Visited one of Japan's top three hot spring towns and booked a traditional Japanese-style room at a century-old hotel, which included two meals. The hotel offers a shuttle service from the train station, which was incredibly convenient. Check-in was a breeze thanks to the friendly staff at the front desk who spoke Chinese. The room was exceptionally spacious with stunning views from the window – perfect for two people. The hot springs themselves, both indoor and outdoor, were wonderful. Gero Onsen truly lived up to its reputation; my skin felt incredibly smooth after a soak. Free cold drinks were available post-soak, and the milk from the vending machine was particularly delicious! The meals provided by the hotel were also plentiful and tasty. The entire hotel had a very authentic Japanese ambiance. Although we only stayed for one night, we're already looking forward to a longer visit in the future! Highly recommended to everyone.

This was my second stay at the Washington Hotel in Takayama, and I'll start with the pros. It's incredibly convenient, located directly across from Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center. From the platform, it's less than a 50-meter walk to the hotel lobby, which is super handy. For travelers catching early buses to Shirakawa-go, Kamikochi, or Furukawa (especially recommended during cherry blossom season), this location is a huge advantage. All the nearby attractions are within walking distance, and the drugstore, restaurants, and specialty shops next to the hotel are among the last to close in Takayama. This is a big deal because many restaurants and shops in Takayama are quite particular, operating only four or five hours (or even just two or three) a day and often closing three or four days a week. Some restaurants even stop taking customers by 6 or 7 PM. We joked that at night, Takayama is full of 'hungry ghosts' wandering around! The hotel's toothbrushes are still the 'old style' and are much better than those in many other hotels. The triple room layout was well-designed and felt spacious when organized properly. The shower had good pressure and was very comfortable. What needs improvement is the shower curtain – it's too thin, so the strong shower spray easily splashes outside the tub. The breakfast is only a Japanese set meal. I tried it one day, and the taste was just so-so. I skipped it the second day, and it was still the same on the third, so I decided not to eat it again. The breakfast options are too limited; it looks good but doesn't taste great. Other hotel services were still good. The triple room had two trash cans, which shows thoughtful attention to detail. The overall bathroom facilities felt a bit old, and the extractor fan wasn't very powerful... Oh, and the hotel offers a hot spring ♨️ with pretty long opening hours, but I didn't get to try it, so I can't comment. All in all, for this price, being able to stay in such an extremely convenient, central location near the station (and commercial center) is definitely worth it. On a side note, I'm not sure if it's due to an economic downturn or the off-season, but Shirakawa-go and Takayama were noticeably less fun, less interesting to explore, and had fewer good shopping and dining options than my previous two visits. 'Travel early!' is truly not an empty phrase.

The room was a bit small, suitable for one person. It's very close to Takayama Station, and there's a McDonald's not far downstairs. Overall, it was decent, but perhaps due to the peak season for hiking in Kamikochi, the price was quite high, so the value for money wasn't great.

One of the most unforgettable stays we’ve ever had. From the moment my family stepped through the door, we were wrapped in a warm, cosy ambience that instantly made us feel at ease. The room was impeccably clean and wonderfully comfortable, offering the perfect space to relax and unwind. Both dinner and breakfast were nothing short of exceptional—each meal thoughtfully prepared and absolutely delightful. The onsen, overlooking a serene river view, was the true highlight, creating a tranquil and almost dreamlike experience. Every moment spent there felt precious and completely worthwhile.

To be honest considering this has a 4 star rating I'm a bit disappointed. Generally speaking it is a nice place but there are small things that are lacking compared to other similar Onsen Hotels at the same price. For example they don't provide a basket to go to the onsen but only a cheap plastic bag. The Hotel itself is very old but well maintained and at least the general spaces use nice materials and decoration. Once you reach the room it becomes worse. The materials used in the room are very cheap (Vinyl Floor, Cheap Wallpaper that was put on very poorly). Some aspects of the room have been refurnished, like the sink but most of it seems to be original from the 60s-80s. The bathtub and Toilet are retro models. The Onsen baths are a mixed bag - the one on the third floor with Wood ceiling seems to be the newest and is the best of the three. The other two (panorama and first floor) are in dire need of refurbishing. They seem in very bad condition and extremly old. The worst part (for me) was the Breakfast. 90% of the selection was japanese Style (and even that seemed poor). Western Options were only Pancakes, French Toast (which was good at least) and a few sad pieces of low quality bread with condiments. They didn't even have a coffee machine!!! Only pre-brewed coffee that tasted like water.

We had a fantastic stay at Spa Gift Takayama. The hotel was modern, clean, and beautifully designed. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, making our stay very relaxing. The onsen facilities were excellent and well maintained. After a day of exploring Takayama, it was wonderful to soak in the hot spring and unwind. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was peaceful and welcoming. The staff were friendly, professional, and always happy to assist. The location was also convenient, with easy access to the old town, restaurants, and local attractions. Overall, Spa Gift Takayama exceeded our expectations and was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Takayama.

Impression: Ogawaya was one of the three day-trip options I considered for my Gero trip last summer, and it left a great impression then. So, when planning this winter trip, I really wanted to stay here for a night. Since I booked late, I was lucky to even snag a room. Service: The front desk had a Chinese-speaking staff member who was, hands down, the loveliest Chinese-speaking person I encountered on any of my trips. Unlike some uncomfortable experiences I had at Dormy Inn Kumamoto and with the Nohi bus today, this young lady was genuinely warm and friendly. Facilities: During my day trip last summer, I only got to use the women's bath that was open in the afternoon. It was very clean and had a silk bath. This time, I tried the other bath in the morning, but I still feel that Sagi-no-yu has a more unique charm. Also, on the first floor of the scenic view building where I stayed, there's a 'Can Onsen' (sparkling onsen) which is open to women from afternoon to evening. It features a highly concentrated carbonated hot spring. Although it's artificial, it's definitely worth trying. The lobby has a self-service drink bar, and after a hot spring bath, enjoying a cold orange juice while watching the river flow by outside the window is incredibly relaxing. Drawbacks: The only downside was the noise from my next-door neighbors. I don't know who they were, but this is the only Japanese hotel I've stayed in where I've experienced such loud noise. Despite having two layers of doors, I was disturbed both in the evening and in the morning. Highlights: A great bonus is that the hotel's refrigerator has a freezer compartment – a freezer compartment! Perfect for storing ice cream!

Hhwee yin LeeA wonderful experience staying in a studio apartment with the kitchenette. You may visit the near by Boss supermarket or the other opposite supermarket to purchase hida beef and grill them in the apartment instead of eating in the grill shop. Save lots of money. So close to train station and Nohi bus terminal, less than 3 minutes walking. Easy to get around for 1 day trip like Shirakawago, Ropeway, Gero, Hirayu onsen. Staff do not speak fluent English but they do understand English. Coffee, tea are all provided in the front desk. For me, only thing that I dislike is the hard pillow. Overall excellent stay 👍.

EelowThe hotel room is pretty big by Japan standards, and the feeling of the hotel is really grand! Lots of locals were staying there, but the rooms are a little bit dated. The toilet lights were quite dim and the bathrooms could use an update. However, everything worked perfectly and the stay was still extremely enjoyable! The hotel is situated right next to a bus stop so that makes things super convenient! There’s also a family mart behind the hotel (shortcut! go out of the main door, turn right, walk down the ramp, immediately turn right and right again into the small path, go up the stairs past the hotel park, then turn left and cross the small roads, and you’ll find the konbini) The hotel also rents out bicycles to hotel guests FOC, so you can take the bike literally anywhere! We rode to the supermarket (~10 mins away) and also down by the river (10/10 recommended!) and just explored lots around! Gifu is a lovely quiet town and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to experience a side of Japan that isn’t just Tokyo or Osaka.

GGuest UserThe location is the best value adding item to this hotel, they only offered limited room cleaning so it may take a while to adjust if you are international travellers. Having the microwave and washing machine in the room is another key advantage of this hotel, overall I will say this is one of the best options in Takayama. Oh they also have free water machines every floor so you can save up buying bottles from convenient stores.

GGuest UserA lovely location to enjoy an onsen and cute little town. 2-3 nights is the perfect amount of time for this hotel. The town is very small and you can walk through the temple just Infront of the hotel to reach it. Although the hill is very steep, the stairs make it manageable but it's alot of stairs. On arrival the shuttle bus is waiting for you and they take your luggage to the room. A staff member guides you to your room and explains when the shuttle leaves, where to go to explore the hotel, breakfast and public bath times. The public bath is open between 3pm and 1am, closes for cleaning than opens again from 5am to 10am and closes for cleaning again. During each cleaning they switch the male and female public bathing zones so everyone has a chance to experience each bath. I chose a room with a private bath and a mountain view. The private bath is small but big enough for 2 people if you're both sitting, it also has a window that opens up. The view is stunning. Breakfast starts around 7am and last service is at 8:30am. If you stay 2 nights they will give 2 different breakfasts. Green tea, coffee, juice and milk are the only drinks at breakfast. Soft drink is available at reception during the afternoon. The Hilda beef steak meal provided by the hotel racks up the price with it being $70 AUD per person and for comparison, in town, a similar meal was around $40 AUD per person. If you really want a dinner at the hotel than try out the paid dinner but there's a few good spots to eat in town. There's this one restaurant called Senda that is a good price and just left of the big hotel direction sign at the bottom of the mountain. If you are unsure of where to go than pick up the local food map at the town info office. Anyway, good hotel for a city getaway as well as an opportunity to take the Shinkansen and local train from Tokyo (4 hours from Tokyo but great views and easy transfer)

JJ.LUKOverall experience was great. Hotel is quite new, with comfortable bed, clean towels and strong shower. Room is nicely setup and spacious. Check-in check-out was efficient. However, one thing I am a bit disappointed was that the cleaning staff didn’t help to wash the used mugs and vacuum the floor everyday. We saw lots of hair on the floor. Maybe this is not a common practice.

MM60550****Environment and Service: The hotel is quite large and relatively new, with a big courtyard perfect for a stroll. There's also a shuttle service to and from the station. The only minor drawback is that rooms on one side face the train tracks, which can be a bit noisy, and the soundproofing isn't great.

MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
