💓Important National Public Holidays in Malaysia 2027

Several major public holidays are observed across Malaysia, including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Labour Day, Hari Raya Aidiladha, Wesak Day, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Birthday, National Day, Malaysia Day and Christmas.

However, it is important not to assume that every holiday applies in exactly the same way in every state. For example, New Year's Day is not observed in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu, while Deepavali has state-level exceptions.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, 6 February and Sunday, 7 February 2027.

The weekend timing makes this an important date for Singaporeans planning a trip to Malaysia. A replacement holiday may apply when the Sunday holiday falls on a weekly rest day, depending on the relevant employment and state arrangements.

For travellers, expect particularly busy periods around Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca, with higher demand for hotels, restaurants and transport.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is currently expected on Wednesday, 10 March and Thursday, 11 March 2027.

As one of Malaysia's biggest festive periods, this is a popular time for Malaysians to travel home and spend time with family. Roads, airports and intercity transport can become much busier around the holiday period.

If you are travelling from Singapore, I would suggest booking your accommodation and transport early, especially if you are planning to travel beyond Johor Bahru.

Labour Day

Labour Day falls on Saturday, 1 May 2027.

Because Saturday arrangements can depend on an employee's designated weekly rest day, Singaporeans should not automatically assume that a Monday replacement applies to everyone. Check the applicable state and employment arrangement before planning your leave around this date.

Hari Raya Aidiladha

Hari Raya Aidiladha is expected on Monday, 17 May 2027.

Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu also observe a second Hari Raya Haji holiday on Tuesday, 18 May according to published state schedules.

This makes the period particularly useful for travellers heading to the east coast or northern states.

Wesak Day

Wesak Day falls on Thursday, 20 May 2027.

If you want to turn this into a longer break, taking Friday off can give you four consecutive days away from work when combined with the weekend.

National Day

Malaysia's National Day, or Hari Merdeka, falls on Tuesday, 31 August 2027.

The day marks Malaysia's independence and is celebrated with patriotic events, decorations and public activities across the country.

Malaysia Day

Malaysia Day falls on Thursday, 16 September 2027.

Taking Friday off can turn this into a four-day break, making it a useful date for a short trip to Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Malacca.

Deepavali

Deepavali falls on Thursday, 28 October 2027.

It is a public holiday in many Malaysian states and federal territories, but not every state observes it. Sarawak, for example, does not list Deepavali as a state public holiday, so always check your destination rather than relying on the nationwide calendar.

The most important thing is to distinguish between a public holiday falling on a Saturday and one falling on a weekly rest day. They are not always treated the same way. Under Malaysian employment rules, a public holiday falling on a designated rest day can trigger a substitute paid holiday, but the exact arrangement depends on the applicable rules and work schedule.

Popular Malaysian Destinations to Visit During Public Holidays in 2027

Malaysia's public holidays are also a chance to experience different parts of the country at their liveliest.

Kuala Lumpur: Celebrate Major Holidays in the Capital

Kuala Lumpur is one of the easiest choices for Singaporeans looking for a city break.

During Chinese New Year, areas around Chinatown and major shopping malls are often decorated for the festive season. During Hari Raya, Kampung Baru and other parts of the city take on a different atmosphere, with festive food and bazaars.

For National Day, you can look out for celebrations around central Kuala Lumpur, while Brickfields is a popular area to explore during Deepavali.

Year-round attractions include:

  • Petronas Twin Towers
  • KLCC Park
  • Bukit Bintang
  • Central Market
  • Chinatown
  • Batu Caves

If you are visiting in January, Thaipusam falls on 22 January 2027, making Batu Caves a particularly interesting place to experience one of Malaysia's major Hindu festivals.

Penang: Culture, Food & Festive Vibes

Penang is a good choice if your idea of a holiday involves plenty of food, heritage buildings and café hopping.

George Town becomes especially lively during festive periods, while Chinese New Year is a great time to explore the city's temples, clan houses and traditional food culture.

You can also visit:

  • George Town UNESCO heritage area
  • Clan Jetties
  • Kek Lok Si Temple
  • Penang Hill
  • Gurney Drive
  • Batu Ferringhi

Penang also has its own state holidays, including George Town World Heritage City Day and the Birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang.

Sabah & Sarawak: East Malaysia's Unique Holiday Experience

If you have several days available, Sabah is a good option for a longer public holiday trip.

You can combine Kota Kinabalu with:

  • Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park
  • Kinabalu Park
  • Kundasang
  • Sepilok
  • island and wildlife experiences

Sabah also has its own holidays, including Harvest Festival and the Birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah.

Sarawak is another destination better suited to a longer break.

Kuching makes a convenient base for exploring local food, heritage areas and nearby nature attractions. If you travel around Hari Gawai, which falls on 1 and 2 June 2027, you can experience one of Sarawak's major cultural celebrations.

Johor Bahru for an Easy Weekend Trip

For Singaporeans, Johor Bahru is one of easiest destinations to reach. You can cross via Woodlands or Tuas and spend the weekend shopping, eating or exploring the city. Popular options include:

  • Mid Valley Southkey
  • City Square
  • KSL City Mall
  • LEGOLAND Malaysia
  • Puteri Harbour
  • cafés and restaurants around Mount Austin

Johor also has several state-specific holidays, including the Sultan of Johor's Birthday and Hari Hol Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

Malacca for a Relaxed Heritage Getaway

Malacca works well for a two- or three-day trip.

Walk around Jonker Street, explore the historic centre, try local dishes such as chicken rice balls and Nyonya food, and spend an evening along the Malacca River.

It is especially suitable if you want something slower-paced than Kuala Lumpur.

Travel Tips for Singaporeans Visiting Malaysia During Public Holidays 2027

Malaysia Public Holiday 2027

1. Check the holiday for your destination

Malaysia does not have one identical holiday calendar for every state. Check the specific state before assuming that shops, attractions or offices will be closed.

2. Book popular hotels early

If you are travelling during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya or another major festive period, compare hotels early rather than waiting until the last minute.

3. Expect longer border queues

The Woodlands and Tuas crossings can become very busy when Singaporeans and Malaysians travel at the same time.

If possible, consider travelling outside the busiest periods and allow extra time for immigration.

4. Keep some cash with you

Cards and e-wallets are widely accepted in Malaysia, but cash can still be useful for smaller food stalls, markets and local businesses.

5. Check attraction opening hours

Some smaller businesses may close during major festive periods, while larger attractions and shopping malls may operate on special hours.

Always check before making a trip specifically for a particular attraction.

6. Expect higher demand

Hotels, buses, flights and popular restaurants can be busier around major public holidays.

If you are travelling with family or a group, booking ahead can make the trip much easier.

7. Plan around the festive atmosphere

Public holidays are not only about getting an extra day off. They can also be a great time to experience Malaysia's different cultures.

You may find festive decorations, special menus, bazaars, performances, and local celebrations that are not available at other times of the year.

❤️Pro Tip: To stay connected throughout your visit anywhere in the world, consider getting a Malaysia eSIM. Just activate and go!

What to Expect in Malaysia During Public Holidays

Malaysia Public Holiday 2027

Malaysia can feel very different during a major festive period. Shopping malls may have elaborate decorations, restaurants can become crowded and popular attractions may have longer queues. Some smaller businesses may also close so that owners and staff can celebrate with their families.

At the same time, these periods can be some of the most interesting times to visit. Chinese New Year brings red decorations, lion dances and festive food. Hari Raya brings bazaars and traditional Malay dishes. Deepavali brings colourful decorations and celebrations in areas with large Indian communities.

So while public holidays can mean more crowds, they can also give Singaporean travellers a chance to experience Malaysia at its most festive.

I really appreciated having a water dispenser, allowing me to drink water freely. Its proximity to the Twin Towers made it convenient for sightseeing and getting around. However, it was a bit disappointing that I couldn't see the Twin Towers from the room I stayed in this time. It would have been even better if I had a room with a view of the Twin Towers. The bathroom was spacious and comfortable, and the amenities were excellent. The food was delicious, but the variety wasn't extensive, with only about 3-4 main dishes. I stayed for several nights, and the chicken main dish was the same every day, so it would have been nice to see more variety with daily changes.

The dorsett residence is an apartment suite that is maintained and managed by the hotel. Check in was fine but one would have to walk a short distance to the residence. Non air conditioned lobby as well as the common areas within the residence apartment. The treadmills at the gym are not in working condition. The services on the other hand provided by the hotel, especially manager Christy and her team were immaculate in accommodating to our requests. There was a false alarm reported by us and she and her team attended to it promptly and personalised attention were accorded to our requests that included changing of rooms from residence to hotel. Kudos to Ms Christy and her team.

Our stay at The Face Suites Kuala Lumpur was truly one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the friendly staff. The suite was spacious, clean, and perfect for our family, with breathtaking views of the city that we enjoyed every day. My son especially loved the infinity pool, and it was such a joy creating special family memories together. After a full day of exploring Kuala Lumpur, coming back to a comfortable and peaceful room made all the difference. Thank you, The Face Suites, for making our stay so enjoyable. We left with wonderful memories and will definitely choose to stay here again when we return to Kuala Lumpur.

Since we stayed for 3days and 2 nights here, we only avail the 1st day stay of breakfast buffet at 46th floor. Hope the early check in (250MYR) also include free breakfast next time since we also pay for it. I also deposited 300MYR upon check in and received back upon check out. The pool is in 8th floor, we enjoy swimming in during lunch time as no other people use it. I think, since we stay for 3days it’s also good if they refill the mini bar, tissue and brush not wait for tissue refill. Overall, it’s good to stay here.

My top choice for business trips to Kuala Lumpur! I've stayed here three times now, and the hotel lobby staff even recognize me. The hotel staff are all very enthusiastic and provide excellent service, and the rooms are clean and comfortable.

Overall my stay at PARKROYAL Collection Kuala Lumpur was pleasant. One point worth noting: the printed notice informed guests that the Level 6 swimming pool would be closed until 22 September, and should reopen on 23 September. Unfortunately, the pool was still unavailable on 23rd. The alternative swimming pool at Pan Pacific Serviced Suites next door is accessible for guests, though less convenient. It would be helpful if the hotel could update guests promptly whenever renovation timelines get delayed.

The hotel is really old and definitely needs renovation. A lot of the facilities look dated and the overall condition could be much better. There was also a strong mould smell along the corridor, which was quite unpleasant. The hotel lift is also freaking slow and there was a long queue, especially during busy hours. This can be quite frustrating when you are in a hurry. The buffet breakfast was also a bit disappointing. There were not many choices available and the food was just so-so. There is definitely room for improvement in terms of the variety and quality of the breakfast. The best thing about this hotel is definitely the location. It is superb and very near to Bukit Bintang, with plenty of shops, restaurants and places to visit nearby. Overall, the location is great, but the hotel really needs renovation, better maintenance, improved lift service and better breakfast choices.

Breakfast was served at the ballroom / function room, not sure why. Did not ask about it too. The selections was ok. We came check in this time with car, took almost 30 minutes for short distance to arrive the hotel. The traffic was really bad in the day time. We chose to walk everywhere from here. This is my go-to hotel whenever I visit Kuala Lumpur. It's super convenient to get to KLCC via the covered walkways, so you're protected from the elements. This time, I booked for three consecutive nights, but unfortunately, my plans changed last minute for the final night, and I had to go elsewhere. I tried negotiating with the hotel multiple times to see if they could offer a free cancellation or at least a discount for the last night to minimize my loss, but they refused every time. It would be great if they showed a bit more flexibility in the future. Ctrip, on the other hand, was quite helpful; they gave me some points as a partial subsidy, which was a nice gesture. It just goes to show that a strong platform can offer some peace of mind.

Location is good. It’s about a 5-minute walk to Bukit Nanas Monorail. The room was great, and the washing machine and dryer were both functioning well. They also provided detergent, which was a nice touch. I stayed in the single room while my parents stayed in the master bedroom. Overall, everything was great except for a very long/non-stop “beeeeeeeep” sound, especially at night. For people who are sensitive to noise, this might be quite annoying, as it was for me. I’m not sure where the sound came from, but I could only hear it when I was in my room, not in the toilet. Maybe it was coming from the air conditioner. When I switched the aircond off or set the temperature around 23–24°C, the sound disappeared. However, when I set the aircond to the coldest temperature, the beeping sound came back.

Firstly, no deposit was required for check-in. Secondly, the hotel booking wasn't last-minute; I had requested a high-floor, king-size bed, and no end-of-corridor room in advance. To my surprise, none of these requests were met. We ended up with twin beds on the 5th floor, and both rooms were at the very ends of the corridor – essentially two 'tail' rooms. The curtains couldn't be opened because they faced directly into someone's apartment, offering a clear view. On the day of check-in, we were traveling from Langkawi back to Kuala Lumpur, and after a tiring journey, both the elderly and children were exhausted, so we just let it go. In one of the rooms, one of the two key cards wasn't activated, so we couldn't enter the room. The hotel's location is good, very close to Pavilion. It's convenient to buy chocolates at Sungei Wang Plaza across the street, and there's a large Watsons downstairs in Isetan.

One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in! Unfortunately, my experience at this hotel was extremely bad, and it is one of the worst and dirtiest hotels I have ever stayed in. The rooms and facilities are very old and dilapidated, and the level of cleanliness is unbearably low, to the extent that I couldn't sleep or feel comfortable due to the extreme dirtiness and poor condition of the hotel. The most surprising thing is that Trip.com mentions in the hotel description that it was renovated in 2025, while the reality is completely different! The hotel looks very old, and its actual condition does not reflect what is stated in the description. I don't know on what basis the website puts this information, and whether it is verified before publishing, or if it is just misleading descriptions for customers? I absolutely do not recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. It was a disappointing experience, and I felt like I paid money for a stay where even the simplest standards of cleanliness and comfort were not available. I hope Trip.com reviews the hotel description and verifies the accuracy of the published information, so that other guests do not suffer the same bad experience.

Oh my goodness! We went straight to the hotel after landing in Kuala Lumpur. We arrived four hours before the 3 PM check-in time, but the hotel welcomed us in the lobby right away. The bellboy was so cute and strong, which really made us feel warm and welcomed upon our arrival. When we got to the 53rd floor, the front desk found two Chinese-speaking staff members to assist us, and they were even a supervisor and a subordinate! It was truly touching. They helped us store our luggage, showed us to the restrooms, and let us choose an aromatherapy scent while offering iced tea and snacks. The whole process was polite, thoughtful, and gentle. When we checked into our room in the afternoon, we couldn't have been happier. It had a bathtub, double sinks, a smart toilet, a king-sized bed, a large sofa, and a spacious shower. In the afternoon, someone even came to turn down the bed and light an aromatherapy diffuser. The breakfast was incredibly exquisite – a combination of buffet and à la carte! Absolutely delicious! The hotel's location is superb, connected to Pavilion via a skybridge, so we didn't have to worry about sun or rain when going in and out. It truly maximized our sense of happiness and relaxation during the trip! Most importantly, we had an unobstructed view of the Petronas Twin Towers and all of Kuala Lumpur. Jalan Alor was right behind Pavilion; it's such a prime location! I highly, highly recommend Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur!

I wouldn't recommend staying here if you don't speak English. Communication was a nightmare, and the front desk staff weren't very clear. Basically, the language barrier combined with an unaccommodating front desk made everything difficult. The location isn't great either; you need a taxi to get anywhere, and walking takes about half an hour. The room itself was just okay. I was swayed by good reviews saying the front desk had friendly female staff and that early check-in was possible for a fee. But when I got there, it was all male staff at the front desk. I had to wait for a room immediately, and paying extra for early check-in wasn't even an option. I arrived in the early morning and couldn't check in until 1:30 PM. Also, I saw that breakfast was included when I booked, but when I asked, they said it would cost 17 MYR. For 230 a night, it's really not worth it. I might as well have stayed at a hostel in Chinatown or a hotel with a pool for better photo opportunities. I just wanted my own room, but it ended up being a lot of hassle, very tiring, and I didn't get good rest. I don't recommend it; it was quite a miserable stay.

Quite a surprise! I booked this hotel last minute, and the price was great. After checking in, I found it to be very clean and much quieter than the hotel next door. It has a pool, and when you store your luggage, they give you a proper tag, unlike other hotels where they just haphazardly leave it at the front desk. After a long day of sightseeing, I was too tired to go out, so I ordered takeout to the hotel. Overall, I'm very satisfied.
