However, you must consider a complete documentation and planning to meet your destination's health, documentation and import requirements.

You should start preparing at least 1–3 months in advance if you are travelling to countries with stricter regulations and if Japan is your destination, we recommended to plan it at least 6-8 months from your departure date.

Step-by-Step Guide To Taking Your Pet Abroad from Singapore

Travelling overseas with your fur babies requires complete planning and preparation as the exact requirements are vary by countries.

Step 1: Research Your Destination

Check your holiday destination country's pet import requirements, such as vaccination rules, microchipping, health certificates, quarantine regulations and any required import permits.

Step 2: Microchip Your Pet

Many of the countries required their pets to be identified with an ISO-compliant microchip before they can enter the country for holidays.

So, if your pet did not microchipped yet, you can arrange with your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Step 3: Complete Required Vaccinations and Health Examination

You have to ensure your pet to receive all mandatory vaccinations including rabies.

In addition, you can schedule a health examination with the veterinarian as they can issue whether your pet is fit to travel or not.

Step 4: Apply for Import and Export Permits

Depends on your travel destinations, you may need to apply an export permit from SIngapore and import permit from destination country

You can apply earlier in advance as the processing times may vary.

Step 5: Book a Pet-Friendly Airline

You should choose an airline that accepts pets and reserve your pet's space early as airlines often limit the number of animals that allowed on each flight.

You should confirm the carrier size requirements, fees and check in procedures.

You also should prepare an airline-approved pet carrier that is large enough for your pet to stand, turn around or lie down comfortably.

After you arrive at the airport, you can follow the destination country's pet import procedures as they have to undergo some document verification and custom inspection before being released.

Rules for Bringing Pets into Japan

Japan is the most popular destinations if you want to bring your pet but it is one of the most challenging countries to enter with pet because Japan enforces strict animal import regulations to avoid rabies-free status, so the careful and advance preparation is needed.

You may take at least 8 months to your first rabies vaccination and many veterinars recommended to start up to one year before your planned departure to allow enough time to complete all the requirements.

Before travelling, you'll generally need to complete several important steps, including:

1. Have an ISO-compliant microchip implanted.
2. You'll need to get two doses of the rabies vaccine, spaced at least one month apart, and wait 14 days after the second dose before you can take the antibody test.
3. Get the Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titer Test (RNATT), and your antibody titer must be 0.5 IU/mL or higher to be good to go. 
4. Once your pet passes the antibody test, you'll need to wait another 180 days before bringing them into Japan, and you must submit a formal application to the quarantine office at your intended arrival airport in Japan no later than 40 days before departure. 
5. Within 10 days before departure, you’ll need a health certificate issued by an official veterinarian.
6. If any of the steps above don't meet the requirements, your furry friend could face up to 180 days of mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Japan.

Rules for Bringing Pets into South Korea

Compared to Japan, South Korea offers a more straightforward process for travelling with pets and the requirements is less complicated but still have to complete the documentation before flying.

If your pet meets South Korea's import requirements including a valid rabies antibody (titre) test, where applicable under the country's import rules, you may avoid quarantine upon arrival.

Before flying, you must prepare:

• ISO 15-digit microchip (must be implanted before vaccination)
• Rabies Vaccination Record
• FAVN Antibody Titer Test Report (≥ 0.5 IU/mL)
• Export Animal Quarantine Certificate issued by Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture
• Permit for the importation of dogs and cats issued by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, Ministry of Agriculture (the application date must be at least 20 calendar days before the expected arrival in Korea)

Travelling with pets to China can be possible but pet owners must prepare the required documents and follow China regulations as Singapore is classified as the designated region by China Customs.

They must meet all the conditions such as:

• Only cats and dogs are allowed
• Microchip requirements
• Rabies vaccination
• Export health certificate from Singapore

Rules for Bringing Pets into Europe

Bringing your dog or cat from Singapore to Europe requires careful preparation, as the European Union (EU) follows a strict and standardised pet import system. Pet owners must ensure their animals meet all health and documentation requirements before travelling.

For most EU countries, pets must have an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip implanted before receiving a rabies vaccination.

A valid rabies vaccination certificate is also required, along with an EU Animal Health Certificate completed by an authorised veterinarian in Singapore and endorsed by the relevant official authorities.

Bringing your dog or cat from Singapore to the United States is generally straightforward compared with many destinations, as Singapore is considered a rabies-free country for dog rabies risk purposes.

However, pet owners still need to meet the requirements set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and prepare the necessary documents before departure.
