity is limited. Dinner can only be seated at a designated time, but the dishes are more delicate.
MmarissahuoWalking to the train station and the town center, the room is very clean, breakfast will be delivered to the room at the agreed time, there are several ways to choose eggs, I choose fried eggs, and hot oatmeal, very suitable for Chinese stomach. There are direct buses to windermere and Keswich.
GGuest UserI arrived on a stormy night in the lake district - on entering the hotel I was met with a warm glow from the log fire and a very warm welcome from the receptionist.
As the hotel dining room was about to close, a room was sorted and the kitchen kept open for an evening meal - a delicious melt in the mouth steak was a pleasure after a 6 hour
drive from the south of england, washed down with a welcome glass of Shiraz.
The bed was very comfortable, the room had a large bath and separate shower cubicle and copious hot water.
The decor and fittings were in sympathy with the age and history of the hotel, a pleasant change from the blandness of more modern mass market hotels.
The staff were very friendly and it was a pleasure to be assisted without having to use automated impersonal systems.
I will not hesitate to stay at the hotel again when I am next in the area.
PPriyanka BajirajThe property and the ambience is lovely. The view from the restaurant garden is very pleasant and beautiful. The room size, bathroom size and amenities were good. We faced 1 major problem to be precise which made us a bit sore.
Cleanliness - the room was clean except for the carpet. It didn’t feel like it was vacuumed. There was probably a pet staying in that room before us and there was a lot of hair on the carpet. I understand it is a pet friendly property and I have absolutely no problem with that. But cleaning the room properly before the next checkin is a basic expectation. We couldn’t step on the floor without our feet being covered with hair.
Apart from that, everything else was very good. Breakfast was also good and the customer service was very polite and hospitable as well.
JJamesOutstanding, I had a superb stay ,the George is unique
Whilst, having a timeless aspect ,magnificent historic building it has modern features, and aspects, that make it very comfortable.

Christmas break.

GGuest UserVery old looking run down needs totally decorating from top to bottom …..
killed 5 flees in my bed not a clean place .
On the plus side the food . evening meal was good breakfast was fab …. Entertainment was good. Bar was busy people dancing throughout the night every one enjoying their self’s
GGuest UserThe hotel I was originally booked in had a flood so at the last minute I had to find another one, I found Arkale lodge and it didn’t disappoint, the rooms are pretty basic, but extremely clean which in my book is more important than a fancy room. And certainly good enough for the price I paid, the gentleman that showed me around was friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was from 7 which was perfect for my continuation of my Hadrians wall walk.
The Breakfast was included in the room price and was exceptional (full English, which I easily adapted as a non meat eater)
It was plentiful, delicious and freshly made. And a great start to my long tiring day
Thank You so Much
For your kind hospitality
Cathie :)
