Hostels in Yunnan, China

After reading some negative reviews, I decided to give this place a try, as I felt I could completely accept the downsides. And it turned out to be really great because I met some wonderful people! Terry was like a resident assistant and a tour guide rolled into one – reminding me to blow-dry my hair, taking me to delicious places to eat and fun spots to visit, and recommending amazing food. They were truly exceptional! The women I met there were also incredibly awesome, and I'll definitely be keeping in touch with them!

Not really a youth hostel but someone's high rise flat filled with beds on 7th floor. Excellent location near to railway station but difficult to find on the map and you need to ring the owner who doesn't speak English. I've added the photo of the entrance doorway and amended map but you still need to ring the owner to get access. Cramped, only one bathroom for a lot of people, but kitchen with kettle and living area, good budget accommodation for a night, I wouldn't stay here longer.

Location is perfect, just few minutes to go to Dali ancient city by walking. The owner can speak English very well. Friendly and helpful

After being terrified by plenty of hostels around China, I finally found this place – home. Plenty of guests extend their stay, from days to weeks and months, and keep coming back even after that. If you are looking for a place to relax, recover or to just breathe, then this might be a place for you. There are plenty of things to do in and around Jianshui. You could rent a bicycle here and visit Tuanshan on a daytrip, for example. You won't regret staying here.

A friend recommended this hostel, and it was easy to find with a great atmosphere. It's clean and hygienic! The owner also organizes a lot of activities, like communal meals, stream trekking, mushroom foraging, and watching the sunrise. They also recommend many delicious places to eat and fun things to do nearby – you won't be disappointed! It's fantastic! I'll definitely stay here again when I come to Dali! Superb! You can also play board games and karaoke!

True to its reputation as a seasoned hostel, the location is absolutely superb – no need to even mention it. After finishing the Halfway Hiker's section of Tiger Leaping Gorge, you can just turn right into the hostel. What's more, among all the dorms I've stayed in at various hostels, the cleanliness here is the best I've ever experienced. It's incredibly tidy.

My room was tidy, the bedding was clean, and the bathroom was spotless with a stable hot water supply. The owner and staff were warm and easygoing, patiently recommending local routes and offering helpful tips to avoid tourist traps – very thoughtful. The facilities are comprehensive; the communal living room is great for relaxing, chatting, and even taking care of some personal tasks. Overall, it's quiet and not noisy, ensuring a good night's sleep, making it excellent value for money. It doesn't feel overly commercialized and has that authentic travel atmosphere. Whether you're on a short layover or a longer trip, this is a fantastic choice. I'll definitely prioritize staying here again next time. Highly recommended for backpackers!

I stayed for two nights here in a four bed women dormitory. It is simple and you have all the services that you need : a kitchen, a washing machine, little food shops at the building's entrance and it's not far from the railway station. Also, hosts are wonderful !! They prepared a meal in the evening. We visited town together : they brought me to Kunming lake, street snacks, food market in the morning and a nice park. All that for free !! I highly recommend this homestay. Simple, not expensive and warm up. 😊🙌

I stayed here during my short stopover in Kunming. The staff were warm and friendly, and patiently answered my questions about sightseeing routes. The hotel is conveniently located in a quiet spot despite being in a bustling area. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and odor-free. The common areas have a coffee bar and vending machines, and the facilities are very modern. The guests were all well-behaved, and it was quiet at night, making it perfect for backpackers.

The location is fantastic, just two to three hundred meters from the metro station. There are plenty of local eateries and restaurants nearby, and you can explore the flower market right downstairs. Wetland parks are within a few kilometers (no need to go all the way to Laoyu River; Dounan and Wangguan Wetland Parks are much closer, and if you're lucky, you can catch a stunning sunset). Plus, it's very close to Kunming South Railway Station. If you need to catch a train from Kunming South on your return trip, staying here for a night is an absolute top choice—you get to check out the flower market and watch the sunset along the way!
