Melbourne City Backpackers is a top pick for solo budget travelers like me exploring Melbourne. Centrally located near Southern Cross Station and Queen Victoria Market, it's perfect for hopping on trams or the SkyBus from the airport, and just a short trip to Phillip Island penguins. Friendly staff shared insider tips on local cafes and sights, while the free breakfast kickstarted my days.
The spacious dorms came with lockers (bring your own padlock), power outlets, and decent cleanliness—common areas stayed sociable without feeling chaotic. Kitchen facilities were well-equipped for self-catering on a student budget. Only minor downsides: street noise at night (earplugs helped) and no elevator, so pack light. Overall, unbeatable value at ~$30/night—highly recommend for backpackers wanting convenience and vibe! 9/10.

Great location, but the street outside is noisy, so remember to bring earplugs. The kitchen is decent, with a fridge, microwave, and various dishes/utensils (a bit small but functional). Don't forget to bring your own slippers, toiletries, toothpaste, and toothbrush. They provide free large bath towels. From the airport, take the 901 bus to the Broadmarsh station, then transfer to a direct train to Southern Cross. The hotel is a 5-6 minute walk from there, or you can take a tram if you prefer not to walk.

If you're coming to Christchurch, you absolutely have to stay here – it's the perfect hostel! The 8-bed dorms are incredibly spacious, featuring long benches and sofas, and they even have two bathrooms.
The common areas are furnished with high-quality, comfortable pieces, and there's even a yoga studio and a movie theater in the building. You really need to experience it!
The location is great too, very close to the bus terminal.
The only downsides are that the kitchen is small and there's no freezer.
Such a cozy place nestled in the heart of Grampians. Easy access to hiking trails (but some are closed in January due to bushfires). Plenty of social space inside the hostel. Rooms are quite but lack curtains.
This was one of the best yha we have stayed at. The room was bare but that is to be expected. The amenities, by contrast, were excellent: Two well appointed kichens with nice pans and plenty of space; A roof area and multiple living room areas; an herb garden and plenty of recycling areas; and the games and TV area looked brand new and not old and worn out . The kids enjoyed it and so did we. Highly recommended.
Highly recommended!
We had a great stay in a comfortable and spacious room. Location is also great and public transport is close. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Value for money, the price is unbeatable for Australia.
The room was big, the bed was clean, I was glad I didn't miss the trip, the scenery was great, and there was a small balcony, I enjoyed it very much. The hotel has many services, although I didn't try them one by one, but they are heartwarming enough
Great location just a five minute drive to Woolies. The room is very clean with plenty of supplies like plates, bowls, tablewares, cotton swabs... The owner is pretty kind as well. Affordable and quality accommodations.
Lovely vibes, cool chill areas, community bar and community events plus the staff especially the lovely guy who booked me in was Amazing. However it's a very crappy old building with Nil working properly showers and broken toilets. I had 1 night in a nice female room which I barely even saw as I was out and Tried to rest at a 2nd booking being shoved into a mixed smelly weird noisy dorm on a top bunk with ****** knocking on the door at all hrs, one guy snoring and another twat on the phone I told off. Was stressful and I hadn't a Warm shower in a working functioning bathroom in 2 days. Not returning. If you like noisy rude tourists and old buildings with no lift carrying your bags everywhere and no showers, great!

Very Good
AAnonymous UserGood for one people stay caused it is not much space. Ameities can requested at reception. Location quite good can walk to Southern Cross station, Flinder Station or Town Hall station. For Uber, driver might drop you at the closest street, Flinder Lane. Easy walk just 1 mins but quite hard if you have 2 luggages.
GGuest UserVery clean, nice renovated rooms with all amenities including microwave. Very comfortable bed and pillows, plenty of luggage space. Coffee/tea/sugar and biscuits. Each room has it's own designated parking. Reception woman was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend it and will definitely be staying again soon

AAnonymous UserThanks for a great experience during our stay. We had a spacious family room including a queen bed, a single bed and double bunk. The kitchenette had equipment beyond the norm. There was plenty of natural light from full length windows near the balcony. We easily walked to cafes and supermarket.
AAnonymous UserMy husband was so happy to stay for one night. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The place was quite clean. The place is recommendable
GGuest User01/1/26 $178. Stayed one night. Never again. The place was despicable, rubbish outside lower room areas, dried spilled liquid on concrete lower storage area, collected bed/linen sacks overflowing with some on the ground, refuse everywhere around steps to upper level, one upper level exit staircase closed off (huge fire danger evacuation issue), very ratty carpets, unclean mirror, squeaky entry door (hear it across the car park), otherwise clean bathroom but exhaust fan/light inoperative, curtain ripped, AND THE MANAGER JAMES? HAD A VERY POOR ATTITUDE, VERY ABRUPT (pointed his finger in my face when I challenged his attitude, & when sliding my receipt to me, held it down firmly with his other hand so I couldn’t take it and demanded respect when he was the one who was rude). All the above statements are my opinion. My wife agreed with me.

GGuest UserI think the facilities are worth the price.
There were two outlets next to the bed, but one of them couldn't fit because of the width of the bed rail and the size of the plug.
I paid $6 for towels when I checked in, and got $5 back when I checked out.
