China Customs Prohibited Items

China remains a popular destination for Singapore travelers thanks to its rich culture, famous attractions, shopping streets, and diverse food scene. However, some visitors face delays at customs because they unknowingly pack items that are restricted or banned.

Items that may seem normal in Singapore could be prohibited in China due to customs, health, or security regulations. Understanding the rules before you pack can help you avoid confiscation, fines, or unnecessary stress at the airport.

Prohibited Items You Cannot Bring Into China

Prohibited Items in China

China has strict customs regulations to protect public safety, agriculture, and national security. If prohibited items are found in your luggage, customs officers may confiscate them or conduct further inspections.

Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances

China has very strict drug laws, and even small quantities of prohibited substances can lead to serious legal consequences.

  • Marijuana in any form
  • Cannabis oils or edibles
  • Illegal narcotics
  • Products containing banned drug ingredients

Weapons and Self Defense Items

Many self-defense products that may be sold elsewhere are not allowed when entering China.

  • Pepper spray
  • Tasers
  • Firearms or firearm parts
  • Large knives or restricted blades
  • Explosive materials

Fresh Food and Agricultural Products

China closely regulates food imports to prevent agricultural risks and disease outbreaks.

  • Fresh meat or raw meat products
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Seeds and plant materials
  • Unprocessed seafood
  • Homemade food without proper labeling

Packaged snacks are generally safer, but always check ingredient labels.

Counterfeit and Fake Goods

China may confiscate counterfeit branded goods, especially when carried in large quantities for commercial purposes.

This includes:

  • Fake designer bags
  • Counterfeit watches
  • Replica shoes
  • Fake branded clothing

  • Prescription medicine with strong ingredients
  • Painkillers containing codeine
  • Sleeping medication
  • Cold medicine with restricted ingredients

Tips:

  • Keep medicines in original packaging

Power banks are typically allowed but must follow airline safety regulations.

  • Must be packed in carry-on luggage
  • Not allowed in checked baggage
  • Battery capacity must meet airline rules

Drones

Drones are increasingly popular for travel photography, but China has strict rules regarding drone usage.

  • Registration may be required for certain models

  • No flying near airports, military zones, or government buildings

Large Amounts of Cash

Travelers carrying large sums of money may need to declare it upon arrival.

This may include:

This is a standard five-star hotel. Although the facilities are a bit old, they are well-maintained. The only downside is that after so many years, the carpet still has a slight odor when you enter the room. We stayed in a family room with three people, and overall it was decent. The location is excellent, but the room rate is still a bit expensive!

The Mira Hong Kong is super convenient for getting around. It's really close to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, right across from Kowloon Park for a nice stroll, and there are tons of shops nearby for anything you need. There's even a Japanese supermarket downstairs and Lin Heung Tea House diagonally opposite!

I chose this hotel for its proximity to the vaccination center, and it turned out to be unexpectedly good. It's clean and fresh, and the service is excellent. The views from the 40th floor are clear and expansive. The executive lounge on the 36th floor offers breakfast from 7-10 AM, afternoon tea from 3-5 PM, and a rich selection of evening snacks from 6-8 PM, all complimentary. It's also very convenient for metro travel and taxis. Excellent value for money!

This hotel is located in the East Tsim Sha Tsui area, right next to Victoria Harbour! It's incredibly convenient for getting around, and the hotel itself is a luxurious five-star property. **Facilities:** Truly five-star facilities. **Cleanliness:** Spotlessly clean and tidy, absolutely excellent. **Environment:** The location is superb, with the MTR station, Airport Bus A21, Victoria Harbour, and K11 all within walking distance. **Service:** Hong Kong's service is consistently top-notch. Many thanks! 🙏

This was my third stay at this hotel, but unfortunately the experience was quite different from my previous visits. During my three night stay, I had to change rooms four times. The first room did not match the room size I had booked, so I was moved to an accessible room, but there was a noticeable smell coming from the bathroom drain. I was then moved again, only to find that the AC was not working properly. Although these issues were frustrating, I appreciate that the staff took them seriously and arranged room changes promptly each time. Overall, the service was good, but the stay was disappointing compared with my previous experiences.

Great location just behind the Peninsula Hotel and only 5 minutes walk to victoria harbour hk and to the most famous/luxurious road in HK and near to Kowloon Mosque. Marvellous and very delicious buffet style breakfast. Vegetarian and halal food options available here, they made us special fried rice to suit our needs as the one on the buffet wasn't halal. Definitely recommend and I would definitely come back to this lovely luxurious hotel.

The hotel's location is excellent, right outside are the subway, bus, and taxis, making transportation very convenient. The only downside was the large number of Central Asian guests who were quite noisy. A few Central Asian children were constantly playing loudly in the hallway, and used food containers were piled up along the corridor after people ordered fast food.

We really enjoyed our stay at Eaton HK. The location was one of the best parts — super convenient with easy access to transport, shopping, restaurants, and nearby attractions, making it very easy to explore Hong Kong. The room had a really cool modern vibe and felt stylish, comfortable, and well-designed. Everything was clean and thoughtfully set up, which made the stay feel even more enjoyable. One thing we especially appreciated was that they were one of the few hotels that provided baby cribs, which made travelling much easier and more comfortable for families. The staff were accommodating and helpful throughout our stay, and overall the hotel had a really welcoming atmosphere. We’d definitely stay here again on a future trip to Hong Kong.

I honestly think this hotel offers incredible value for its price. ~Service: The front desk staff were warm, patient, and clearly thought about the guests' needs; there was even someone on duty late at night. The luggage storage attendant was also incredibly kind. I just asked about the hotel shuttle, and he took me out in the pouring rain to catch it. ~Amenities: Some floors have free water dispensers, and on the first floor, there's a complimentary tea room, as well as coin-operated washing machines and dryers. They offer a free hotel shuttle from 10 AM to 6 PM, and umbrellas are available in the lobby – all very convenient. ~Location: The hotel is located at an intersection, just a few steps away from McDonald's, ParknShop supermarket, and 7-Eleven. Across the street, there are various restaurants serving Korean, *********, Chaoshan, Vietnamese, and Singaporean cuisine, all at reasonable prices, usually under 100 HKD. ~Transportation: The hotel shuttle stops at Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Elements Mall at Kowloon Station. The bus has automatic doors, and you just wave to get on at designated spots. The Olympic and Nam Cheong MTR stations are about a ten-minute walk away. There are also bus and mini-bus stops near the hotel, which are very convenient if you know how to use them. For a concert I attended, I took a special bus from Kai Tak to Prince Edward after the show, then transferred to a mini-bus, arriving at the hotel in just 20 minutes.

The hotel is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the Jordan MTR Station (Exit B1), making it easy to get around Hong Kong. The Airport Bus A21 stop from the airport is less than a minute’s walk from the hotel, which is very convenient for arrivals. For the return trip to the airport, the bus stop is across the road and takes about 3 minutes to reach, including waiting at the traffic lights. The staff may appear expressionless, but they are helpful and willing to assist when needed. The hotel provides thoughtful amenities such as two complimentary cans of mineral water daily, bedroom slippers, and bathrobes, adding to the comfort of the stay. Overall, the hotel offers excellent accessibility and practical amenities, making it a good choice for travellers looking for convenience and slightly quieter area from the busy Mongkok area.

My five-year-old daughter was so sad about leaving Hong Kong and this hotel tomorrow that she cried in bed. She really loved this place! What made me feel very safe and secure, especially traveling alone with a child, was that you needed a room card to access any floor in the elevator. The room was cleaned daily, and we received two complimentary bottles of water every day, plus a free mini-bar. Our room also had a bathtub, and there's a pool at the hotel. It's a shame it rained during our entire trip to Hong Kong, so we couldn't swim. The hotel's location is excellent; I felt it was convenient for getting everywhere with a child. Every evening, I'd walk with her to Temple Street nearby for some herbal tea. All in all, I feel very fortunate to have found this hotel for our trip. Oh, and the medical staff in the lobby were all very friendly and professional, which really speaks to the class of this established four-star hotel! Thank you, Prudential Hotel, we'll definitely be back! 😁😁😁😁
