The hotel is in need of a complete refurbishment.
There is peeling window frames and wallpaper and the lifts don't work - not for the old and infirm.
The room we were given was on the second floor and we were told it was overlooking the Castle which we couldn't see through dirty windows.
Its a shame really as the hotel is very much part of Cardiff's history but you get the impression that the owners are just making-do presumably because the cost of bringing the hotel up to date will cost millions - sorry won't be back
We went to the Royal Hotel not really knowing what to expect.
It is set with a lovely building. The architecture is beautiful.
The hotel is set out in an odd way but I think that adds the character. You enter on the ground floor, go up two floors to reception. There is a small bar there that offers free teas and coffees.
The slug and lettuce down stairs provides you with 20% off of food if you show your keycard.
The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable about the local area.
Location is good and because we were on the 4th floor we couldn’t hear the noise for the streets below.
The room was ok. Aircon in the room with tea and coffee.
Now two great points that I’ve been saving….!!
1. The shower! Let me tell you something it’s like I was sat in a typhoon, Cardiff clearly doesn’t have an issue with its water pressure!
2. The bed, it was luxurious, I was able to sink and sleep so soundly! We need this bed for our house!
If you need somewhere quiet then this place isn’t for you as it’s right in the city centre near all the party goings on, but if you’re joining in with those things then it’s perfect as right by the train station and all the local amenities!
Friendly staff though.
Fairly clean but could use some TLC.
Decent hotel, centrally located close to the train station making it a very convenient place to stay. Staff very welcoming and took into account my special request and booked me a quiet room which was appreciated.
Breakfast, nothing special, just like any other hotel breakfast in the uk. Good views at the breakfast area, staff on hand to help and often going out of their way to help.
Service was 10/10.
Rooms themselves felt a little old and could do with a touch up but comfy enough for a short stay! Coffee machine too!
A very satisfying stay.
The hotel is ideally located, just a five-minute walk from the train station and bus terminal, and within fifteen minutes of Cardiff Castle. Several supermarkets and restaurants are nearby, making it very convenient. Although it doesn't have many reviews on Ctrip, I noticed it was very busy when I checked in, with many international tourists staying.
The room was spacious, easily enough for two suitcases, and the bed was large enough for two. Despite the hotel's proximity to the street and train tracks, it was very quiet: the corridors were carpeted to minimize noise, and the windows and walls were well insulated. During my two-night stay, I didn't hear any train or street noise. The room window had a great view of Cardiff Bay. The air conditioning worked well with both cooling and heating. There was no drinking water in the room, but complimentary lemonade was available on the first floor.
The receptionist who checked me in was very friendly and helpful. He proactively explained the events taking place at Cardiff Castle that day and provided directions to the area. Unfortunately, I can't remember his name, but I remember him as a young, white man without glasses. I've been traveling through several cities in the UK, and of the hotels I've stayed in, this hotel has the most welcoming front desk. The only downside is that there are only two staff members on the first floor at any one time. This level houses the hotel check-in, a restaurant, a bar, vending machines, and luggage storage. The staff seemed incredibly busy, and whether it was taking a restaurant order, checking out, checking in, or picking up luggage, it took three to five minutes for them to come over. The staff were friendly and helpful, but they were certainly busy. It would have been helpful if the hotel had more staff on the first floor.
The location is really convenient for getting around, with train and bus stations nearby. There are also plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance, and Cardiff Castle is just a short stroll away. The room might be a bit on the small side, but it has all the necessary amenities, including a kettle. The reception staff were friendly and very helpful. It would be even better if there was a microwave! There's also a small Thai restaurant not too far away; we actually bought some food from there and ate it in the hotel lobby. Overall, it's a great place to stay. I'd definitely choose this hotel again when I come back to Cardiff.
I had a wonderful stay at Cardiff Marriott!
The location is perfect — just a short walk from the train station. The service was excellent, and the staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. We were given a spacious room and were even allowed to check in early, which made our arrival smooth and relaxing. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!
Comfortable and Modern Stay
I had a pleasant stay at this hotel. The design was simple yet modern, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The room was well-maintained, featuring a spacious and comfortable bed. The bathroom was clean and well-equipped, adding to the overall comfort. A great choice for a straightforward and enjoyable stay!
I couldn’t not fault the hotel, I amazing stay the staff were very helpful and friendly too. Hotel is right by central, easy access to pubs and restaurants.
The room was fabulous too OMG I didn’t wanted come home. :(
I had room service I had pasta bolognaise which was blinking lush I wanted another one.
Good location about 5 minutes walk from Cardiff Central station. The room is small but big enough for sleeping. Cleaning once every 2 days. Amenity does not have toothpaste set.
On the last day, the cleaning lady took my towel that was drying in the room by mistake. At one point, I wondered what would happen, but he kindly searched for me from among a large number of dry cleaners. Overall, customer service is a good impression.

GGuest User1. I was allocated a room without window. It's terrible and unbearable stuffy. In such room you can not enjoy the staying let along the sea view. After I called the reception,I got a new room with balcony which is better.2. The facility is too old and the decoration style must be the last century
GGuest UserI have a really mixed feeling about this hotel. I booked the superior room with tree lined view and asked for a quiet room: the receptionist gave me an extremely cold and noisy room right next to the motorway and above some nightclubs. My watch has identified the noise level is over the normal limit. I couldn’t fall asleep due to the loud noise even at midnight. I called the receptionist to change a room. Unfortunately, they first gave me a standard room that the heating system was not working and much smaller than I have paid for. The two maintenance officers who came to check the heating system are very helpful and suggested to change to another room. Only by then, I was able to change to another room that matched the similar sized of a superior room, but without tree lined view. I must say that all the receptionists were friendly and polite but behind their friendliness, they are not really helpful at all. I had my dinner, a sea bass meal, at the restaurant - see the photo. The dinner and the service was both outstanding. The kettle in the room was not very clean; it could easily be cleaned by using small spray to remove the calcium. The gym and swimming pool are excellent. If you are not used to live in really loud room, please double check with the receptionists. It is also not worth to pay an extra 10 pounds per night to get a so called tree lined room with extreme loud noise. I also wonder the reason for the hotel to give customers rooms that the heating system are not working. It would helpful to check before they allocate room to customers. It would also helpful that the hotel ensure that the room has reasonable temperature before admitting guests, esp on a very cold winter night. Overall, this is not a very good experience. I was not able to sleep for a whole night. I paid extra in the hope of getting a better and quiet room but ended up with one of the worst room without getting any compensation.
NNadiaI feel like the cleaning service could have been better. Dirty towels left behind, cleaners forgetting their phones in the room, coming in to clean even if do not disturb sign placed and on checkout day before checkout time. It was very expensive for what was offered to be honest
JJonathan LeeGood location not far from centre of Cardiff. Service was poor, receptionists seemed like they didn’t want to be working there and breakfast staff like their family had just died. That said the breakfast was good quality and the room was good. Needed some cobwebs removed and mould cleaned from bathroom

RRhiBeePositives: Receptionist on the desk was nice and polite.
The room itself was large, had a kettle with coffee etc, iron and ironing board, shampoo and body wash, comfy large bed.
Negatives: the hotel was so loud not from other rooms but from outside, I did ask for a quiet room. But was woken again at 4am with the sound of bass that carried on until 5am! Should have guessed it was going to be noisy when the receptionist mentioned they could provide ear plugs if needed!
The receptionist did say if it was too loud we could move but it wasn’t at 3pm.
And there was no point in moving at 2am when we heard the outside noise.
If I could guarantee a room that was definitely quiet I would stay again.
CCC TsangBrilliant location! Not far from Cardiff Central Station. Close to the Castle, the Market, various Arcades, and Bute Park for Cardiff Boat Tours to the Cardiff Bay. Lots of eateries and nice restaurants nearby too.
The indoor swimming pool is absolutely a plus.
GGuest UserTHIS IS THE SECOND TIME WE HAVE STAYED AT ”THE HOTEL INDIGO” & IT WILL DEFINATLY NOT BE THE LAST! WE CANNOT FIND ANY FAULTS WITH THIS HOTEL AT ALL. THE STAFF ARE EXTREMELY FRIENDLY & GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO BE HELFUL. EVERYWHERE IS SPOTLESSLY CLEAN, EVEN THE SHOWER GEL SMELLS REALLY NICE! THE BREAKFAST IS THE BEST IN CARDIFF, AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED, SO MUCH CHOICE, & ITS ALL LOVELY, DON'T KNOW HOW THEY DO IT. THE CENTRAL LOCATION IS SUPERB FOR ALL ATTRACTIONS & PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINKS. THANKS FOR A PERFECT BANK HOLIDAY BREAK, SEE YOU AGAIN VERY SOON 😊
GGuest UserI really enjoyed my stay overall. The location was fantastic—on a beautiful street—and the hotel building itself is stunning. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by a very kind Italian gentleman, which gave me a great first impression. My room, though located in a separate area, was clean, modern, and nicely decorated. Everything looked fresh and well thought out.
However, I was disappointed to find visible stains on the bed sheets. While I believe they had been washed, the stains hadn’t come out and the sheets were still used, which didn’t match the high standard the rest of the hotel presented. I think they should have replaced them.
Another minor inconvenience was the bathroom light, which was automatic and triggered the extractor fan. This meant that even during the night, using the bathroom caused the noisy fan to stay on for a while, which could’ve been avoided with a manual light switch, in my opinion.
Despite these issues, the stay was mostly very positive, but I can’t give a full five stars because of the sheets. Hopefully this can be improved for future guests.
