The location of Loop on Leith strikes a near-perfect balance.
Although the hotel sits close to the lively Lebuh Chulia, it is cleverly tucked away along Leith Street. Chulia Street is a hub for backpackers and nightlife, so evenings can get noisy. By setting itself slightly inward, Loop on Leith neatly avoids the brunt of street noise, while still placing you just a four-minute walk from the iconic Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion), where you can easily begin your street food adventure.
Its positioning works as an ideal base for urban exploration. Head north and you’ll find the refined charm of the heritage district; head south and you step straight into the vibrant pulse of the city center.
The hotel embraces an Urban Chic concept, deliberately doing away with traditional heavy carpeting—a smart choice in a tropical climate, as it helps reduce mustiness and allergens. Instead, modern hard flooring and bright lighting create a space that feels noticeably fresher and cleaner, both visually and physically, compared to older Peranakan-style hotels in the same price range.
Rooms here tend to be on the smaller side. For two guests traveling with large luggage, the space can feel a bit tight. It’s best suited for travelers who spend most of their day বাইরে exploring and simply want a comfortable place to rest at night—think light packers or efficiency-focused “urban explorers.”
At roughly RM250 per night, Loop on Leith delivers a boutique-like aesthetic and standardized service at a budget hotel price point. The value-for-money and overall sense of comfort are impressive.
It lacks the heavy, sometimes oppressive atmosphere of heritage buildings, and also avoids the blandness of chain hotels. This makes it especially appealing to young couples, solo travelers, or business visitors.
If you’re looking for a spacious executive suite, this may not be the right choice. But if your priorities are efficiency, cleanliness, and stepping straight into great food and scenery the moment you walk out, it stands out as a smart option in George Town’s mid-range market.
For an even better stay, consider requesting a higher-floor room—it offers a slightly more open view and helps buffer early morning street noise from passing motorcycles.
The room is spacious, and Harun always does an excellent job cleaning it; his service is enthusiastic.
Facilities: Good.
Service: Very good, though it's a shame they don't allow a slightly later checkout 😂. They require checkout at 11 AM, and by 12 PM, they were already calling us to hurry up and leave. They're quite strict about not allowing late check-outs, probably because rooms are in high demand during peak season.
Environment: Very quiet, you can't hear any motorbike noise, and it's convenient for getting to all the attractions.
The hotel's facilities are a bit dated. The cabinets, doors, and bathroom counter in the room all show their age, and there's no magnifying mirror at the vanity. This likely relates to when it was last renovated; it's not very stylish, but it is clean, which is good.
The service, however, is excellent, meeting five-star hotel standards without a doubt. They provide disposables, complimentary bottled water, welcome fruits, a breakfast buffet, and executive lounge access (depending on room type). The restaurant's decor has also been updated.
I had a great experience with one particular staff member. I had booked an executive room, and upon check-in, the front desk assigned me a connecting room without informing me. The soundproofing was terrible; I could clearly hear people showering and talking in the next room, which severely disrupted my sleep. After I explained the situation to the front desk, they worked hard to switch me to another room of the same type, which was much better and very comfortable. I'd like to especially commend Hanz at the front desk for their prompt action in changing my room, which allowed me to get a good night's sleep.
Regarding the location, just across the road is Shangri-La's Jen hotel. Its decor and facilities visibly appear newer and better. However, it's much lower in height and doesn't offer the good views this hotel does. If you're looking for a sea view room, this hotel is worth it. If views aren't a priority, you might want to compare the two.
This hotel is about 1km from many attractions in the old town, including Jay Chou's favorite restaurant, the street art murals, Kimberley Street Food Night Market, and Chew Jetty. These are all pleasant to explore in the evening. It's too hot at midday, so I'd recommend taking a taxi or staying at the hotel.
I just wanna say huge thanks to the fo during cny 17/2 we checkin, forgot her name but shes malay wearing scarf bawal a little bit tembam and cute! She was so kind and patient to arrange our request for birthday deco in our room, she apologized for not noticing my notes on the booking but its okay! Love the ambience of the hotel! Overall it was very nice! Will repeat on staying here next time!
Pros:
1/ Excellent location, very convenient for walking to nearby food streets and attractions.
2/ Very clean, and the service staff were very considerate with details.
3/ Plenty of hangers and hooks in the room, which I really liked.
The toilet has toilet paper, but if you're used to high-end hotels, it's best to bring sturdy facial tissues. The automatic soap dispenser was basically out of order, so I used my own travel shower gel as hand soap. There's a water heater switch next to the air conditioner by the entrance; you need to press it to get hot water for showering.
4/ Hallway soundproofing is decent, and guests are quite considerate. Everyone puts their drinks in the public refrigerator's designated numbered compartments and doesn't just take things randomly.
5/ Grab (ride-hailing app) navigation is very accurate; it's right around the corner from the Georgetown Hotel.
6/ The 100 MYR cash deposit is quickly and efficiently returned upon check-out.
7/ If you want daily room cleaning, be sure to inform the front desk staff before you leave each day. They are very polite and will certainly accommodate your request.
Areas for improvement:
1/ The table in the room is a thin wooden board that easily tips over. It would be better to replace it with a sturdy fixed wooden table, suitable for business travelers using laptops or for sitting down to enjoy snacks or sushi.
2/ The toilet paper is too thin; it leaves paper bits on your hands when you try to dry them after washing.
We had a good stay at Flamingo Hotel by The Beach Penang. The hotel is very beautiful, and the room was spacious and clean. The breakfast was also good. All the staff were nice except for one person named mr Li. He was not friendly during check-in, and I happened to meet the same person again during check-out. He looked very bossy, double standard and unfriendly. I would recommend sending him for hospitality training, especially for front office service. Other than that, everything was good and we had a pleasant stay there….
Thank you Mercure Beach Hotel for making my request come true and giving my child a birthday surprise this year.
The hotel has a really beautiful sea view.
The beach is well maintained even though it’s not that big. The room is clean and honestly, the pillows are the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on.
Even though it’s close to the main road, the room is well soundproofed. Only downside, the water pressure is a bit low.
The soap & shampoo are Made in Italy and smell really nice.
I was quite surprised with the breakfast menu, this is my first time seeing a hotel serve spaghetti, and I forgot the name of the beef dish (the one in the picture), but it was really good!
The food was nicely seasoned, not too salty.
There’s also quite a good variety of food and drinks.
Definitely will repeat again one day 👍
This hotel is truly excellent!!! Much better than expected!!!! Check-in and check-out were both self-service, which was very convenient. The hotel environment is great! It's cool inside, clean, and hygienic. The little decorations inside are also lovely, with couplets, calligraphy experiences, and a felt board where you can leave messages. I saw so many interesting comments. The room type I booked was perfect for two people. Both air conditioning and a fan were provided, and all the facilities were complete and easy to use. Breakfast was also served in the morning. There was coffee, black tea, toast, and even strawberry jam and butter~ The open kitchen had a water dispenser, a toaster, and I even saw a juicer. The ice water from the dispenser was super delicious, and hot water was also available. There was also a laundry room, but I didn't go up to see it. The living environment was very quiet, and they even provided earplugs. The hotel staff, Ma Ni, was also amazing!!! Very enthusiastic, always smiling when she saw me~ (The room was exactly as described by the hotel, no false advertising at all~ I just forgot to take pictures of my room). Everyone doesn't need to worry about language issues; upon arrival, just scan the QR code in the middle above the main door to add the owner on WeChat. Chinese communication is perfectly fine! Then the owner will send you the main door password and your room password, which is super convenient!!! All in all, I highly recommend this hotel, everyone can confidently go for it!!!!!!! I will definitely come again~ A very wonderful stay ❤️❤️❤️
Exceptional spot near the edge of main Penang city with a view of both the city as well as the water front. This hotel delivered and exceeded expectations on many levels. Enjoyed walking to nearby food areas and restaurants that offer the best of local Malaysian food (recommend to try as much Laksa as possible) along with shopping spots ideal for ample gift gathering and souvenir hunting.
The hotel itself deserves great credit for being spotless clean, hosting comfortable (and modern looking) rooms along with a relaxing courtyard and hangout spots on each floor where guests can sit between adventures and fill up their water bottles from the free of charge water filters. I also must say the color schemes used in the room and throughout the hotel contributed to the overall good vibes felt during the stay.
A smaller but equally important amenity was the easy to use laundry room that allowed guests like me to reset their luggage conditions for the next adventures ahead. I enjoyed the glamour pool inside the hotel and also marveled at the views from all through the hotel windows. Staff was very friendly as well and hoped to validate parking (another added benefit). Would definitely come back here again.
Lots of great things to say here. After spending a good amount of time in the main city Penang, this hotel in Batu Feringghi was a well deserved and almost dream-like escape that provided my lovely companion and I not only a chance to reset but it gave us the most romantic beach experience in all of Malaysia.
The hotel itself is nestled on a clifftop overlooking the wonderful and vibrant Malaysian beach and is walking distance not only to great restaurants and shops but also to many beach and water activities. I highly recommend having a dinner on the beach and watching the fire show before retreating back to the comfort of this hotel.
The hotel campus is nicely laid out with a gleaming downstairs entrance area that made us feel like we were in comfortable luxury from the first moment there. Our views from the room were spectacular and the room itself was quiet and peaceful. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and the on site amenities (spa and pool) were all above and beyond all our expectations. This was a perfect getaway trip and an excellent chance to see another side of beautiful Penang.
