How to Choose the Right Ski Insurance Coverage

Even though most travelers buy travel accident insurance or travel inconvenience coverage before heading overseas, every insurance company has its own rules, so skiing isn’t always covered under a standard travel accident policy.

Activities like skiing and scuba diving are often categorized as "high-risk activities," so when you’re choosing insurance, look for a plan that includes these outdoor sports, or add on "comprehensive insurance for specific activities".

Not all travel insurance plans offer the same winter sports benefits. Before purchasing a policy, compare the coverage limits, exclusions and additional costs.

Look for these key features:

  • Overseas medical expenses: Covers eligible medical treatment if you are injured while skiing or snowboarding.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: Helps cover eligible costs of transporting you to appropriate medical facilities or returning home in serious cases.
  • Ski equipment protection: Covers eligible loss, theft or damage to your own or rented ski equipment, depending on the policy.
  • Ski pass and lesson reimbursement: May reimburse unused prepaid ski passes, equipment rentals or lessons if an insured event prevents you from using them.
  • Trip cancellation and delays: Provides protection for specified unexpected events that disrupt your travel plans.

Most importantly, check whether winter sports coverage is included in the standard plan or requires an additional premium.

Ski Insurance|Travel Insurance Comparison

When comparing travel insurance plans, focus on the benefits that matter most for your ski holiday rather than choosing the cheapest premium alone.

Travel Insurance Coverage

Details

Medical Coverage

  • Overseas medical expenses (including outpatient, inpatient, and surgical expenses)
  • Emergency Medical Transportation
  • 24-hour emergency assistance service

Flight Baggage Protection

  • Flight delays and cancellations
  • Delayed or Lost Baggage
  • Lost Passport and Related Documents

High-Risk Activities Coverage

  • Medical expenses for ski accidents
  • Ski Gear Malfunctions and Damage
  • The ski resort is closed due to weather conditions

Personal Belongings Coverage

  • Lost or damaged electronics
  • Theft of personal belongings

For example, Singapore travellers can review winter sports options from insurers such as Singlife and Chubb. Both offer winter sports-related benefits, subject to the selected plan and policy terms. Compare their latest policy documents directly before purchasing, as benefits and exclusions may differ.

Ski Insurance|What to Know

Skiing is an exciting way to enjoy winter, but accidents can happen, especially if you are a beginner. Before heading to the slopes, understand the common risks, prepare the right equipment and make sure your travel insurance covers skiing or snowboarding.

Common Skiing Injuries to Be Aware Of

Falls and sudden changes in direction can lead to injuries while skiing. Commonly affected areas include the knees, wrists, ankles and head.

  • Knees: Twisting movements and sudden stops can cause sprains or ligament injuries.
  • Wrists and ankles: Falls may result in sprains, fractures or other injuries.
  • Head and neck: Collisions or falls can cause head injuries, including concussions, or neck injuries.

Wearing suitable protective equipment, learning proper techniques and skiing within your ability can help reduce the risk of injury. However, no equipment can eliminate all risks, so suitable travel insurance is also important.

Complete ski gear + ski insurance

Before your ski trip to Japan, South Korea or mainland China, prepare the right equipment and check your insurance coverage. Beginners should consider taking lessons with a qualified instructor and start on slopes suited to their skill level.

Essential ski gearWhy you need it

Helmet

Helps protect your head from impact

Ski goggles

Protects your eyes from wind, snow and glare

Snow jacket and snow pants

Keeps you warm and helps protect against moisture

Gloves and neck gaiter

Helps protect exposed skin from the cold

Moisture-wicking base layers

Helps manage sweat and maintain comfort

Snow socks

Provides warmth and helps reduce friction inside ski boots

Ski boots and skis or snowboard

Provides suitable fit, support and equipment for your chosen activity

You can usually rent skis, snowboards, boots and other equipment at many resorts, so check what is available before packing.

💌Travel insurance tip: Choose a policy that explicitly covers your planned skiing or snowboarding activities. Check the medical expense limits, emergency evacuation benefits and exclusions, including any restrictions on off-piste skiing. Insurance does not replace proper safety precautions, but it can help protect you against eligible unexpected expenses.

This snow park with artificial snow is conveniently accessible from Osaka. I bought a Hankyu train package that included train fare, bus fare, park entrance fee, and lift pass. It was very good value. There's a snow play area for children, and ski lessons aren't as expensive as elsewhere. I think it's a great place for practicing or for first-time skiers because the slopes aren't too steep and are straight

There is a shuttle bus that can take you to Phoenix Snow Park from various places in Seoul and the metropolitan area, so it would be good for backpackers who want to go skiing without a car. You can rent ski suits and equipment in Phoenix, but the ski suits are a bit old. The equipment was generally okay.

Everything went great, but not without incident. The ticket said it included meeting at the station and transfer, but in reality, I had to pay separately. Because no one met me and there was no transfer. I searched around the station and found nothing. Otherwise, it was great. Full gear. Not steep slopes. Just what beginners need.🤝

We liked the place. But, choose your rate carefully: there are 3 levels of skiing on the mountain: 1. Beginner - this is absolutely nothing, 2. Intermediate slope - green runs in our opinion (two lifts lead to it), and 3. Higher slope (it feels like blue/a little red (depending on your preference) - two cream lifts go to it. I got confused when buying tickets on the trip and bought an adult standard for the intermediate level and a schoolchild with a discount for the intermediate level. Once on the mountain, I realized I needed an advanced one: so - I was only able to upgrade to an advanced level for an adult; you can't upgrade the discounted children's one. Overall, everything is convenient at this center (they provided skis, a jacket, pants, and a helmet). You need to bring your own gloves and balaclava (we had simple autumn ones). The ski boots are worn out - wide (it's better to bring thermal socks - maybe they will somehow solve the problem). In the building with the ski slopes there is a shopping center with cafes and a skating rink

I had such a great practice day at Huaibei International Ski Resort! The resort is surprisingly big, with wide slopes that give you enough space to really focus on improving your skills. What I loved most was that it wasn’t too crowded, so I could take my time practicing my turns — left, right, left, right — without feeling pressured or rushed by other skiers. It’s a great place if you’re transitioning from beginner to more confident on the slopes. The open space makes it easier to control your speed and work on technique. I felt myself getting smoother with every run.If you’re looking for a ski resort in Beijing where you can actually practice and improve (not just survive the slope 😅), Huaibei is definitely worth visiting.Snow, space, and steady progress — exactly what I needed. ⛷️✨
