Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang in northwest China, is a city that most people think of as the gateway to the wild landscapes of the Silk Road. When is the best time to visit Urumqi? Check this guide to find the answer.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Urumqi?
The best time to visit Urumqi is June through October. During these months, the days are warm, the skies are clear and bright, the mountains and grasslands look their best.
In August and September, things really come alive. The hot midsummer weather cools down a bit and the poplar trees start turning golden. The snow-covered Tianshan Mountains stand out sharp and clear on the horizon. That’s when Urumqi looks most beautiful and feels most comfortable.
👍Pro Tip: When planning your visit, consider booking your flights to Urumqi early to snag the best deals and keep an eye out for promotions.
Before you begin making plans, here's a quick note about the Urumqi weather. Urumqi has a semi-arid climate. The air is very dry. There is a lot of sunshine. The temperature changes a lot from day to night. In July, the temperature goes up to about 29 - 34°C. In January, it drops to -12 - -15°C. There is no rain all year. So your umbrella can stay at home. You might need it for the occasional summer shower.
Spring (March - May): The Late-Blooming Season
Spring comes late to Urumqi. March and April are still cold and full of dust. In May, the city finally gets warmer with daytime temperatures around 20 - 25°C. Flowers appear in the parks and the mountains lose their snowline.
What to wear: Light layers plus a jacket for the evenings. The temperature can fall by 15°C after the sun goes down.
Best things to do:
Walk through the International Grand Bazaar without the summer crowds and bargain for handmade items.
Go to the Xinjiang Regional Museum (entry is free) to see the mummies and learn about the history of the Silk Road.
Spent a day going to Nanshan Ranch, where the first signs of green make the mountain fields stand out.
💡 Tip: May is arguably the best-value month. The weather is already pleasant but the summer crowds and peak prices haven't arrived yet.
Summer (June - August): Green Grasslands & Long Dazzling Days
Summer is a good reason for Urumqi. The grass near Nanshan and Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) is very green. The best part is that the sun stays up until almost 10pm.
What to wear: Loose, breathable fabrics, a sun hat and serious sunscreen. The UV at this altitude is fierce, so don't skimp on factor 50.
Best things to do:
Visit Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake). A shape like a crescent made of water surrounded by trees and snowy mountains. It is 1.5 hours from the city. There is a cost for the shuttle bus.
Get away from the heat of the city in the Nanshan Scenic Area.
Go to the Grand Bazaar food street at night to try lamb skewers and roasted buns.
💡 Tip: Do your activities in the morning or after 6pm. The sun in the middle of the day is very strong. Taking a nap is a habit of the people here and there is a good reason for it.

Ask a local when to visit and they'll almost always say autumn. The heat fades to a crisp 15–25°C, the air turns glass-clear, and the poplar forests around Nanshan blaze gold and orange. The views of the snow-capped Tianshan are at their sharpest.
What to wear: A light sweater or jacket; mornings and evenings turn distinctly cool.
Best things to do:
Drive to Nanshan Ranch for the famous golden poplar forests (best late September to mid-October).
Revisit Heavenly Lake, where the autumn colours against the snow are simply stunning.
Explore the ancient alleys and food lanes around Erdaoqiao (Xinjiang Min Street) before the crowds thin out.
💡 Tip: Book around, not during China's National Day Golden Week (1–7 October), when the entire country travels and hotel prices triple.
Winter is Urumqi at its most dramatic. Temperatures plunge to minus 10 to minus 20°C, the city is dusted in snow, and the crowds vanish. It's cold — genuinely cold — but also the cheapest and most atmospheric season if you come prepared.
What to wear: A proper winter coat, thermal base layers, a scarf, gloves and a beanie. Indoors, heating is strong, so layering is the way to go.
Best things to do:
Join the Tianchi Ice & Snow Festival (roughly November to March) and skate or toboggan on the frozen lake.
Hit the ski slopes at Silk Road Resort or Nanshan for some of China's best powder.
Warm up with big-plate chicken, lamb pilaf and endless hot tea in a cosy restaurant.
💡 Tip: If skiing is your goal, January and February are the prime months. For everyone else, this is the most budget-friendly window of the year.
👉Pro Tip: For a convenient stay, look for Urumqi hotels in advance to secure the best rates.

Practical Tips for Singaporeans for Visiting Urumqi
Time zone quirk notice: Urumqi follows Beijing time yet the sun behaves as if it is two hours earlier. Expect sunrises around seven in the morning and summer sunsets near ten at night. Plan photos around those times.
Day–night temperature swings are sharp. Carry a layer at all times even when it feels warm outside.
Dryness matter because the city sits about eight hundred metres above sea level and the air is very dry. Drink water constantly and keep a moisturiser close by.
Packing tips: Sun protection, lip balm, a refillable water bottle and one warm layer are the four essentials that fit every season.
💡 Pro Tip: If you’re travelling onwards to other cities in China, consider using China high-speed rail. It's fast, comfortable, and efficient!

The best time to go is June to October, when the weather is warm and the scenery is at its best. If you want the absolute peak, aim for August and September, the summer crowds ease off slightly, the poplar forests start turning gold, and the snow peaks are at their sharpest for photography.
Is Urumqi too cold in winter to enjoy?
It's genuinely cold, around −10 to −20°C, but the air is dry, so it feels sharper than you'd expect. Winter is absolutely worth it if you ski, want the Tianchi Ice & Snow Festival, or fancy big hotel discounts when the crowds vanish.
How hot does it get in summer in Urumqi?
Daytime highs reach 29–34°C in July and August, with brutal UV and sunsets that linger near 10pm. Plan to explore in the morning or after 6pm and you'll dodge the worst of it.
