The hotel's location is excellent! 👍 The service attitude is great, facilities are complete, and transportation is convenient. Especially, there's a fantastic Malay restaurant (Restoran Nikmat 2) right behind it – highly recommended! After 11 PM, the hot water supply wasn't quite sufficient, only lukewarm. Also, there was a sewer odor in the bathroom. Hope these minor issues can be improved upon.

Since my flight arrived in Kota Kinabalu at 1 AM, I chose a hotel close to the airport. This one is about 5km away, which isn't too far. Regarding the hotel facilities, there were pros and cons. The room was spacious, and the air conditioning worked well. The price was fair for the environment. However, the bathroom was a letdown. The shower had no hot water, so I had no choice but to take a cold shower. They only provided small bottles of shower gel and shampoo, which felt a bit stingy. The sink also had no hot water, and I'm not sure if the water heater was broken. I didn't bother calling the front desk to complain, as I was just too exhausted.

We had a lovely stay at The Luma Hotel. I instantly fell in live with their interior the moment I saw it on social media, more so when we got to experience staying in it. Apart from their impeccably well-thought of interior design, I also appreciate how accommodating their staffs were as well as how convenient the location of the hotel. Would definitely come back once I visit Kota Kinabalu

The hotel is in a good downtown location, close to Gaya Street, nearby jetties, and malls. The sunset views from the rooftop are also beautiful. For breakfast, I recommend trying items from the à la carte menu (which are free) – they're quite good. The buffet items, however, were pretty standard. The hotel is generally new but the pool is a bit small. For rooms, try to get a higher floor as lower floors have obstructed views. Overall, if you're looking for value for money, it's pretty average, but if that's not a concern, I'd recommend it. 🥸

This is my third stay, I had a free upgrade room to Deluxe room, that was really great. For the first two times, I was talking about feeling too cold after shower as cold air from the room will be going into the bathroom through the airventilated door. This time, the room is too warm, the temperature inside the bathroom after shower is just nice, but too warm to sleep at night, covering the quilt makes me too warm, without it would be too cold. Told the receptionist couple of times and they said maintenance had tried to turn it on to the max but the speed was still slow. However, I have a friend staying for the same night in different room, the fan speed of the air-conditioning in his room was really strong. I guess there's something wrong with the air-conditioning in my room. Other than that, everything's great.

I expected a great hotel stay and they delivered. All the staff were lovely. Thank you for that. My only issue is the lack of room information regarding what is available in the hotel. Normally I would expect marketing information and menus for restarunt and bar in the room. The TV does give room service menu but was not required. Fortunately we found Ben, the Concierge in the lobby who very kindly explained what we asked, and provided a map for the area. Very welcome. Thank you very much.

This is a great hotel located near the city center and very convenient for the airport. The facilities are excellent, with everything you need, including a swimming pool and fitness center. It's a good option for a quick overnight stay if you arrive late at night, though the breakfast is just okay. The front desk staff were fairly friendly. The scent in the elevator was a bit odd, though.

TTiger0910The lobby is tall but small, and the rooms are a bit dated and crowded, which are minor drawbacks. However, the overall advantages are significant. The stunning beach sunset views and authentic Shang Palace cuisine are both excellent. The service is truly wonderful, and they even offer Chinese-speaking staff. When in Kota Kinabalu, you really need to stay at the Shangri-La for a few days to fully appreciate it and overlook those small imperfections. The romantic SSB beach bar is also a must-visit.

AAnonymous UserJust got back home yesterday, and I'm determined to write a thorough review for this hotel. My kids also encouraged me to review it, because it truly deserves it. We booked four ocean villas for two nights, and I initially thought our chances of encountering issues would be higher with such a large booking. But we didn't run into any problems at all! In fact, I even regretted not booking more nights, mainly because I was put off by too many negative reviews on Ctrip. 1. **Service:** If you're comfortable communicating in English, the hotel service is absolutely fantastic. Most of the staff speak excellent English and were diligent in explaining activities, facilities, schedules, and programs. They showed us where everything was in the room and proactively informed us about the cost if we broke any of the toiletries bottles. The higher cost for broken bottles is because the contents are genuinely expensive – they're pure plant essential oil toiletries. As someone who regularly uses essential oils, I know they shouldn't be stored in plastic. Plus, these toiletries left our hair and skin feeling moisturized, not dry. I found them to be very effective. If you're worried about breaking them, just place them on the floor. 2. **Seawater:** The seawater is quite clear. While it's not a 'jelly blue,' the clarity is definitely good. We did experience a heavy downpour one day, and the water became a bit murky the next, but it was still perfectly acceptable. The photo of the large sea turtle looks a bit blurry because it was taken with a waterproof phone case, but the water itself was actually very clear. That was taken from under our water villa. The manta ray was photographed near the stairs of our water villa room. 3. **No Outside Food Policy:** They don't allow outside food in the rooms because it attracts ants and monkeys. The front desk has a dedicated area for storing snacks. We didn't bring any snacks into our room and always closed the door promptly, so we didn't have any bugs or insects. A crucial point: absolutely do not feed the monkeys! 4. **Meals:** We had all our meals at the hotel restaurant, and the food was truly delicious. A main meal costs around 90+ MYR per person (about 160 CNY). We felt the food was excellent, with a good variety of dishes and drinks beyond just the main courses. The kids' portions were a bit small; our four children ordered 7 kids' meals, and eventually, we just ordered them regular adult meals instead. 5. **Hot Water:** Regarding previous reviews mentioning no hot water, one of our rooms indeed had this issue. We called the front desk, and it turned out there's a 'water heater' button on the wall. Hot water was available within 15 minutes. So, don't hesitate to ask! Don't be shy; good service often requires you to speak up. 6. **Free Rentals:** Paddleboards, small boats, fins, and masks are all available for free rental. 7. **Marine Life:** In the ocean, we spotted baby sharks, baby manta rays, triggerfish, archerfish (the ones that shoot water), porcupinefish, and even a large sea turtle (which is rare, but we got lucky!). 8. **Welcome/Farewell:** We received a welcome ceremony and a welcome drink upon arrival. Upon departure, we sometimes had the whole staff waving goodbye to us. 9. **Guest Demographics:** There were a lot of European and American guests at the hotel, some Koreans, but not many Chinese guests. I wonder if this is due to the excessive negative reviews on Ctrip. 10. **Cleanliness:** The hygiene was excellent, and the rooms were very clean. Each room came with life vests, so you could go snorkeling anytime. That pretty much covers it. I believe if your English communication is good, feel free to chat with the front desk and restaurant staff; they are very engaging. At 8 AM, the hotel organizes a free jungle trek. It was a bit tiring, and we didn't see much – just hiking uphill. For reference, my experience this trip, and with these four rooms, was genuinely excellent. Having been to places like the Maldives, Bali, and Koh Lipe... I think this hotel offers great value for money, and I would definitely come back. Hotels at this price point on Koh Lipe before were significantly worse.

GGuest UserThe room was very clean and spacious, quiet, and the air conditioning was nice and cool. The shower had great pressure. The front desk staff were very helpful; even though they didn't speak Chinese, check-in was smooth. The room was cleaned daily. The hotel's location is excellent, with many eateries downstairs, making it very convenient for seafood. If you're not looking for luxury, this hotel is definitely worth staying at. You need your room card to access the upper floors, which adds to the security.

XXianhuibabyI stayed for two consecutive nights. The first night, I could only book a twin room, and I have to say, the twin room was much larger than the king room. The hotel's location is very convenient, about a fifteen-minute taxi ride from the airport. For the price during Chinese New Year, this hotel offers great value for money given its location. The front desk gave us a souvenir when we checked in, and there's a 200 MYR deposit which is returned upon check-out. Honestly, the hotel elevator had a very strange smell...

11391817****To be fair, my overall stay experience this time was quite good. Pros: 1. Great environment: The natural surroundings of the water villa are beautiful. We booked a sunset room and got to see stunning sunsets every day. The water was also very clear, making snorkeling and fish-watching easy. 2. Excellent service: The staff at the water villa were all very enthusiastic and accommodating, even helping us take photos with the glass-bottom boat. We happened to be there for New Year's Eve, and the villa specially arranged extra meals, fireworks, and small souvenirs. It was very thoughtful and made my family very happy. 3. Delicious food: Four meals a day – breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea – kept us well-fed. Cons: The room facilities were outdated, and some things were broken, like the bathroom curtain and the showerhead. Additionally, the entire water villa, including the room balcony, is covered with wooden planks. Some of the wood isn't sanded smooth, making it easy to bump into, which is very unfriendly for children. You also have to be careful when walking.

JjoycelsJuly 2024 TL;DR: This place feels more like a meditation centre than a hotel, it will not provide you with supplements. It's a bare room. You need to bring toothbrush&paste and buy drinks somewhere as it is not provided. No tv and fan. No in-house restaurant. There are mosquitoes at the garden near afternoon, and the balcony at night, but there are no insects in the room (family room). In exchange you will get a very clear and vivid Mt Kinabalu view in the near-dawn morning (where there is no mosquito), a working shower with heater, concrete floor that reduces nearby noise, and cold foggy experience. Long: This place is within the fog path so you will get the foggy experience. You can also see Mt. Kinabalu at the right time and it looks quite close (e.g. dawn 6 a.m.). You can even see the electric towers and resthouse, it's that close. Moreover, this place is more like a meditation centre than a hotel. It is visibly run down probably since covid as that is also when the in-house restaurant got closed down. Considering my experience as a recurrent visitor of Kundasang, mosquito has always been the least of my concern. Somehow this place has lots of them. We got bit quite a lot in a short span of time. Undesirable / Cons: -No water kettle, no supplements (water bottle, coffee pack, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.). Porcelain mugs are provided though -No in-house cafe/restaurant but nearby has a few (400 meters at least) -No tv, no fan but cold in general -Quite a lot of mosquito and moths outside at the garden place in the afternoon and at the balcony connecting the 2 buildings at night. There are no electric zapper. -Seems a bit run down at the garden. 2 broken board pieces on the floor for example. -It has no Qibla for muslim people, at least in family room Desirable / Pros: -Big room. Not smelly -Is cement board floor -Big single beds. Not smelly -Clean bed. Fluffy cover. -Water heater is working for family room at least -Relatively clean inside room and at reception. No insects in room. No weird bugs around. -Has a table and chairs in room -Lots of electrical port -Wifi provided by hotel is strong (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz -Very near main road. So good road going towards the hotel -Aki-Aki trail starting point is nearby. Plan to go next time so no experience as of this review This place is not too bad. Not too good either. Personally, I wouldn't place this as my top place for the foggy and view considering other options but I don't mind returning if necessary. It will sure be much much better to highly recommended with much needed renovation and have some methods to deal with those mosquito. p.s. There's a cute puppy that invites you at the entrance. 😂 p.s.s. I saw a greater coucal gliding into the forest in the morning!

LLanlingwang0812Let's start with the positives: the location is incredibly convenient, within walking distance to various downtown attractions. The price was also reasonable, even during Chinese New Year, and the service was good. We stayed here for one night after an early morning flight, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The environment is comparable to a budget chain hotel in China, and it can be a bit noisy facing the street. It's also an older version, not the newer 3.0. So, it's a decent option if you're looking for value for money for a temporary one or two-night stay.

SSiniyansiTraveled with my bestie, and I booked this hotel specifically because I loved the look of the bathtub 🛁. First, the positives: The service was attentive, and there was even a Chinese butler, though most staff primarily spoke English. The environment was fantastic; the pool and beach loungers were clean and comfortable. In the afternoon, they'd restock snacks and drinks in our room, and we could choose what we wanted, which was a great touch. The sunsets were beautiful, but if you're serious about sunset photos, I'd recommend Tanjung Aru; it's more photogenic there. We originally booked the Garden Wing but got upgraded to the Ocean Wing. The Ocean Wing was quiet with fewer people, whereas the Garden Wing was much too crowded. For breakfast, I ate at the Ocean Wing on the first day. It was mainly à la carte with fewer options at the buffet. The second day, I tried the Garden Wing; it was packed with people, but they had more buffet variety. However, replenishment wasn't always timely, and the coffee machine was a bit slow to respond, taking ages to get going. The food and drinks at the Sampan Sunset Bar were a bit pricey, and the cocktails weren't particularly good. I'd recommend sticking to beer there, but the ambiance was amazing for photos. The bathtub wasn't perfectly clean, which I can understand since some small leaves tend to drift in. It's best to rinse it out yourself before using it. The 4 PM late check-out was incredibly thoughtful and convenient!!!!! They also provide shuttle service to the airport or city malls. Overall, the experience was great. The service and facilities are definitely worth the price.
