Reviews: Carnival Splendor

RAJMEH2026-09-08

I recently sailed on the 4-day, 3-night ocean voyage aboard the Carnival Splendor out of Sydney, and it exceeded all expectations! Even though it was a short cruise, it felt like a complete, rejuvenating holiday from the moment we stepped on board. The Carnival Splendor is vibrant, impeccably clean, and full of energy. As a "Fun Ship," it lives up to its name—there’s an incredible buzz throughout the vessel that suits travelers of all ages. The food options were fantastic. Whether we were grabbing a quick, delicious bite at Guy’s Burger Joint, enjoying the casual buffet, or sitting down for a wonderful multi-course dinner in the main dining room, the quality and flavor were top-notch. For a short itinerary, the ship packed in an amazing variety of things to do. From production shows and live music to trivia and relaxing by the pool on the lido deck, there was never a dull moment.

This was my first time booking a cruise trip using TripAdvisor; I had previously used other cruise OTAs. I saw a great deal on a cruise from Seattle to Tokyo's Royal Princess from September 19th to October 4th, 2026, offered by TripAdvisor. The process was very smooth, and they provided professional advice. The entire trip went smoothly. If I have any similar trips that interest me, I will definitely choose TripAdvisor first.

The Ultimate Cruises is indeed excellent, with facilities and dining options surpassing those of other cruise ships. The only drawback is the poor organization of shore excursions. Our three excursions were either rushed and disorganized, forcing us to cut important itineraries, or we were asked to depart as early as 7 AM, only to find ourselves with nothing to do by 1 PM, spending the entire afternoon back on the ship. This aspect needs improvement.

Sydney Must-see Attractions

Sydney is a vibrant city renowned for its iconic Sydney Opera House, diverse wildlife at Taronga Zoo, the bustling Circular Quay, the aquatic wonders of SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, and the entertainment-rich Darling Harbour, each offering unique experiences and cultural significance.

Sydney Food Guide

Sydney's food scene is renowned for its distinctive offerings like the celebrated Sydney Rock Oyster, known for its unique flavor profile and significant contribution to the local economy, and kangaroo meat, which is both a sustainable and nutritious option, though it faces cultural hesitancy among some Australians.

Sydney Transportation

Sydney, a major global hub, is accessible by air, train, bus, or sea, with efficient connections to its city center. By Air  Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), 8 km (5 miles) south of the city, is Australia’s main gateway, serving domestic and international airlines. Direct flights connect from North America, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific.  To City Center: - Airport Link Train: Fastest option to Central Station or Circular Quay. Runs frequently between 5:00 AM and 12:30 AM. Pay via Opal card or contactless payment (debit/credit card). - Taxis/Ride-Hailing: Taxi ranks are located at the front of all terminals. For ride-shares, arrange with the driver to meet at a designated pick-up area. Expect to pay between $45 and $55 AUD.  - Public Bus: Sydney Airport is served by several bus routes. Route 350 connects the Domestic Terminal to Bondi Junction via Mascot, Maroubra, and Coogee. Route 420 links Burwood to Mascot Station, serving both terminals. The late-night Route N20 runs between Riverwood and the City via the International Terminal.  By Train Central Station connects Sydney with other hubs like Melbourne and Brisbane. Train travel is affordable but slow.  By Bus Greyhound and Firefly Express serve routes from Melbourne or Canberra to Central Station. By Ferry/Cruise Sydney’s Port of Circular Quay or White Bay receives cruise ships from New Zealand and some Pacific islands.

Sydney Where to Stay

Sydney is a vibrant city with a diverse range of accommodation options spread across its iconic neighborhoods. The city's lodging is concentrated in key areas, each offering unique experiences and amenities for travelers.

Sydney Best Time to Visit

Sydney’s temperate climate makes it a year-round destination. As Sydney is in the Southern Hemisphere, its summer aligns with Northern Hemisphere winter (December-February), and its winter corresponds to Northern Hemisphere summer (June-August). Late spring (October to early November) is the best time to visit Sydney. Spring (September-November): Mild temperatures (15-22°C) and blooming jacarandas in Kirribilli create picturesque settings for exploring the Royal Botanic Garden or the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. Crowds are moderate, and hotel prices are reasonable. Ideal for outdoor activities with fewer tourists than in peak season. Summer (December-February): Warm and humid (22-28°C), perfect for Bondi and Manly beaches, but peak season brings large crowds and higher prices. Major events like the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race (December 26) and New Year’s Eve fireworks at the Harbour Bridge attract millions, requiring bookings 3-4 months in advance. Expect occasional summer storms; pack sunscreen and light clothing. Autumn (March-May): Pleasant (18-25°C) with clear skies, ideal for climbing the Harbour Bridge or ferry rides to Watsons Bay. Crowds thin out, and hotels are slightly cheaper than in summer. Sydney Mardi Gras (February-March) adds vibrant energy with parades and parties. Less humidity makes it comfortable for city walks. Winter (June-August): Cool (10-18°C) and quieter, with budget-friendly hotel rates. Whale-watching cruises (June-July) to spot humpbacks and the Sydney Film Festival (June) offer unique experiences.

Sydney Travel Tips

1. Book Sydney Opera House Tours in Advance: To avoid disappointment, it's best to book your Sydney Opera House tours and performances well in advance as they often sell out quickly, especially during peak season. Tours are subject to availability, and booking ahead ensures you get your preferred time slot and avoid missing out due to rehearsals or performances. 2. Rip Current Awareness: Be aware of rip currents at beaches. If caught in one, stay calm, float, and signal for help. Don't try to swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shore to escape, and look for signs like deeper, darker water or fewer breaking waves to spot rips. 3. Wildlife Caution: Respect wildlife and keep a safe distance. Don't feed wild animals, and be cautious of potentially dangerous creatures like jellyfish and snakes. Wear protective clothing, stay on designated paths, and avoid driving at dawn or dusk to prevent wildlife accidents. 4. Strict Anti-Littering Laws: Sydney has strict anti-littering laws with heavy fines. Always dispose of your rubbish properly and use recycling bins where available. Fines can be issued for littering small items, with higher penalties for dangerous materials or larger quantities. Non-compliance with clean-up notices can also result in significant penalties.

Sydney Useful Guide

English is the official language, spoken universally across Sydney with an Australian accent.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must carry a passport with an expiration date that meets the destination's requirements (usually valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends; please refer to the actual boarding information), your cruise boarding pass (e-ticket or printed copy), and any visas required by all countries/regions on your itinerary. Depending on your nationality, other identification documents (such as a residence card or national ID card) may also be required. Please confirm the final requirements with the relevant embassies or consulates and the cruise line before departure.
Modern large cruise ships are equipped with advanced stabilizers and are routed to avoid rough seas, meaning most passengers never experience noticeable seasickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider booking a cabin on the mid-to-lower decks where movement is minimal. Other helpful tips include packing motion sickness medication, wearing anti-nausea wristbands, and getting fresh air on open decks. Note: Medication availability at the onboard medical center varies, so please check with your specific cruise line.
The vast majority of cruises automatically charge a fixed service fee to your daily cruise card account. For specific rates and collection methods, please refer to the information published by the cruise line after boarding. This fee typically covers basic gratuities for room service, dining staff, and more. Unless you wish to tip extra for exceptional service, additional cash tips are not required. We recommend consulting the cruise line's official guidelines when booking or after boarding.
Most international cruise lines use the US Dollar as their onboard currency. Upon boarding, you will link a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) to your cruise card. The ship operates on a "cashless" system, meaning all onboard purchases (dining, drinks, shopping, service fees) are charged directly to your account and settled at the end of the trip. While you don't need large amounts of cash on board, we recommend bringing some small bills (USD or local currency) for minor expenses and tips at ports of call.
Usually, within an hour after leaving port, your phone will connect to a maritime roaming network, which carries extremely high call and data roaming charges (often exceeding US$ 5/minute). We strongly advise putting your phone in Airplane Mode and relying solely on the ship's Wi-Fi. Most ships offer paid Wi-Fi packages. Purchasing a voyage-long package is generally much more cost-effective than paying by the day. Some luxury cruise lines include basic Wi-Fi in your fare.
Every international cruise ship is equipped with a medical center staffed by at least one internationally certified doctor and nurse. They are fully capable of treating common illnesses (colds, gastroenteritis) and minor injuries. Please note: Onboard medical care is quite expensive, and the pharmacy has limited stock. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance with cruise medical coverage and packing an ample supply of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you regularly use.
After boarding, you must attend a mandatory safety drill (usually required to be completed within 24 hours). During the drill, you will hear the ship's dedicated alarm signal. Please immediately put on your life jacket (located in your cabin closet) and follow the evacuation route map on the back of your door to your designated assembly station. Please keep in mind: Do not use the elevators, follow the crew's instructions, and stay calm. Even if you have been on multiple cruises, you must participate in the drill on every new voyage. Please refer to the ship's on-site broadcasts and guidance for the specific signal and assembly location.
The night before disembarkation, affix luggage tags to all checked bags as instructed by the cruise operator and leave them at the marked zone outside your cabin. Do not pack items required for the next day such as daily wear, official documents and valuables into checked luggage. Retain your passport, room key and hand luggage with yourself. On disembark day, exit your cabin by the stated timing and proceed ashore in allocated groups per announcements. Avoid remaining inside the cabin. Inspect every drawer, closet and cabin safe thoroughly. Exact timings and baggage rules follow the cruise line’s Disembarkation Guide.

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

Paul Gauguin Cruises, the French Polynesia destination expert and winner of Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Award for "Best Small Cruise Ship," announced that the 330-passenger m/s Paul Gauguin has recently completed a seven-week refurbishment in Singapore. This comprehensive multi-million-dollar renovation features refreshed spatial designs, upgraded guest facilities, and sustainable technology enhancements to continuously elevate passengers' "seamless and carefree" cruise experience. Key highlights of the refurbishment include a modern makeover for the popular Le Grill restaurant, a redesigned pool deck with shaded cabana seating areas, four new connecting staterooms, updated soft furnishings throughout the ship, and sustainable technology upgrades. The redesign was led by globally renowned transportation design firm Stirling Design International, whose innovative approach perfectly aligns with Paul Gauguin Cruises' artistic ambiance and authentic exploration ethos. Interwoven latticework, canvas elements, and warm wood finishes harmonize beautifully with breathtaking tropical landscapes, showcasing a modern aesthetic that coexists with nature. Refurbishment highlights of m/s Paul Gauguin: Connecting Staterooms: Four new connecting staterooms have been added on Deck 7 to meet the growing demand for multigenerational (family) travel, complementing the highly successful "Moana Explorer Program" for children aged 6 to 15—a program developed in partnership with Te mana o te moana, the South Pacific's premier marine education and conservation foundation. Le Grill Restaurant Makeover: The open-air restaurant by the pool features a stylish, contemporary design with white wooden screens, ceramic tiles, soft oak furniture, and chic lighting, creating an elegant dining atmosphere for guests to enjoy the ship's renowned culinary offerings. Pool Deck Transformation: The pool deck now boasts new white canopies providing shade for cabana-style seating areas, while the pool's exterior is adorned with new mosaic tiles. Spacious white loungers surround the space, offering guests a perfect spot for relaxation. Sustainable Technology: The ship now features advanced heat recovery systems, high-efficiency chillers, and optimized electric motors to significantly reduce energy consumption. A new seawater treatment system produces fresh water onboard, while the Nordaq filtration system creates drinking water from seawater, helping eliminate plastic bottles and minimize single-use plastics. Waste management improvements include glass crushers and cardboard compactors for efficient recycling. Visual Upgrades: Paying homage to parent company PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP, the ship's funnel now displays PONANT's iconic "Three Sails" logo, crafted from polished steel with LED backlighting for striking nighttime visibility. Summer Nights: A Romantic Fireworks Cruise Tour

Summer Nights: A Romantic Fireworks Cruise Tour

Isabu Cruise is located in Dolsan-eup, Yeosu City. When you think of Yeosu, many people imagine spending a romantic day watching the sunset or enjoying the night views on a cruise tour. This time, I experienced the Yeosu Night Sea Fireworks Tour, where I could enjoy both the night scenery and a spectacular fireworks display. Cruising through the sparkling night views felt like being abroad, and the fireworks show in the middle of the sea was breathtakingly beautiful! After the fireworks, there's even a magic show to enjoy, making it a perfect outing with friends, partners, or family. 📍Isabu Cruise ▫️ Address: 3617-18 Dolsan-ro, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do ▫️ Operating Hours: Daily 09:30 AM - 7:30 PM → Yeosu Night Sea Fireworks Tour: 7:30 PM
