"Stayed in Nepenthes Suite. It’s close to many hiking trails in Kinabalu park and hence it’s in the midst of nature. You can go on trails of varying lengths and difficulty. Lots of birdwatching too. However one will need to rent a car or hire a driver to reach this place from KK city. And without a vehicle it’s difficult to explore the surrounding places. But if you are content to just relax and take walks in the park and enjoy nature this is a great place to stay. However the rooms are dated especially the pantry and bathroom. They encourage you to take breakfast later at 9am instead of 6.30 am. This is to avoid the rush hour when those climbing mt Kinabalu take breakfast before their ascent. However I found that some of the items were already no longer available and they were not replenished."

"When I first stayed at Xin Na Er Hotel, I didn't have high expectations. Hostels, for me, were always just 'transitional spaces between cities.' But my first impression was a very restrained sense of cleanliness—not the kind of striking design that immediately wows you, but rather you slowly realize that every detail here is maintained in a stable state. Later, I left Kota Kinabalu and put the experience in a corner of my memory. Until I returned a second time. Stepping back into the place, there was a distinct moment that made me pause: the space had barely changed. The equipment, the structure, and even that 'used but not worn out' state were all still there. It wasn't updated to be more luxurious; instead, it maintained the same standard as when I first saw it. This feeling is rare—most places show their age, but this one felt 'frozen in time.' The location hadn't changed either; it was still on the bustling Gaya Street, the city's main artery during the day. A short walk at night would take you to the Kota Kinabalu Waterfront. It doesn't need to explain its 'convenience' because it is inherently central. This time, I had a clearer view of its structure: it's not just a bunk bed hostel but also offers private rooms. So you see different types of people coexisting—solo travelers, newly formed groups of friends, couples, and even small families on a short stay—all within the same system, yet without interfering with each other. This mix isn't chaotic; rather, it's very stable. The pace of life here is restrained. It doesn't deliberately create social situations or force you to blend into any atmosphere. You can be quiet, or have brief conversations, but there's no pressure. This kind of space, which 'doesn't over-design human behavior,' is actually quite rare. Some details only became apparent over time, such as the consistent hygiene and maintenance. Many places are great in the first year and decline in the second, but not here. It's more like a straight line—no significant fluctuations. This stability is harder to achieve than a 'one-time wow.' Of course, there are minor issues. Water pressure on higher floors can be a bit weak during peak usage, but that's a structural issue on a practical level and doesn't affect the overall judgment. If I were to place it in a larger frame of reference, I'd think of systemic hostels like Backpackers' 10 Years Youth Hostel. They don't win by one-time design brilliance but by consistently maintaining the same standard over the long term. So in the end, my judgment of it became very simple: The first time was an impression; the second time was verification. The result of that verification is—it hasn't fallen behind. Therefore, I'd give it five stars, not because it's perfect, but because it's stable and worth returning to. If this model could extend to more cities in Sabah, it might not just improve the accommodation experience but also foster a more sustained and orderly travel ecosystem."
