"This is a fabulous place for an authentic Japanese holiday. The location is beautiful. The outdoor hot spring bathing area is clean and looks like a movie set. The included meals are generous in portion size and are delicious. Our room overlooked the river and it was great. Tatami floors and shoji screen windows. This is an old and historic place and does not cater to western norms. You sleep on futons on the floor. Only Japanese food is available. But it is a wonderful place to spend some time."

"Great location and overall a good stay. I would consider staying again. However, the soundproofing was very poor. I could clearly hear noise from the hallway and the neighboring room, including an alarm that rang for a long time early in the morning. If you are sensitive to noise, this hotel may not be suitable. 立地がとても良く、全体的には満足でした。また宿泊候補の一つです。ただし、防音がかなり悪く、廊下や隣の部屋の音、早朝のアラーム音がはっきり聞こえました。音に敏感な方にはおすすめできません。"

"This hotel has a lot of character. Even though it's a hundred years old, it doesn't feel dated at all. I didn't experience the issues with poor soundproofing or creaky floors that some other reviews mentioned. The service was excellent! There's a free shuttle to and from the Kusatsu Bus Terminal, though you need to call to book it. If you don't have a phone, you can ask someone at the bus station to help you contact them. There's also complimentary coffee and snacks on the first floor. All the little service details really made us feel at home. The public bath experience was great; it wasn't crowded, and both the indoor and outdoor baths were very comfortable. There was even water and essence available at the hair-drying station. The room was spacious, and the futons were laid out in advance in the evening, which was very comfortable."

"Kanemidori is a short walk from the bus depot. The staff at the reception and restaurant in the hotel were all very nice and helpful. The futons and bedding in the room are very comfortable and warm for winter. You can also control your own in room heater. The hotel onsen is well maintained with full amenities: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, face pack, hair treatment, and multiple types of lotion. We booked the room only but added on a dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Both meals were carefully prepared and delicious. The main tourist area is within walking distance of the hotel and you can go around in the yukata paired with the long and short kimono jackets provided by the hotel in the winter."

"The facilities were very clean as they had just been renovated. The buffet had a great variety, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious! The heating in the room was apparently faulty, but I suspect the entire facility might have had issues, as even with the provided heater, some areas were very cold. At dinner, we were seated near the entrance, and it was so incredibly cold that many of the dishes were already cool, which was a real shame. When I went to the onsen in the morning, the changing room was so cold it felt like being outside. I warmed up in the hot spring, but then got cold again in the changing room. Also, there was a lot of hair on the floor near the dryers in the changing room, which was quite unpleasant. I used the onsen three times but never saw any staff cleaning it. There were hair straighteners in addition to dryers, but there were no outlets to plug in my own, which was also disappointing. I hope these issues can be improved."

"This was my first time staying at this hotel privately, but as it's a new one, it was clean and comfortable. I stayed in a twin room, and the space was more than satisfactory. My only complaint was the food in the restaurant. They're committed to cutting costs, so they keep the staff to a minimum, and apart from the all-you-can-drink option, they only offer beer and sake; you can't order sours or highballs. Why? There's a wide variety of food, but most of it is thawed and reheated. I guess this is common in business hotels these days."

"Ikaho Onsen is a town you really have to make an effort to visit. Buses on Saturdays and Sundays are very infrequent; I waited two hours when I stayed there, so I had to take a taxi. You can ask the taxi driver to stop at the ancient Mizusawa Temple before reaching your accommodation. The hotel is incredibly cute and charming. I didn't expect much, but it was amazing, especially the food – 100 out of 100! It was filling, beautifully presented, delicious, and wonderful. The hotel has a beautiful golden-brown onsen with a great atmosphere. Highly recommended. The accommodation is on a hill, so if you have heavy luggage, it will be tiring to drag it from the bus stop. Taking a taxi is much more convenient. Walking from the hotel's parking area leads directly to many tourist attractions – super convenient! I've traveled a lot in Japan, but this is the town and accommodation I truly love and am most impressed with. For the return trip, I recommend taking a taxi to the train station; just tell the hotel you've booked one. Highly recommended!"

MmathemathusMy stay at Kamenoi Hotel Kusatsu was excellent. The onsen was very clean and quite spacious, making it a relaxing experience. The hotel also has a convenient shortcut that leads directly to the Yubatake pedestrian area, which is a big plus. Both breakfast and dinner were buffet-style with a wide variety of dishes — plenty of options and all very enjoyable. The service was great, and the room was comfortable to sleep in. The only downside is that there were a bit too few power outlets in the room, but it wasn’t a major problem. Overall, a fantastic stay and highly recommended for anyone visiting Kusatsu.

JJoeTmStayed for 2 nights in early Dec 2024. Booked the mountain view twin room with cypress bath which comes with both dinner and breakfast. The ryokan styled hotel is located diagonally opposite from the shibukawa bus stop and about 5 mins walk (turn right from the hotel) to the Ikaho stone steps around the mid section of the steps. The hotel is old ryokan style but well maintained and does not see much wear and tear. The lobby which is on the 3rd floor (ground level) is big. No shoes allowed in the hotel, guests have to deposit their shoes at the entrance. Staff were all friendly and polite though not all can speak well in English. They do go much more to make you feel at home. Yutaka is provided at the lobby. My room which is located on the 4th floor corner is considered big. Old styled ryokan kind of design but with western bed. Though the room is laid with tatami on the floor but can still hear people walking if they area heavy or run. Corridor noise does filter in as well but muffled. Unblocked view of the mountain as the hotel sits on an elevated hill. I would recommend to stay with mountain view. The cypress bath can fit 2 person but takes a while to fill, I rather go to the public onsen. Besides the usual amenities, they even provide face wash, face moisturiser, etc in the room. Safe box is provided in the room as well. Wifi seems weak. No place in the bathroom however to hang your clothes or towel. There is an indoor onsen on the first floor and an outdoor one on the 8th floor. The onsen are gender separated. They rotate the male and female onsen on the first floor though both has the same look and facilities. The onsen on the 8th floor has a nice view of the city but no shower facilities. There is a massage chair on the first floor as well. Breakfast and dinner are served on the 2nd floor. I would not say that this is the best, but definitely delicious and sufficient. Check in at 3 pm and check out at 10am which I find a bit too early. Hope they can consider to extend. Overall I would recommend this place to stay if you are coming to ikaho.

GGuest UserCharming ryokan with excellent service! After renting a car near Karuizawa station, we arrived at Kusatsu onsen town to find the narrow roads packed with holidaymakers. It was quite harrowing finding our way to the ryokan after circling around. On arrival the front office people were very helpful and led me to a free parking area some distance away. Our experience was very much as described by past reviewers...a traditional ryokan right in heart of the hot spring attraction centre. The room was very spacious. Dinner and breakfast were good enough but no wow factor. What was most delightful for our stay was the very friendly and attentive Nepalese front-end staff named Khadka, who made it easy for us with his good English. He was almost always there to attend to our every need and we enjoyed our conversation with him when he served us at the bar. I would highly recommend having drinks at the bar with its cosy ambience and enjoying the front seats facing the window where we can see people walking by as well as a view of the pagoda. Our stay there was memorable!

YYvonne002Traveling with my best friend, we booked a tatami room with half board (dinner and breakfast included). It had two beds within the tatami setup. The room was compact but very clean, and they provided a basket for each of us with a bath towel and toiletries, which was super convenient for taking to the hot springs. The absolute highlight was the two meals – fresh ingredients like Japanese cuisine and the exquisite presentation of French dishes. Absolutely perfect!

EElena FesenkoKusatsu itself is a magnificent place. The hotel is located right in the center. The room type was traditional with futons, and we had a mountain view, which was stunning in the morning. The hotel is well-maintained. Kkuumi. The hotel was very clean, and the staff were incredibly polite. It was definitely worth the money I paid. I also got to try both types of private open-air baths, and the in-room open-air bath was spacious enough. All the meals were delicious and thoroughly satisfying. My only minor disappointment was that the next course was brought out very quickly, one after another, before I had even finished the previous one. This might have been because we had the 8 PM dinner slot. I'd recommend booking your dinner time early if you can. I wasn't able to choose and only had the 8 PM slot available. Also, I was advised that the earlier breakfast slots were recommended and that other times might not allow me to fully enjoy the meal, but that wasn't the case at all. Everything was fine.
