This was once the residence of Puyi, the last emperor, who served as a puppet of Manchukuo. The awkward fusion of Chinese, Western, and Japanese architectural styles—the dazzling crystal chandeliers of Tongde Hall, the secluded living spaces of Jixi Building, and the hidden traces of surveillance everywhere—all tell the story of that humiliating colonial era. Following our guide, we walked along every brick and tile, through courtyards and corridors, feeling both sorrow for the fate of the last emperor and a profound sense of remembering history and never forgetting national humiliation.
