Best Time To Visit Switzerland

Are you ready to embark on a breathtaking journey to Switzerland? Discovering the best time to visit Switzerland is the key to unlocking a truly enchanting experience.

Nestled amidst the stunning Alpine landscapes, Switzerland offers a wealth of natural beauty, cultural wonders and exhilaration adventures throughout the year.

Whether you're seeking snowy peaks, vibrant blooms, or festive markets, each season brings its own unique charm.

We will dive into each season, helping you plan an unforgettable trip to this picturesque country.

Spring: Awakening Nature and Cultural Delights

Lake Zurich

Spring in Switzerland's is a time of incredible transformation, as nature awakens from its winter slumber.

Spring in Switzerland runs from March to May, bringing milder temperatures, blooming flowers and longer days. It is a good time to explore cities and lower altitude destinations, although mountain areas can still have snow early in the season.

Enjoy Switzerland's Spring Scenery

By April and May, many lower altitude areas begin turning green, while flowers add colour to the countryside. Lakes, valleys and historic towns are particularly pleasant to explore as the weather becomes milder.

Keep in mind that temperatures can vary significantly depending on altitude. Some mountain destinations may still feel cold and have snow well into spring.

Go Hiking in Late Spring

Late spring is a good time for outdoor activities in lower altitude areas. Trails around the Bernese Oberland, lakes and countryside become increasingly accessible as the weather improves.

If you are planning a mountain hike, check the latest trail conditions first, as some higher altitude routes may still be closed because of snow.

Experience Swiss Spring Festivals

Spring also brings several cultural events across Switzerland. In Zurich, Sechseläuten traditionally takes place in April and marks the end of winter with the burning of the Böögg figure.

Basel also hosts its famous Basel Carnival, known locally as Basler Fasnacht, which usually takes place in late winter or early spring.

Explore Switzerland's Cities

Spring is a comfortable time to explore cities such as Zurich, Geneva and Lucerne. Spend the day visiting museums, historic landmarks and local markets, then enjoy Swiss favourites such as cheese fondue, raclette and chocolate.

Summer: Embrace The Alpine Bliss

Alps

June to August is the main summer season in Switzerland and one of the most popular periods to visit. The weather is generally warm in the lowlands, mountain trails become more accessible and the longer daylight hours give you more time for sightseeing.

Enjoy Warm Weather and Longer Days

Summer temperatures in Switzerland vary depending on location and altitude. Lowland cities can be warm, while mountain areas remain noticeably cooler.

The longer days make summer particularly suitable for scenic walks, day trips and outdoor activities.

Hike Through the Swiss Alps

Summer is one of the best seasons for hiking in Switzerland. Many mountain trails are accessible, offering views of alpine meadows, glaciers, lakes and snow covered peaks.

Popular areas include the Bernese Oberland, Zermatt, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen Valley. Always check the local weather and trail conditions before setting out, especially when travelling to higher elevations.

Enjoy Switzerland's Lakes

Switzerland's lakes are another highlight during summer. Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne and Lake Zurich are popular places for boat trips and waterfront activities.

A scenic lake cruise can also be a relaxing way to enjoy Switzerland's mountain scenery without spending the entire day hiking.

Take a Scenic Train Journey

Summer is a great time to experience Switzerland's famous scenic rail routes. The Glacier Express travels between Zermatt and St. Moritz, while the Bernina Express connects Chur with Tirano in Italy.

Both journeys showcase Switzerland's dramatic mountain scenery, valleys, villages and impressive railway bridges.

Autumn: A Tapestry of Colors and Tranquility

Town of Spiez

September to November brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves and fewer visitors compared with the peak summer months. Autumn can be a great choice if you want to enjoy Switzerland at a slower pace.

See Switzerland's Autumn Colours

Forests, vineyards and mountain valleys gradually turn shades of yellow, orange and red during autumn. Areas such as Lavaux, Valais and the Bernese Oberland are particularly scenic during this period.

The exact timing of autumn foliage varies depending on altitude and location, so colours may appear earlier in higher areas.

Enjoy Cooler Weather and Fewer Crowds

September can still feel pleasantly warm in many parts of Switzerland, while October and November become increasingly cool.

With fewer tourists than during the summer peak, autumn can be a comfortable period for exploring cities, villages and scenic attractions at a more relaxed pace.

Visit Switzerland's Wine Regions

Autumn is also an interesting time to visit Switzerland's vineyards, particularly in Valais, Vaud and Ticino. The grape harvest takes place during this period, with local events and wine related activities held in some regions.

Take in Mountain Views by Cable Car

Cable cars continue to provide access to many mountain viewpoints during autumn, although operating schedules can vary by destination.

Popular excursions include Schilthorn and Mount Titlis, where you can enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding Alps. Always check operating dates and weather conditions before travelling.

Winter: A Snowy Adventure Wonderland

Matterhorn

December to February is Switzerland's main winter season, making it an excellent choice for travellers looking for snow, skiing and festive experiences.

Stay in a Swiss Mountain Resort

Winter is the perfect time to experience Switzerland's alpine resorts. Stay in a mountain village, enjoy views of snow covered peaks and warm up with Swiss comfort food such as fondue and raclette.

Popular winter destinations include Zermatt, St. Moritz and Verbier, although conditions can vary throughout the season.

Go Skiing and Snowboarding

Switzerland is famous for its ski resorts and winter sports. Zermatt offers views of the Matterhorn, St. Moritz is known for its upscale alpine atmosphere, while Verbier is popular for its extensive ski terrain.

If skiing is not your thing, many resorts also offer other winter activities such as sledding and snowshoeing.

Visit Christmas Markets

December brings a festive atmosphere to Swiss cities and towns. Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and Montreux are popular destinations for Christmas markets, where you can browse seasonal gifts, try local treats and enjoy festive decorations.

Try Winter Hiking and Snowshoeing

You do not have to ski to enjoy Switzerland in winter. Snowshoeing and winter hiking are available in many alpine areas, offering a quieter way to experience snow covered forests, valleys and mountain scenery.

Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out, and make sure you have suitable winter clothing and footwear.

Overall, it was quite good. The room was new, and the hotel itself was also very new and clean. The only downside is that the location is a bit out of the way. Also, the staff came in to clean early in the morning without knocking.

An old luxury hotel with a very good location, right by the lake. It is very convenient to eat, drink and shop around. The room facilities are also well maintained. Fruits and bottled water are provided every day. Flowers are carefully placed in the room. It is indeed Warm-hearted and has the feel of old-style luxury.

The rooms were beautiful, and the hotel itself was lovely. Breakfast was delicious, and the place had a wonderful ambiance. It's a highly recommended hotel; while not cheap, it's absolutely worth the price. It's situated in the financial district, right next to China Construction Bank. Nearby, there's a supermarket, a tram stop, and plenty of Thai restaurants. My overall experience was excellent.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel in the center of Vienna. The location was perfect, with many attractions, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The breakfast offered a great selection of fresh food, and the overall atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zurich and would be happy to stay here again.

The room is clean but it’s cramped, hard to move fast. The front desk staff in the morning particularly the guy is rude. We were a bit early for breakfast because they changed their time from 6:30 to 7am which we aligned for our day activity. When i asked if we can just sit inside while waiting for a few minutes before 7am, he answered me rudely saying “as i said..”, but when we came inside at 7:01am, there were already people eating there, 2 pairs i saw. This is rude because we were pressed for time as we have to catch up the tour bus and we paid for the breakfast knowing the time is 6:30am but they changed it the night before and they let other people in while we just requested to be seated inside while waiting for 7am. Most of their staff are rude. Only the guy at the breakfast checkin is nice.

The room was spacious with a kettle and good ventilation. The shower had excellent hot water pressure. For Switzerland, where food options can be limited, the breakfast was indeed very rich, offering hot items like fried eggs, pancakes, bacon, and sausages (most hotels only offer cold meals). However, when checking in, the front desk girl quoted a discounted breakfast price of 25 CHF. At checkout, a different male staff member tried to charge the original price of 32 CHF. I had to point out the agreed-upon price to get him to charge 25 CHF. It was a bit ridiculous; if I hadn't said anything, would he have just overcharged me? The hotel management has issues and should clearly display breakfast prices. Also, the hotel is located near an office area, so restaurants are closed on weekends.

Hotel is a 10 min walk from the bus station which connects to the train from the airport. The same bus station that takes to the central train station. It costs about 12CHF to 18CHF to or from train station. Hotel provides free rental bicycles which is very convenient. Facilities are OK. Room size is reasonable. Be aware that the uncovered glass of the shower may not suitable for all if privacy is important. The room we stayed were extremely hot. While it is only 14°-18° outside, the room temperature is definitely 30°+. It made hard to wear the proper clothing to fit the temperature for the day. No aircon, the only way to cool the room down is to open the side window which leaves no wall from the room to outside of the building. Yes, the only barrier are a couple of metal bars between the desk against the window to outside the building from our ninth floor room. Plus the window can closed by itself, you need to reopen it multiple times if you want the cooler air for a little longer. It’s hard for a hot night sleep. Breakfast is good and has good variety of the food and drinks. It costs 24CHF p.p. if it is pre-ordered. If stays in the same room, no, it is not recommended to stay here. It may have other rooms that are not as hot as the one we stayed.

The facilities are pretty new overall, and the air conditioning was a lifesaver! I was so touched when I walked into the room and found it already on. They provide a combined shampoo/body wash and soap, but you'll need to bring all other disposable toiletries yourself, which is quite normal for Switzerland. However, the wooden hangers surprisingly bled color onto my clothes, and I couldn't wash it off... I also found the bathroom's lack of a door inexplicable, as it's very easy to get the floor wet. Cleanliness: Very good, clean and tidy. Environment: The neighborhood is very quiet, and there's a tram stop right outside that makes getting to the train station very convenient. Service: The staff member was very enthusiastic. Overall, I'm satisfied.

Service: This is where the hotel truly shines. All the staff were incredibly helpful, professional, and thoughtful. They provided detailed explanations and actively offered assistance. I especially appreciated encountering two Chinese-speaking staff members who not only wished me a Happy New Year but also engaged with me in Chinese, making me feel right at home. Environment: The hotel's location is excellent, very close to the main train station and all the attractions in the Old Town, all within walking distance. The hotel design is appealing, and the little calf statue at the entrance is adorable. Facilities: The room was spacious, especially the bathroom. However, the pillows weren't very comfortable and might not be ideal for people with neck problems. Cleanliness: Generally good, but the details left something to be desired. There was a faint, persistent odor from the refrigerator in the room, even though it was empty, suggesting that ventilation needs improvement. Also, one of the towels had noticeable orange-red stains.

Booked a balcony room but was given a very small room. Everything else was good. Breakfast was plentiful and the service at breakfast was enthusiastic. I highly recommend booking the room with breakfast included, it's actually great value for money. You won't get much for over 200 outside, especially with the prices in Switzerland.

The hotel is right next to the Polybahn funicular, by the Limmat river. From my room window, I could see the funicular bridge, which was quite interesting. For a two-day stay in Zurich, this hotel was definitely worth it. My itinerary was packed, and the hotel's location was super convenient. The price was also reasonable for Zurich.

I was highly disappointed with my stay due to several major issues. First, the room description is completely misleading. I booked a room advertised with a ”City View,” but instead, I was given a room facing an inner courtyard with no city view whatsoever. Secondly, despite clearly booking for 2 guests, the room amenities were strictly prepared for just one person. We were only provided with one bath towel, one standard pillow, and one large pillow for two guests. Finally, the blanket was far too small for two guests sharing a Queen-size bed. Even though I am only 167 cm tall, it was impossible to cover my entire body. If I pulled the blanket up to cover my chest, my feet were exposed; if I covered my feet, my chest was exposed. What made it even more unreasonable was that the blanket was so narrow that it could only comfortably cover one person, despite being provided for a Queen-size bed intended for two guests. I would not recommend this property until these basic hospitality issues are addressed.

The room is great, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. BUT: upon check-in, I was asked to leave MY CREDIT CARD on file for the duration of my stay! This was despite the room already being paid for and charged to my credit card. Of course, I indignantly refused. Then I was asked to put down a 100€ deposit, which I equally firmly rejected (I didn't even have any Euros on me anyway... it was a spur-of-the-moment idea to be in Zurich!). The justification given was that I might raid the minibar without paying, but it was empty anyway. Mercifully, I was then allowed to check into my room without leaving any deposit.

In general, the hotel offers a balance between fee, location, and service. The room is clean, the location is suitable for walking to all the sightseeing places in Zurich. However, it is noteworthy that the bathroom and the toilet are not inside the room, you must go to separate places. This is not mentioned when I place the booking, or I didn’t pay attention to this detail. I travelled during the not-busy season so it is OK, most of the time when I wanted to use the bathroom, it was available. However, during the travel seasons, you should be aware.

Travel Tips for Visiting Switzerland

Lake Zurich

1. Choose Your Travel Season

Switzerland is a year round destination but the experience can be very different depending on when you visit.

Summer is ideal for hiking and sightseeing, while winter is better for snow activities and ski trips. Spring and autumn are good choices if you prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds.

2. Use Trains to Get Around

Travelling by trains is one the easiest ways to explore Switzerland. The network connects major cities, towns and mountain destinations while scenic train routes offer beautiful views along the way.

If you plan to visit several destinations, compare individual tickets with the Swiss travel Pass. It covers trains, buses as well as public transport in more than 90 towns and cities.

3. Check Mountain Weather Before Heading Out

Weather can change quickly in mountains, even during summer. Check the forecast before heading to places such as Jungfrau, Zermatt, or Mount Titlis and bring and extra layer even when the weatherin the city feels warm.

4. Pack Comfortable Shoes

You will likely do plenty of walking in Switzerland, from exploring old towns to walking around train stations and mountain villages.

Comfortable walking shoes are especially useful if you plan to hike or explore destinations at higher elevations.

5. Bring Layers

Switzerland's temperatures vary considerably depending on the season and altitude. Switzerland Tourism recommends packing a sweater, good walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a compact umbrella or light raincoat.

6. Book Popular Mountain Attractions Early

Popular mountain excursions and scenic train journeys can become busy during peak travel periods. If your itinerary includes a popular panoramic train, check whether a seat reservation is required because some services require reservations or additional supplements even when you have a travel pass.

7. Budget More for Your Trip

Switzerland is generally an expensive destination, so set aside a reasonable daily budget for accommodation, food, transport and attractions. Planning your train journeys and attraction tickets in advance can help you manage your spending.

8. Do Not Pack Too Much Into One Day

Switzerland may look small on the map, but travelling between cities and mountain destinations takes time. Instead of rushing through several places in one day, choose a few destinations and give yourself enough time to enjoy each one.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Switzerland

Rigi
