Return Inn (Kashgar Ancient City Branch)

Very Good

Excellent service and a very clean, spacious room with comfortable bedding. The location is fantastic, right at the entrance of the ancient city. Popular spots like the century-old teahouse, Id Kah Mosque, Rainbow Alley, Buidai Alley, 'Grandpa's Grandpa's Father's Nang' (a famous naan shop), and Oil Painting Street are all just a stone's throw from Guilai Inn. There are plenty of local eateries downstairs, making dining very convenient. The owner is very welcoming, and the soundproofing in the rooms is excellent. The night views are beautiful and captivating. Plus, there are bus stops nearby for easy access to the airport and train station. It was a pleasant trip and I highly recommend it; you definitely won't regret staying at this inn.

Urumqi Xiyu Harbour Youth Hostel

Hostel is about 5 - 7 minutes away from the ”Sports Centre” metro station, which is about 25+ minutes from the airport. The hostel entrance is next to the Tesla shop, and you have to press the buzzer, for the security guard to open the gate for you. Then, after writing your name down in the guest-book, you go up to the 10th floor in the lift. (Check the other reviews here, for a picture of the gate/door to the building) The staff speak little to no English, but they are very helpful. They will try to solve your issues, as long as you patient with the translation software. Also, it is difficult for staff to check you in, if you do not have a contact number or Alipay/Wechat contact. (This is a CN Govt requirement) The dorm rooms are basic and you may get the city views. There are no privacy curtains and there was no air-con, in my one. The hostel staff can provide fans, but we did not need any, as it was still cool at night. The beds are OK. There is a bathroom in the dorm room too, but there was almost no privacy for the bathroom, as there was a gap between the door for others to see and you can see through the frosted glass into the bathroom too! The hostel is relatively clean, quiet and well-located, except there may be other local guests, who are loud and smoke sometimes in the other rooms. Next to the hostel is a nice up-market shopping centre and with really lots to eat, in the food-court on the 3rd floor.

Kailash Youth Hostel

This hostel isn't super far from LiuXing Street, but it's not right next door either. It's about a 10-minute walk, which is nice for a stroll to digest your food, but you can't just pop right over. The room situation really depends on luck. If it's not full, there's decent space – you can open your luggage, chill on the bed and relax comfortably. But once it's full, the whole room instantly feels cramped. The ceiling even seems lower, and if several people are trying to move around, you're constantly bumping into each other. It definitely feels less breathable. Heads up: shower gel and shampoo aren't provided, so you need to bring your own. You also have to put on and take off your own bedding (sheets, duvet cover, pillowcase). Also, the road right outside is currently under construction. It's all dug up like a battlefield, full of potholes and very dusty. Dragging luggage in and out is a real hassle; you have to lift your suitcase and carry it for a bit. Coming back at night, it's dark, so you have to be careful not to twist an ankle. Once the road is fixed, the experience will definitely be much better.

In Xinjiang, I ended up spending more than a week leisurely in Kashgar. Every day, I just walked around the ancient city, ate mutton and fruits, walked around the Bazaar. Kashgar was so comfortable. The environment of the youth hostel was very good. The location was very good. It was very convenient for girls on the first floor. The public area was also very nice. The young lady grew up. It must be beautiful, hygienic and very clean! The boss is also very nice and humorous. It's like living in their home. It's really fun and leisurely to eat and chat in the living room. I recommend Kashgar. See you next time.

A beautiful little courtyard tucked away in the old town, full of local charm and character. The front desk lady was super friendly and gave us a warm introduction. The room was really clean and tidy (oops, forgot to snap some photos!). The owner also has a very lively dog! Since it's an all-female stay, there were no safety concerns at all. We even saw some neighborhood cats wandering into the courtyard occasionally. Overall, a fantastic place to stay, highly recommend!

Came to Kashgar with friends on motorcycles and stayed at 'Guren Gui' – best decision ever! The landlady is an amazing cook, and you can join in for shared meals. Parking is super easy right outside the courtyard. Plus, there are mulberries and figs you can pick freely. There were also a lot of foreigners here, and chatting with them was really fun. The hostel common area is huge and super comfy on the first floor, not hot at all, and you can even sing and dance together.

My stay was fantastic! The courtyard is beautiful, and it's super close to all the attractions in the Old Town, plus public transport is really convenient. The owner is so welcoming and friendly. You can even join in for meals, and the restaurant they recommended was delicious with a great atmosphere. After staying in hostels throughout my trip, this one definitely gets a big thumbs up!

Five stars, highly recommended! This hostel is an absolute gem for solo travelers. The location is superb, very close to the subway station, with plenty of restaurants and attractions nearby, making it incredibly convenient for getting around and shopping. The overall cleanliness exceeded my expectations. The rooms, bathrooms, and common areas are cleaned daily, and there's no unpleasant smell. Each bed comes with a blackout curtain, charging socket, and a locker, offering great privacy. The mattress is soft, and the environment is quiet at night, ensuring a high-quality rest. The owner and front desk staff are warm and thoughtful; they share local tour routes and food recommendations, which is incredibly helpful for planning your trip. The common area has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for chatting and connecting with backpackers from all over. If you prefer not to socialize, you can also quietly enjoy your own company – it's super chill. The price is affordable, offering excellent value for money. It's clean and safe, making it ideal for students and backpackers. This will be my top choice when visiting this area, and I'll definitely stay here again!

The room was spotless and was cleaned daily during my three-day stay. The owner has an amazing personality and patiently answered all my questions about local travel tips, which I really appreciated 🙏. The hostel has a fantastic vibe; everyone was making plans to explore together, watching movies, singing, playing games, and those who were good at cooking even prepared meals – just remember to clean up afterwards! I had a truly wonderful and comfortable stay, it was definitely a highlight of my Xinjiang trip.

HUAKE YOUTH HOSTEL

8.6/10

Huake was previously a hotel converted into an international youth hostel. We booked a twin-bed room for one night. There is a Uyghur girl who spoke impecable Mandarin with a tad bit of Beijing ascent at the front desk when we arrived. The check-in was speedy. The room was spacious and clean so were the bedding (no foul smell). The uniqueness about this hostel is, it does not provide bath towels and toilet papers. Instead, guests are given one-use towels and a pack of tissue papers which we double up as toilet papers. Initially, I thought the one-use towels (place on a try in the room) were bathing soap because they were in compressed form so I went to ask the Uyghur girl for towls and she told me those are actually compressed one-use towels. There are restaurants and minimarts next to the hostel and a night food street nearby (approx 200-300m by foot). No a bad choice if you need a layover or a couple of days stay to explore Kuqa.
