Visited one of Japan's top three hot spring towns and booked a traditional Japanese-style room at a century-old hotel, which included two meals. The hotel offers a shuttle service from the train station, which was incredibly convenient. Check-in was a breeze thanks to the friendly staff at the front desk who spoke Chinese. The room was exceptionally spacious with stunning views from the window – perfect for two people. The hot springs themselves, both indoor and outdoor, were wonderful. Gero Onsen truly lived up to its reputation; my skin felt incredibly smooth after a soak. Free cold drinks were available post-soak, and the milk from the vending machine was particularly delicious! The meals provided by the hotel were also plentiful and tasty. The entire hotel had a very authentic Japanese ambiance. Although we only stayed for one night, we're already looking forward to a longer visit in the future! Highly recommended to everyone.

I honestly can't give this guesthouse even a slightly bad review; it's a perfect 100 out of 100, no, make that 150 points! The staff, both the young man and the ladies, prepared breakfast for us early. At 7:27 AM, they politely called our room to let us know breakfast was ready (it was supposed to start at 8 AM, but they knew we had a bus to catch, so they prepared it ahead of time). And when we arrived at the bus station yesterday, the young man was already waiting for us there, helping us carry our luggage upstairs to the front desk. The emotional value they provided was off the charts, and breakfast and dinner were both perfect! There's truly nothing to pick apart. No wonder this guesthouse has no bad reviews; it would feel wrong to give it even 0.1 points less. It absolutely deserves full marks plus 50 points!

The hotel is in a convenient location and offers great facilities, including coin laundry, a coffee machine, a public bath, and even massage chairs for relaxation. While most staff members were not particularly friendly, there was one young gentleman who stood out for his warm and helpful attitude.

One of the most unforgettable stays we’ve ever had. From the moment my family stepped through the door, we were wrapped in a warm, cosy ambience that instantly made us feel at ease. The room was impeccably clean and wonderfully comfortable, offering the perfect space to relax and unwind. Both dinner and breakfast were nothing short of exceptional—each meal thoughtfully prepared and absolutely delightful. The onsen, overlooking a serene river view, was the true highlight, creating a tranquil and almost dreamlike experience. Every moment spent there felt precious and completely worthwhile.

I chose this hotel because of its location and really good nightly price for a ryokan, which exceeded my expectations. I was also amazed by how massive the hotel was. Overall, I had an exceptional experience staying here. It’s less than an 6-minute walk from Gero Station. The hotel seems to wait for each train’s arrival to pick up guests, which was a nice gesture. We arrived quite early—several hours before check-in—but were able to store our luggage. The check-in process was smooth, and the staff who attended to us did an excellent job explaining the hotel’s facilities, services, and amenities. The service was truly top-notch. The room we reserved was very spacious, with plenty of room to move around and arrange our belongings. Everything was well-maintained, clean, and tidy. The beds were comfortable—I slept very well. The breakfast was wonderful. The dining hall is large and well-organized; despite how crowded it gets during breakfast time, it didn’t feel packed. The food selection was remarkable, with a wide variety of dishes to try. The onsen was incredible. I took multiple baths while trying out the different public onsen—there are three at the hotel, each offering a unique vibe. The facilities and amenities were exactly as advertised in the Services & Amenities section. Out of my recent two-week trip, this accommodation will be the most memorable—not only because I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, but also because I won Monkey D. Luffy Gear 5 figures from the claw machines in their game corner. It was so much fun.

I forgot to take pictures of the hotel. I stayed on the first floor, which was super convenient as I had a lot of luggage. The hotel interior was incredibly clean and felt fresh — excellent! The room was stylish, and the bed was large – absolutely no complaints. There was a hot spring right next door, and I wish I had gone there. This time, I came for snowboarding and drove from Meiho Ski Resort. So, I looked for a hot spring on the way back and ended up at Kamihonoyu. That hot spring was also fantastic, highly recommended! It's a bit of a walk, but there was a yakiniku place nearby where we had dinner. Right next to it was a Chinese restaurant, and I was really torn, so next time I go, I want to try the Chinese place. It felt like a local spot and was bustling with customers, so I bet it's delicious! It's a bit far from the ski resort, but I got a great deal on the stay, so I'd love to come back if I get the chance!

This was the first hotel we stayed at in Takayama. The room was quite spacious, and the public hot spring facilities were a nice bonus. In the evenings, they offered tangyuan (sweet glutinous rice balls) and ochazuke (rice with tea) as a late-night snack. The breakfast had a good variety of options, and it seemed like most of the guests were foreigners. The location was excellent, very close to the station and all the main attractions, so no complaints there. The only downside was that the prices jumped significantly for the next day due to the Takayama Festival, so we ended up switching to a different hotel.

Impression: Ogawaya was one of the three day-trip options I considered for my Gero trip last summer, and it left a great impression then. So, when planning this winter trip, I really wanted to stay here for a night. Since I booked late, I was lucky to even snag a room. Service: The front desk had a Chinese-speaking staff member who was, hands down, the loveliest Chinese-speaking person I encountered on any of my trips. Unlike some uncomfortable experiences I had at Dormy Inn Kumamoto and with the Nohi bus today, this young lady was genuinely warm and friendly. Facilities: During my day trip last summer, I only got to use the women's bath that was open in the afternoon. It was very clean and had a silk bath. This time, I tried the other bath in the morning, but I still feel that Sagi-no-yu has a more unique charm. Also, on the first floor of the scenic view building where I stayed, there's a 'Can Onsen' (sparkling onsen) which is open to women from afternoon to evening. It features a highly concentrated carbonated hot spring. Although it's artificial, it's definitely worth trying. The lobby has a self-service drink bar, and after a hot spring bath, enjoying a cold orange juice while watching the river flow by outside the window is incredibly relaxing. Drawbacks: The only downside was the noise from my next-door neighbors. I don't know who they were, but this is the only Japanese hotel I've stayed in where I've experienced such loud noise. Despite having two layers of doors, I was disturbed both in the evening and in the morning. Highlights: A great bonus is that the hotel's refrigerator has a freezer compartment – a freezer compartment! Perfect for storing ice cream!

GGuest UserThe place is really spacious, and you can cook your own meals, which is super convenient! The Nohi Bus Terminal is right downstairs, and JR Takayama Station is only about 100 meters away. There's a supermarket a few hundred meters from here too, so buying groceries and cooking is a breeze! It was such a pleasant surprise, totally exceeded my expectations. I thought a hotel for a few hundred bucks wouldn't be that great, but this place is huge and even has laundry facilities and a kitchen.

EelowThe hotel room is pretty big by Japan standards, and the feeling of the hotel is really grand! Lots of locals were staying there, but the rooms are a little bit dated. The toilet lights were quite dim and the bathrooms could use an update. However, everything worked perfectly and the stay was still extremely enjoyable! The hotel is situated right next to a bus stop so that makes things super convenient! There’s also a family mart behind the hotel (shortcut! go out of the main door, turn right, walk down the ramp, immediately turn right and right again into the small path, go up the stairs past the hotel park, then turn left and cross the small roads, and you’ll find the konbini) The hotel also rents out bicycles to hotel guests FOC, so you can take the bike literally anywhere! We rode to the supermarket (~10 mins away) and also down by the river (10/10 recommended!) and just explored lots around! Gifu is a lovely quiet town and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to experience a side of Japan that isn’t just Tokyo or Osaka.

GGuest UserThis place is super convenient, just a one-minute walk from Takayama Station East Exit! It's also about a 10-minute stroll to Miyagawa Morning Market, which is perfect for a leisurely walk. Takayama itself is so charming and historic, I really loved it ❤️. The hotel's back door leads straight to Ajikura Tengoku, and let me tell you, the Hida beef there is absolutely delicious, even better than Kobe beef! We got our number at 4:45 PM during Golden Week and didn't get to eat until 7:30 PM, but thankfully, since we were staying so close, we could relax at the hotel while waiting. My tip: if you want to eat there, go early to get a number! The only minor downsides were that the room was a bit on the small side, though we could still open our luggage. The public bath was decent, but it was quite crowded during Golden Week. And the breakfast was just okay – probably not worth booking every day if you're staying for a while.

GGuest UserThe hotel is located on a mountain, but they offer a shuttle service to and from Gero Station, which is very convenient. Upon check-in, a staff member gave a detailed introduction to the hotel's facilities and mentioned that the Emperor himself has stayed here twice. The staff member was very meticulous and polite. We stayed for two nights and experienced different room types, both in the main building and the annex. The main building felt a bit older, while the annex was newer and featured private onsen baths in the rooms. The hot springs were excellent. The public bath was spacious, and there were very few people when we visited. Booking a private onsen was easy, though the tubs are quite small. Breakfast was thoughtfully prepared, with different dishes served each of the two days. Most of the hotel staff can speak English, and there's even Chinese-speaking staff at the front desk.

MM60550****Environment and Service: The hotel is quite large and relatively new, with a big courtyard perfect for a stroll. There's also a shuttle service to and from the station. The only minor drawback is that rooms on one side face the train tracks, which can be a bit noisy, and the soundproofing isn't great.

MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
