The Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is also the symbol of ancient China. When you are in the majestic and orderly high walls and deep courtyards, you can truly feel its former glory. ▲The long history has left behind large-scale precious buildings and countless cultural relics, which have also become the main attraction of visiting the Forbidden City today. ▲Classic attractions: The Forbidden City Corner Tower is a polygonal building with a convex plane on all four sides. It is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing. The roof has three layers. The upper layer is a hip roof with vertical and horizontal intersections. It is composed of a gable roof with flowing water on two slopes and a hip roof with four slopes. Because there are nine main ridges on this roof, it is called the Nine-ridge Hall. ▲Sundials are divided into two types according to their installation principle: equatorial and horizontal. The sundial installed using the equatorial principle is called an equatorial sundial. The key points of its production are that it must have a time plate, a latitude arc and a gnomon. When operating, the time plate must be parallel to the equatorial plane of the earth, the gnomon must be in the same direction as the earth's axis, and the shadow cast by the gnomon on the gnomon is the desired time. ▲The Treasure House is located in the Ningshou Palace area. It has a rich collection of treasures, including Buddhist supplies, ornaments, daily utensils, and treasures for appreciation. Among them, the red coral lion about 14 cm high, the Dongzhu court beads about 130 cm long, and the gold "Fengtianzhibao" seal are all rare treasures. ▲The Clock and Watch Museum is located in the Fengxian Hall in the palace. Most of the clocks on display are British products, but there are also clocks from other countries such as France and Switzerland. In addition to the timing function, these clocks are decorated with figures, birds, beasts, flowers, etc., which can also make various different movements. They are very delicately made. Among them, the copper-plated gilded writing clock, the copper-plated gilded enamel gourd-top fishing and woodcutting farming clock, and the copper-plated gilded rotating flower running man rhinoceros carrying clock are very rare.Beijing · 1.7km from downtown

Badaling Great Wall

4.7/5
62.9k reviews
The Badaling Great Wall is renowned as one of the Nine Strategic Passes under heaven, combining majestic cliffs with picturesque greenery to form the most spectacular section of the Ming Dynasty fortifications. Living up to the Chinese saying "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true hero," this remains the premier choice for most Chinese visitors to experience the Wall. The fortress gate exhibits a trapezoidal shape, narrower on the east and wider on the west, featuring two gate towers. The eastern arch bears the inscription "Juyong Waizhen" (Frontier Town of Juyong), while the western gate displays "Beimen Suoyue" (Key to the Northern Gate). North of the fortress stretches the 12-tower Northern Wall section, while to the south lies the less crowded Southern Wall with 7 watchtowers. If time permits, we recommend exploring the Southern Wall first before tackling the more popular Northern section. ▲Walk Through Six Centuries of Golden History: A Visual Feast of Vermilion Foliage Blanketing the Great Wall ▲ As night descends, the Badaling Great Wall transforms into a gilded dragon winding through shadowed peaks, its illuminated battlements whispering tales of millennia - where imperial splendor meets enduring mystery beneath constellations of golden light. ▲Cloaked in winter's crystalline mantle, the Badaling Great Wall becomes a silver serpent coiled between snow-draped peaks, its ancient stones gilded by dawn's golden raysBeijing · 60.2km from downtown

Prince Kung's Palace Museum

Prince Gong's Mansion, located on the shore of Shichahai Lake, is one of the best-preserved Qing Dynasty princely mansions still standing in Beijing. Originally the residence of Heshen, a powerful minister during the Qianlong reign, it was later bestowed upon Prince Qing, Yonglin, after Heshen's downfall. During the Xianfeng reign, it was transferred to Prince Gong, Yixin, hence the name "Prince Gong's Mansion." This mansion witnessed the entire process of the Qing Dynasty's rise and fall, leading to the saying, "One Prince Gong's Mansion, half the history of the Qing Dynasty." The mansion's front section is the residence, while the rear section is a garden. Both the mansion and the garden extend along three main roads—central, eastern, and western—creating a well-ordered and magnificent structure. The mansion is composed of multiple courtyards connected along an axis: the central Yin'an Hall, covered with green glazed tiles, is of the standard for a prince's main hall; the two courtyards of Ledao Hall and Duofu Pavilion in the east were once the residences of Heshen's son, Fengshen Yinde, and Princess Guren Hexiao, with Ledao Hall later serving as Prince Gong's living quarters; the west wing is small and exquisite, with Xijinzhai being particularly eye-catching, its partitions made entirely of beautifully carved nanmu wood, its layout modeled after the Ningshou Palace in the Forbidden City, this over-standard construction was later listed as one of Heshen's crimes. At the far end of the mansion stands a two-story building, commonly known as "Ninety-Nine and a Half Rooms," with a row of uniquely shaped windows on its back wall, said to have been the place where treasures were hidden, and also the boundary between the mansion and the garden. The garden, named Cuijin Garden, was rebuilt by craftsmen commissioned by Prince Gong, blending the charm of Jiangnan gardens with the architectural style of northern China. The garden's three wonders are the Western-style gate carved from white marble, the "Fu" (福, meaning good fortune) character stele inscribed by Emperor Kangxi, and the all-wooden opera stage. The "Fu" character stele, hidden in the Secret Cloud Cave of the artificial hill, subtly conveys wishes for many children, abundant land, great talent, long life, and abundant blessings; its location is so discreet that it's easy to miss. The opera stage is a closed, all-wood building, said to be able to project lyrics throughout the entire venue without amplification. The entire garden is themed around "Fu," with bat ponds, bat halls, and colorful bat paintings on the beams creating a charming atmosphere. Climbing to the Inviting Moon Terrace offers a panoramic view of the garden, and the Flowing Cup Pavilion still retains the elegant atmosphere of the ancient flowing water banquet. When visiting, you may want to first walk along the central axis to see the mansion, and then enter the garden through the Western-style gate to appreciate the garden in detail; there are more visitors during holidays, so it is advisable to set off early and allow enough time to slowly savor the history and details of this mansion.Beijing · 4.1km from downtown

Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing, the Summer Palace is a Unesco World Heritage site that used to be the palace and garden of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. It is the largest and most well preserved royal park in China. Construction of the palace began in 1750 and it served as a residential and entertainment area for the royal members. The palace underwent two major reconstructions after suffering damages during invasions by the Anglo-French Allied Forces and the Eight-Power Allied Forces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Summer Palace can be divided into three sectors: a political activity area centered at the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity; an empress living area concentrated around the Hall of Jade Billows and Hall of Joy and Longevity; and a tour route concentrated along the long corridor, rear hill, and the west sector.Beijing · 15.4km from downtown

Mutianyu Great Wall

8.3
4.8/5
36.6k reviews
Located in the Yanshan Mountains of Huairou District, Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best-preserved and most scenic sections of the Ming Great Wall, renowned as "the most beautiful section of the Great Wall." Its construction can be traced back to the Northern Qi Great Wall. In the early Ming Dynasty, General Xu Da oversaw its reconstruction on the site of the Northern Qi ruins. The Mutianyu Pass was established in 1404 (the second year of the Yongle reign). During the Longqing reign, it underwent further repairs under the supervision of Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang. The brick and stone walls and watchtowers seen today are mostly Ming Dynasty structures. Along the Ming Great Wall defense line, this section connects Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou Pass in the east, historically serving as a crucial military stronghold protecting the capital. This section of the Great Wall has a distinctive architectural style: three watchtowers stand side by side at the main gate, with the gate not located in the center but on the east side of the gate tower—a rare feature in Great Wall construction. The wall has crenellations on both sides, unlike most sections which only defend the outer side, reflecting the defensive considerations of defending from two sides. From the easternmost high point, the corner tower, to the main gate, watchtowers stand in succession within a few hundred meters, creating a considerable density. Standing atop the corner tower, one can enjoy panoramic views of the wall winding along the mountainside, with verdant peaks stretching as far as the eye can see. It offers a wide-open vista for sightseeing and photography, and the movie "If You Are the One 2" was also filmed here. This area boasts over 90% forest coverage, offering lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant red leaves in late autumn, and a pristine white landscape after winter snowfall—each season its own unique charm. You can ascend by cable car or ropeway, and descend via an open-air toboggan run through the forest, a fun and effortless way to do so. Compared to other open sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, the flow of visitors here is relatively relaxed. It's recommended to set aside half a day to stroll leisurely among the watchtowers, enjoying different perspectives of the wall and surrounding mountains from various vantage points.Beijing · 60.2km from downtown

The Kangxi Emperor's inscribed fu stele is particularly renowned, drawing travelers to queue for hours just to catch a glimpse. If interested, you can also detour to Yandai Byway to visit the Great Qing Post Office, which marks the birth of modern postal service in China. You can stamp a few beautifully patterned postmarks as souvenirs at the post office, though you'll need to purchase their postcards first to get the stamps. Rock singer Dou Wei performed at the Shichahai Scenic Area for three years, and it is said that the restaurant Qingyunlou (Shichahai branch) in the Shichahai Scenic Area is now owned by him. Other famous bars include Hutong Sketch and Jiadingfang. Sitting in a bar, watching singers perform, you can almost hear the passion for music from the "Beijing drifters" in their songs. Nearby attractions Shichahai Scenic Area is adjacent to Nanluoguxiang to the east and Beihai Park to the south, with Jingshan Park, the Palace Museum, and Tiananmen Square a bit further south also within easy reach. No rushing around, no hard selling, just pure, practical information. Excellent headset sound quality, and a non-stop 3-hour session. The Forbidden City is so vast; exploring it on your own would be a waste. Professor Fan will guide you through its entire 600-year history—definitely worth it!

Not crowded at all, the cable car ride only took 2 minutes to reach the South Fourth Floor, and I even caught a sunset. I walked down to the South First Floor, then back up to the North Fourth Floor, taking my time. The cable car took off at 5:40 PM and I arrived back at the North First Floor at 8:20 PM. Not bad!

The park has advanced and fun facilities, a beautiful environment, and plenty of public restrooms and trash cans. There are self-service water dispensers next to each restroom. Most of the rides require queuing, especially the popular big rides. The smaller rides are less crowded and the queues are not long. I recommend bringing some snacks. The park is mostly frequented by young people in their 20s. The rides are very exciting and suitable for young people. You can easily spend a whole day there.

Guide Wang was adept at creating a lively and engaging atmosphere during the tour of Prince Gong's Mansion. His explanations were vivid and interesting, and the occasional anecdotes were perfectly placed without feeling forced. He covered all the necessary information, balancing content with entertainment, resulting in a very positive experience.

The scent of the cedars was very calming in juxtaposition to the hustle and bustle of Beijing.

Five-star recommendation for Mutianyu Great Wall! If you're visiting the Great Wall in Beijing, this is the top choice. The tourist density is moderate, so you don't have to constantly dodge crowds, making the experience much better. The Ming Dynasty Great Wall is remarkably well-preserved. The unique double-sided crenellations and the three watchtowers at Zhengguantai are particularly noteworthy. Climbing to the top offers panoramic views of the rolling mountains and the magnificent landscape, immersing you in a rich historical atmosphere. The scenic area has excellent facilities, with cable cars, ropeways, and toboggan runs as options. It's friendly to seniors and families with children. If you don't want to hike the entire way, you can take the cable car directly to the middle section and leisurely explore the watchtowers. A few tips: Prices on the mountain are relatively high, so it's recommended to bring your own water and snacks; the steps vary in steepness, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes; during peak season, the toboggan runs can have long queues, so allow plenty of time. Strolling along the ancient wall and experiencing the grandeur of the Great Wall is a truly worthwhile trip.

Well, the place is perfect for families and kids. You can enjoy it by collecting some points and toys but for adults not that okay.

The largest urban park within Beijing's Fourth Ring Road, it's free and incredibly welcoming. With its vast lawns, expansive lake, and stunning European-style architecture and fairytale castle, it's perfect for photos. You can run, boat, take your kids, and visit exhibitions. It's comfortable year-round, and locals often come here to relax.

Shichahai (Qianhai + Houhai + Xihai), located at No. 49 Di'anmen West Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, is divided into three water areas: Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai. The lakeside scenic area is free all day and requires no reservation. Three main areas: 1) Qianhai (Lively main scenic area, the top choice for watching the sunset) Yandai Xiejie: A 232-meter-long century-old street with creative shops and snacks, leading directly to Yinding Bridge. Yinding Bridge: One of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Yanjing," Yinding Guanshan (Viewing the Mountains from Yinding Bridge), a good spot for sunset photography at Orange Sea in the evening, offering distant views of the Western Hills. Lotus Market: A pond full of lotus flowers in summer, offering opportunities for rowing boats and sightseeing boats. 2) Houhai (Bars + Hutongs, the heart of nightlife) Houhai Bar Street: A cluster of folk music bars, creating a vibrant atmosphere at night; avoid the expensive bars along the street and explore the deeper hutongs for better deals. Houhai North Bank: A quiet lakeside walking path, less crowded, suitable for strolling and taking photos, passing by Prince Chun's Mansion (the birthplace of Puyi). 3) Xihai (a local favorite, the least crowded) Xihai Wetland Park (free): reeds, wild ducks, lakeside boardwalk, a hidden gem in the bustling city, almost no tour groups, perfect for a quiet city walk.
