Desaru Travel Guide

Looking for a relaxing beach escape without flying? Desaru is one of my favourite types of weekend getaway from Singapore because you can go from busy city life to beaches, seafood, water parks and resort pools in just a few hours.

What I like about Desaru is that you do not have to plan every minute of your trip. You can spend one day running around at the water park, then slow things down with a seafood dinner and a beach walk the next day.

Whether you are planning a family holiday, romantic weekend or quick escape from Singapore, this Desaru travel guide covers how to get there, things to do, where to stay, what to eat, estimated costs and useful tips for Singapore travellers.

Why Visit Desaru?

Pantai Desaru

Located on the east coast of Johor, Desaru is best known for its long sandy beaches and laid-back coastal atmosphere. It also has the more developed Desaru Coast, where you will find luxury resorts, Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast, The Els Club, restaurants and plenty of outdoor activities.

Desaru is a good choice when you want a Johor getaway that feels different from a typical shopping trip to Johor Bahru.

Here are a few reasons to put it on your weekend list:

  • Easy to reach from Singapore by car or direct ferry
  • Long sandy beaches along the South China Sea
  • Family-friendly attractions including Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast
  • Luxury resorts and beachfront stays
  • Seafood restaurants and local food
  • Nature experiences such as mangrove cruises and fruit farm visits
  • Water sports, golf and outdoor activities
  • A slower, more relaxing atmosphere than central Johor Bahru
If you only have one weekend, I’d suggest 2D1N for a quick escape. For families or travellers who want to combine the beach, water park and nature activities, 3D2N gives you much more breathing room.

How to Get to Desaru from Singapore?

There are two main ways to travel from Singapore: drive or take the direct ferry.

Drive from Singapore to Desaru

Driving is one of the most convenient options if you want to explore different parts of Desaru.

The official Desaru Coast website estimates around 1.5 hours from Woodlands Checkpoint to Desaru Coast, although your actual journey can be considerably longer depending on immigration queues and traffic.

I’d suggest driving if you are travelling with family or a group because you can easily move between Desaru Beach, Desaru Coast, fruit farms, restaurants and other attractions without waiting for transfers.

Just remember that your total travel time from Singapore depends heavily on the traffic at the land checkpoints, especially during weekends, school holidays and long weekends.

🚨Tip: Check your vehicle documents, Malaysia entry requirements and road conditions before leaving Singapore.

Take the Singapore to Desaru Ferry

If you would rather skip the road journey, there is also a direct ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal operated by BatamFast.

As of the current schedule effective 17 September 2026, the ferry operates Thursday to Monday, departing Tanah Merah at 10:10am and departing Desaru Coast at 5:30pm. Additional sailings may be added during festive periods and long weekends.

💌My suggestion: If you are doing a simple resort getaway, the ferry can be a really nice way to start the holiday. But if you want to visit several attractions outside Desaru Coast, I would choose driving instead.

Best Things to Do and Explore in Desaru

Desaru is not just about sitting on the beach. You can easily fill a weekend with water parks, nature experiences, seafood, water sports and plenty of relaxing time.

Spend the Day at Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

If you are travelling with kids, Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast is one of the biggest attractions to add to your itinerary.

The water park has more than 20 wet and dry rides and attractions, including a large wave pool and the region's first water coaster.

You can easily spend most of the day here, so I would avoid squeezing too many other activities into the same afternoonn.

Best for: Families, groups and anyone who wants a fun-filled day

🚨Tip: Bring swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes. It is also worth checking the latest opening hours and ticket information before visiting.

Relax at Desaru Beach

Desaru Beach

Of course, you cannot visit Desaru without spending some time by the sea.

Desaru Beach stretches along the South China Sea and is a popular place for relaxing, taking photos and enjoying the coastal scenery. Tourism Malaysia also highlights the beach for activities such as water sports, while noting that sea conditions can become rougher during the Northeast Monsoon.

If you ask me, this is where you should slow down. Grab a drink, find a shady spot and simply enjoy the sea breeze instead of trying to tick off another attraction.

Best for: Couples, families and a relaxing afternoo

Explore Desaru Fruit Farm

Desaru Fruit Farm

For something different from beaches and resorts, add Desaru Fruit Farm to your trip.

You can learn more about local tropical fruits and agriculture, with experiences that can include fruit-related activities and farm visits. Desaru Coast also lists the fruit farm among its nature and agro experiences.

I’d especially recommend this if you are travelling with children because it gives them something different to do after spending time at the beach or water park.

Best for: Families and travellers who enjoy nature and local experiences

Play Golf at The Els Club Desaru Coast

The Els Club Desaru Coast - Ocean Course

Golfers can also add The Els Club Desaru Coast to their trip.

The club has two courses: the 27-hole Ocean Course, designed by Ernie Els, and the 18-hole Valley Course, designed in collaboration with Vijay Singh.

Even if golf is not your thing, Desaru Coast has plenty of other activities, so you can split up for the day if you are travelling with friends or family.

Go on a Mangrove or Firefly Cruise

Desaru has plenty of nature experiences beyond the coastline.

The Lebam River Cruise takes visitors through mangrove areas where you may spot birds and other wildlife. There are also kayaking experiences along the Lebam River.

For an evening activity, you can also look into a firefly cruise, which combines a seafood meal with a night-time river experience.

Best for: Couples, families and nature lovers

Try Water Sports and Outdoor Activities

If sitting on the beach for two hours already sounds boring to you, Desaru has plenty of activities to keep you busy.

Depending on the operator and conditions, activities around Desaru can include:

  • Kayaking
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Jet skiing
  • Banana boat rides
  • Cycling
  • Fishing
  • Surfing
  • Other beach and water activities

Desaru Coast also offers outdoor experiences such as cycling, watersports and coastal activities.

Where to Eat inDesaru: Local Food and Seafood Guide

Desaru Travel Guide

One of the things I would definitely make time for in Desaru is seafood.

The area has everything from casual local eateries and seafood restaurants to resort dining. If you are staying at Desaru Coast, you can also choose from restaurants across the resorts and leisure areas.

Area

What to expect

Desaru town and surrounding areas

Local food and seafood restaurants

Desaru Beach area

Casual eateries and seafood

Desaru Coast

Resort restaurants, cafes and international dining

Bandar Penawar

Local Malaysian food and casual restaurants

If you are staying at one of the resorts, I’d suggest having at least one meal outside the resort too. You get to experience a different side of Desaru and may find more local-style dishes at a lower price.

What to Eat in Desaru

Depending on where you dine, look out for fresh seafood, grilled fish, prawns, crab, squid, local Malay dishes, fried rice and noodles, tropical fruits and local desserts or drinks.

🚨Tip: Seafood prices can depend on the day's catch, size and weight, so check the price before ordering.

Where to Stay in Desaru

Hotel Exterior

There are plenty of Desaru hotels and resorts, ranging from large beachfront resorts to more affordable stays outside Desaru Coast.

Desaru Coast

If you want a proper resort holiday, staying around Desaru Coast is the easiest option.

The area currently includes Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast, Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, The Westin Desaru Coast Resort and Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast.

Best for: Families, couples and travellers looking for a resort getaway

Around Desaru Beach

Staying near Desaru Beach can be a better option if you want easier access to the public beach and local restaurants.

Best for: Travellers who want a more relaxed and potentially more budget-friendly stay

Bandar Penawar

Bandar Penawar is useful if you prefer staying outside the main resort area and want access to local food and everyday amenities.

Best for: Budget-conscious travellers and road-trippers

💌Tip: Hotel prices can vary considerably between weekdays, weekends and school holidays. Compare different dates before booking, especially if you are travelling with a family.

How Many Days Do You Need in Desaru?

1 Day in Desaru

A day trip works if you mainly want to visit the beach, enjoy a meal or spend the day at one major attraction.

However, if you are travelling from Singapore, remember to factor in the border crossing or ferry schedule.

2 Days in Desaru

2D1N is what I would suggest for a first quick getaway.

You could spend Day 1 travelling to Desaru and enjoying the beach or water park, then have a relaxed dinner before checking into your hotel.

On Day 2, have breakfast, explore a nearby attraction such as the fruit farm or a nature activity, then head back to Singapore.

3 Days in Desaru

If you have more time, 3D2N is much more comfortable. You can combine:

Day 1: Travel + beach + seafood dinner
Day 2: Water park or outdoor activities
Day 3: Fruit farm / nature activity + lunch + return to Singapore

I’d choose 3D2N if you are travelling with children because there is less pressure to rush from one attraction to another.

Desaru Travel Tips for Singaporeans

Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

A little planning can make your Desaru getaway much smoother.

  1. Decide between driving and ferry early. Driving gives you more flexibility, while the direct ferry is convenient if you are mainly staying around Desaru Coast.
  2. Allow extra time for the Singapore-Malaysia border. Weekend and holiday traffic can make your journey much longer than the usual driving time.
  3. Keep some Malaysian Ringgit with you. Cards and e-wallets are useful, but cash can still come in handy at smaller eateries, stalls and local businesses.
  4. Do not overpack your itinerary. Desaru is a place where you can actually enjoy having a slower afternoon. I’d rather leave some free time for the beach than rush through five attractions.
  5. Check the sea conditions. Weather and monsoon conditions can affect beach and water activities. Tourism Malaysia notes that the sea can be rougher during the November to February period.
  6. Book popular hotels early. Resort prices and availability can change quickly during weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
  7. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You will probably spend plenty of time outdoors, especially if your itinerary includes the beach, water park or fruit farm.
  8. Check ferry timings carefully. The current direct ferry schedule operates Thursday to Monday, and the operator states that schedules can change without notice.
  9. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. You will likely spend plenty of time outdoors, particularly if you are joining nature or evening activities.
  10. Leave some room for food. Seriously, don’t plan every meal around the resort. I’d suggest trying at least one local seafood meal during your trip.

Is Desaru Worth Visiting?

Hotel Exterior

Definitely consider it if you want a beach-focused Johor getaway without flying.

What makes Desaru interesting is that you can make the trip whatever you want it to be. Want a fun family holiday? Spend the day at Adventure Waterpark. Want a romantic weekend? Book a beachfront resort and enjoy a slow dinner by the coast. Want something more adventurous? Try watersports, cycling or a nature experience.

And if you ask me, the best Desaru trip is not about squeezing everything into one itinerary. Pick two or three things you genuinely want to do, leave some time for the beach and good food, and enjoy the slower pace.
