Hostels in Gifu Prefecture, Japan

I stayed for 5 nights, and first of all, the price is very reasonable for a backpacker hostel. Check-in is done online: you choose your language, scan your passport, and have a f2f call with the staff via an iPad. FYI, there is a mandatory accommodation tax in Japan of 100 yen per night. You can also request a paid ”Irori” service at a nearby sister branch, where you can grill your own ingredients over a traditional Japanese sunken hearth. Just a reminder: you can get fresh ingredients from the nearby market ”Family Store Satoh” or further away at ”Surugaya Asumo.” The common area isn't huge, and the kitchen is basic but functional with tableware, an electric kettle, ovens, a microwave, and a mini fridge. The tap water is drinkable; the mixer tap can be toggled to adjust the temperature, so you won't get a chill from the ice cold water in winter! 😂 In the back, there are a toilet, three shower stalls, and communal sinks, along with a washing machine and dryer that are free to use (you just need to buy detergent from the capsule machine or bring your own) Since it's a hostel, the dorms have top and bottom bunks. The bunks are quite spacious and come with two power outlets (remember your travel adapter!), an overhead locker (bring your own padlock), a towel, and two hooks. You have to make your own bed; it's a futon-style setup where you lay the linens on the mattress. A pillow and duvet are provided. During winter, they run the AC (split system) on heat mode to keep it cozy. In the room, there’s a luggage storage area and hanging rods for clothes. On the second floor where I stayed, there are two toilets in the room: one with a urinal and another unisex one with a smart bidet/washlet. To be honest, while it's very close to the Miyagawa Morning Market, it feels a bit far from the Nohi Bus Center and JR Station. If you don't like walking or tire easily, this might be a bit of a challenge. Overall, it's a great, affordable choice for backpackers😗

Ggreat guest house. big, beautiful in traditional Japanese style. Big kitchen with all the necessary utensils, there is also a table outside for those who like to drink tea outside. Lots of free space and a quiet area.

During our National Day holiday trip with the kids, we passed through Takayama, a quiet and pleasant town. The Miyagawa hostel we stayed at was truly impressive. It preserved characteristic old-style Japanese architecture, yet the check-in process was incredibly modern; the owner handled everything remotely and online! The room for three was quite spacious, with tatami mats on the floor – a very authentic Japanese experience. The Malyu-juku and Tsumago-juku stations were truly atmospheric, making you feel like you'd stepped back into Edo-period Japan. The forest hiking trails were also well worth it, featuring forests, boardwalks, streams, and valleys. Although it was tiring and we were pressed for time, it was totally worth it!

Genuine Japanese style accommodation in an Onsen. Facilities are limited but one encounters Japan like no other. Admitting that sleeping on a mattress next to each other is not for everyone and so might be the public shower in the Onsen. Shuttle bus to the city is needed as its quite far from the city centre. Luggage storage is very limited. Curfew at 11pm without exception.

Cleanliness is ok. It was a perfect stay if you just sleep. It is within walking distance to the international conference hall and is good for business use.

The room was incredibly spacious and clean. I especially loved the kitchen, perfect for cooking the Hida beef I bought from the butcher – amazing value for money! Plus, having a washer and dryer was a huge convenience. It's also super close to both the Nohi Bus Center and Takayama Station, which was really handy.

Extremely convenient location. The ”rooms” are quite comfortable. They're more like very spacious capsules, where some people can even stand upright! Check-in is remote; the person I spoke with spoke English, and the whole process took about 3 minutes. Nearby, you can do laundry and visit establishments with hotel discounts (I didn't try them). An excellent option if you want something cheap without being in a shared dorm room.

The owner of the accomodation is really accomodating The only thing that I observed was that the location has not much to offer when you're looking for some food So on my second day I did bought foods that will suffice until the next morning

The location is very convenient, very near to train station and city centre. Luggages storage is available and there is kitchen for guests to use.
