Braving the cold wave, I went to Hengshan to see the snow. It was a two-day trip from Hong Kong, taking the high-speed rail round trip. The snow scenery was beautiful. Had a great time!

Hengshan

Mount Hengshan (衡山), formally known as Nanyue — the Southern Great Mountain, ranks among China’s Five Great Sacred Mountains. Situated on the plains of Hengyang, Hunan Province, its highest peak Zhurong Peak stands at 1,300.2 m. It has been a revered pilgrimage site for more than one thousand years, and it is one of the most accessible sacred mountains in China with a high‑speed‑rail station less than 30 minutes away.

How to Get to Mount Hengshan?

The mountain sits inside Nanyue District of Hengyang city. Nanyue town at the foot hosts the Grand Temple, visitor centre, hotels and dining outlets.

Private vehicles cannot drive all the way to the summit

The last‑mile tip: Once you arrive in Nanyue town, major sites start on foot. The Grand Temple is a short stroll from most hotels. Purchase eco‑bus tickets at the visitor centre for the mountain ascent. The bus terminates at South Heavenly Gate, from where you walk the final stretch towards Zhurong Peak.

The mountain range itself is open round‑the‑clock, but ticket gates, eco‑buses and individual temples follow fixed operating hours.

Many hikers start climbing between 22:00‑00:00 to reach Zhurong Peak before dawn.

  • Essentials: head‑torch, spare batteries, plenty of warm layers, power bank.
  • Summit conditions: very cold and windy pre‑sunrise. Check local sunrise times and add extra time buffer so you do not miss sunrise.

Side alternative trails

  • Fanyin Valley: Quiet stream‑side hiking path, connects to the main trail near Martyrs’ Shrine, great for escaping busy paved roads.
  • Mojing Terrace & Magu Fairyland: The most picturesque mid‑mountain segment, worth visiting even if you travel uphill mostly by bus.
  • Water Curtain Cave: Separate attraction down at the mountain foot; not part of the main summit ascent route.
