Jakarta MRT

Getting around Jakarta can feel challenging, especially during peak hours when the city's roads are busy with traffic.

For Singaporeans visiting Jakarta, the Jakarta MRT is one of the easiest ways to travel between popular areas such as South and Central Jakarta without getting stuck on the road.

If you are planning a Jakarta trip from Singapore, here is everything you need to know about the Jakarta MRT including routes, fares, and useful tips.

Jakarta MRT Overview

Jakarta MRT

Since beginning operations in March 2019, Jakarta MRT has become and important part of the city's public transport network. Its first operating route connects Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Bundaran HI in Central Jakarta, covering about 16 km and 13 stations.

The system is also becoming more convenient for international visitors. In July 2026, Jakarta introduced contactless Visa and Mastercard payment, allowing eligible contactless credit cards to be used for tap in and tap out without first purchasing a dedicated transport card.

Jakarta is a huge city, and travelling by car can take much longer when traffic is heavy. The MRT provides a much more predictable way to move between several popular neighbourhoods.

The current North South Line passes through areas such as Blok M, Senayan, Sudirman, Setiabudi and Bundaran HI, making it particularly useful for tourists staying around South or Central Jakarta.

Payment Methods of Jakarta MRT

Jakarta MRT Payment Methods

Payment is one of the biggest changes Singaporeans should know about before travelling.

Contactless Visa and Mastercard

Good news for Singaporean travellers. MRT Jakarta launched contactless EMV payment in July 2026, allowing passengers to use supported contactless Visa and Mastercard credit cards for tap in and tap out.

The system was officially launched at Bundaran HI Station on 29 July 2026. Eligible international visitors can use a contactless Visa or Mastercard without buying a separate transport card.

This is particularly convenient for Singaporeans who already use contactless bank cards for MRT journeys at home.

Indonesian Electronic Money Cards

MRT Jakarta also accepts several Indonesian bank issued electronic money cards, including:

  • Mandiri e Money
  • BCA Flazz
  • BNI TapCash
  • BRI Brizzi
  • Bank DKI JakCard

These cards are useful if you are using Jakarta's public transport frequently or combining MRT journeys with other transport services.

QR and Mobile Payment

QR based payment is another option through the MyMRTJ system and supported payment services.

However, some Indonesian e wallet services may require local account access or setup, so this option may be less convenient for Singaporean tourists than using a supported contactless bank card.

For a short holiday, carrying a contactless Visa or Mastercard plus some Indonesian Rupiah as a backup is a practical option.

💌Tip: Before travelling, make sure your card supports contactless payments and that overseas transactions are enabled by your bank.

How to Take the Jakarta MRT

Jakarta MRT Station

Taking the MRT is straightforward even if this is your first time in Jakarta.

Step 1: Find Your MRT Station

Look for the Jakarta MRT logo or check your map application for the nearest station. If you are staying in Central Jakarta, Bundaran HI, Dukuh Atas, Setiabudi and Bendungan Hilir are some of the most useful stations.

Step 2: Choose Your Payment Method

Use your supported contactless Visa or Mastercard, electronic money card or available QR payment option. Keep the same card with you throughout the journey.

Step 3: Tap In

Tap your card or payment device at the entrance and wait for the gate to open. Do not tap multiple cards at the same time, as you could accidentally charge the wrong card.

Step 4: Follow the Direction Signs

Check the platform signs carefully. The current line runs between Lebak Bulus and Bundaran HI, so choose the platform based on your destination.

Step 5: Tap Out

When you reach the destination, use the same payment card to tap out. Keeping the same card is especially important when using contactless payments method.

Jakarta MRT Phase 2: What's Coming Next

Jakarta is expanding its MRT network.

The North South Line Phase 2A is being developed from Bundaran HI towards Kota, adding approximately 6 km and seven stations. The wider Phase 2 project also includes Phase 2B towards Ancol Barat. MRT Jakarta's 2024 annual report listed April 2029 as the planned start of operations for Phase 2.

Construction is already visible around central Jakarta, including areas around Gajah Mada and Hayam Wuruk, where future MRT stations will serve Harmoni, Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar.

The expansion will eventually make it easier to travel between more of Jakarta's historic and central areas by rail.

Tips for Singaporeans Taking Jakarta MRT

Jakarta MRT

Keep your contactless card ready. The newly introduced Visa and Mastercard payment option can make short trips much easier, but make sure your card is enabled for overseas contactless payments.

Use the same card to tap in and tap out. Avoid switching between a physical card and mobile wallet during one journey.

Avoid weekday peak hours if possible. MRT Jakarta becomes busier during commuting periods, particularly around the morning and evening rush.

Keep your belongings close. As with any busy urban transport system, keep your phone, wallet and passport secure.

Check your station exit. Large MRT stations can have multiple exits leading to different streets and destinations. Choosing the right exit can save you a surprisingly long walk.

Carry some Indonesian Rupiah. Even if you mainly use contactless payment, having some cash as a backup is useful for food, small purchases and situations where your preferred payment method is unavailable.

Check operating updates before late night trips. Normal service generally ends around midnight, while special event schedules can differ.

Download your maps before leaving the hotel. Having your destination and station information available offline can be useful if your mobile connection becomes unreliable.

Is Jakarta MRT Worth Using

National Monument

Yes, especially if you are exploring the South and Central Jakarta.

The MRT is affordable, relatively easy to use and helps you avoid one of Jakarta's biggest travel challenges: road congestion. With the introduction of contactless Visa and Mastercard payment, it also has become more convenient for international travelers.

For a first trip, consider using the MRT to explore Blok M, Senayan, Istora, Dukuh Atas and Bundaran HI, then use ride hailing or taxis for places that are further away from the railway network.

As Jakarta continues expanding its MRT network towards Kota and other parts of the city, the system should become even more useful for tourists in the coming year.
