Two Rivers and Four Lakes Scenic Area also depicts an awesome night view. The Li River section of Yangshuo offers idyllic countryside views. You can ride a bike or go hiking here. By Air Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL): The primary gateway, located ~28 km (17 miles) west of downtown. It serves both international and domestic flights. To City Center from KWL: Airport Shuttles run every 30–60 minutes to downtown drop-off points (~50 minutes). Taxis and private transfers are available for direct travel to the city center or nearby Yangshuo. By Train Guilin North Railway Station: The largest hub for high-speed trains connecting to other major cities. Guilin Railway Station: Most centrally located station, convenient for downtown access. Guilin West Railway Station: Primarily handles long-distance high-speed transit routes. To City Center: All stations are integrated with the local public bus network and taxi stands. By Bus Regional bus services provide easy access to nearby scenic destinations. Guilin North Bus Terminal serves as a key departure point for intercity routes. Yangshuo: Frequent express buses depart from areas near Guilin Railway Station and the North Bus Terminal, taking approximately 1.5 hours. Longji Rice Terraces: Direct tourist buses run to the Heping ticket office and onward to villages such as Dazhai and Ping’an, with a travel time of 2.5–3 hours.

The best time to visit Guilin is from April to October, as this period offers a blend of warm sunshine, gentle breezes, and the most comfortable weather for exploring the enchanting natural scenery. April and May provide the opportunity to experience the Li River's beauty after the drizzle, while July and August are perfect for hiking and capturing the lush greenery. September and October are ideal for witnessing the golden terraced fields at sunset, and the autumn months offer less rain with hot-to-mild weather, perfect for outdoor activities and enjoying the golden autumn paddy fields. However, it is advisable to avoid Chinese public holidays due to large crowds and higher costs.

Many people ask me: Should I choose sunny or rainy days to visit Guilin? Honestly, I used to only pick sunny days. It wasn't until I encountered rain in Yangshuo once that I realized Guilin is quite beautiful on rainy days too. Here is what to photograph on sunny versus rainy days, how to shoot with your phone, and the best time to visit. 📍Best months to visit Guilin (it mainly depends on what you want to photograph) March–May: Guilin's spring rainy season. There's a lot of fog and rain, and the mountains are often shrouded in mist. It's great for photographing the misty Li River and capturing an ink-wash painting aesthetic. However, it rains frequently during this time, so your itinerary might be disrupted—be prepared for that. September–October: Guilin's dry season. There's little rain, the sky is clear, and the weather is comfortable. It's perfect for shooting grand sunny landscapes, sunrises and sunsets, clear reflections on the Li River, and the autumn harvest at the Longji Rice Terraces, where the mountains turn golden—very photogenic. June–August: The peak of Guilin's rainy season. In June, it rains almost every other day, and heavy fog often blankets the river. But it's not impossible to visit during this time; the mist after the rain is stunning, and since it's summer vacation, your schedule might be more flexible. Sunny days start to increase from late July, and the river becomes clearer in August, though it gets a bit hot and crowded. December–February: Winter. There's little rain, more sunny days, fewer tourists, and prices are lower. The only downside is the low temperature; the average in January is only about 9 degrees, so think twice if you're sensitive to the cold. 📍What to photograph on sunny vs. rainy days On sunny days, the light in Guilin is harsh, the contrast is high, and the colors are vibrant, making it suitable for grand landscape portraits and sunrises/sunsets. For the Li River peaks, use the 5x telephoto lens on your phone to compress the mountains together, which brings out the sense of depth. For portraits on sunny days, the light is soft before 8:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. It's great for side-backlighting, giving your hair and shoulders a golden rim light. Guilin on a rainy day is completely different. The light is soft, the contrast is low, and the whole world is a blue-gray, like an ink-wash painting by an ancient artist. Don't shoot standard grand landscapes at this time, as the fog will make them look gray. Instead, focus on details and mood. Shoot a lone tree in a field on a cloudy day, with the tree and distant mountains veiled in mist. Combine rice paddies and mountain peaks; the paddies are especially green after the rain, contrasting with the blue-gray mountains. For the Longji Rice Terraces, take overhead shots of the geometric lines of the terraces amidst the clouds and mist. As the mist flows between the mountains, the grand view becomes an ink-wash painting. 📍How to shoot with your phone on rainy days 1. Turn off HDR. If you use HDR on a rainy day, the image will be brightened, and the layers of fog will disappear. Turn off HDR, long-press the screen to lock focus, and drag down the little sun icon to lower the exposure by 0.3 to 0.7 stops; the layers of mist will immediately appear. 2. Use 2x or 5x zoom; don't use the 1x main camera. 2x to 5x zoom can compress the mountains and fog together, creating more of an ink-wash painting feel. 3. Turn on Live mode. The fog and wind are moving on rainy days. After pressing the shutter, you can select the frame in Live mode where the fog flow looks most natural. I personally prefer Guilin on rainy days. It's less crowded and quiet, and the entire landscape is veiled in mist, like an unfinished ink-wash painting. Sunny Guilin is for tourists; rainy Guilin is for those willing to wait. Next time you go to Guilin, don't just wait for sunny days—try picking a rainy one.
