The scenery is great, but there are too many tourists, skiers and tourists are using the same cable car up the mountain, so there is always a queue. The green line is not very suitable for beginners, too narrow, too many people, easy to collide

Preparing for Your Tokyo Ski Trip

Clothing

Tokyo Skiing Recommendations: Pre-Trip Preparation

What Should You Wear for Your First Skiing Trip?

If you're skiing for the first time, staying warm doesn't mean piling on thick, bulky clothes. The trick is to follow the three-layer dressing method: choose the right combination of fabrics to keep you warm, dry and comfortable while allowing you to move freely on the slopes.

How to Layer Your Clothes for Skiing

  • Base layer: Breathable and moisture-wicking Your base layer sits closest to your skin, so choose materials that wick away sweat and dry quickly. Thermal tops, quick-drying sports shirts and merino wool are all good options. Avoid cotton, as it holds moisture and can leave you feeling cold once you start sweating.
  • Mid-layer: Insulation to keep you warm The middle layer helps retain body heat. A fleece jacket or an insulated hoodie is a practical choice, as both provide warmth without restricting movement. Avoid overly bulky clothing that makes it difficult to bend, stretch or move comfortably while skiing.
  • Outer layer: Waterproof and wind-resistant Your ski jacket and trousers should protect you from wind, snow and moisture. Look for waterproof, breathable fabrics with a rating of around 8,000 mm or higher as a starting point, especially if you'll be spending several hours outdoors. A dedicated ski jacket is generally more suitable than an ordinary down jacket, which may not provide sufficient protection from wet snow unless it has an appropriate outer shell.

Don't Forget These Skiing Accessories

The right accessories can make a big difference to your comfort on the slopes. Prepare these essentials before your trip:

  • Neck warmer or face covering: Helps protect your face and neck from cold winds.
  • Ski socks: Choose moisture-wicking socks designed for ski boots. They should fit comfortably without bunching up, as overly thick socks can restrict circulation and increase discomfort.
  • Beanie or helmet liner: Keeps your head warm when you're not wearing a helmet. Always wear a properly fitted ski helmet on the slopes.
  • Waterproof gloves: Keeps your hands warm and dry when handling snow or falling.
  • Goggles: Protect your eyes from wind, snow and glare.

Which Ski Equipment Can You Rent?

You don't need to buy all your equipment before your first ski trip. Many resorts offer rentals for essential gear, including ski boots, skis, snowboards, helmets and gloves. Ski jackets and trousers may also be available, depending on the resort.

If you're concerned about hygiene or plan to ski regularly, you may prefer to bring your own base layers, socks and outerwear. For occasional skiing trips, renting bulky equipment and clothing can be a convenient way to save luggage space and reduce upfront costs.

Check the resort's rental list in advance so you know exactly what to pack.

SIM card/eSIM

Whether you're exploring Tokyo solo or heading out to the nearby ski resorts, having reliable internet access makes travelling much easier. An eSIM is a convenient alternative to a traditional physical SIM card. Simply purchase a suitable data plan online, scan the provided QR code, and follow the setup instructions to install it on your compatible device.

Once activated, you can get online in Tokyo without needing to visit a mobile shop or swap SIM cards, making it easier to navigate around the city, check train schedules and share your winter adventures.
