The party starts on New Year’s Eve and it culminates with stunning fireworks displays at the stroke of midnight.

The Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration is one of the biggest festivals held in Singapore annually! Singapore is a multicultural society, and approximately 75.9% of the population are Singaporean Chinese😉. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, marks the start of the new year in the lunar calendar, and the first two days are designated as public holidays in Singapore. As the first day of Chinese New Year 2023 falls on a Sunday, the next working day (24 January 2023) will be an off-in-lieu Singapore public holidays 2023. This means that we have 4 days to celebrate Chinese New Year🧧!

Preparations for this big festive season often start 1 month ahead. During this period of time, families will be busy with spring cleaning and purchasing Chinese New Year snacks and goodies👀. Some delectable traditional treats in Singapore’s Chinese New Year celebrations are pineapple tarts, love letter biscuits and bak kwa (dried savoury sweetmeat). Hari Raya Haji, also known as Hari Raya Aidiladha or Eid al-Adha, is the second Islamic public holiday in Singapore. This festival is the “Festival of Sacrifice” as it commemorates Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God😳.   • Ghost Month: 16 August 2023 (Wednesday) to 14 September 2023 (Thursday)
The Hungry Ghost Festival is an important festival for the Singaporean Chinese community. Ghost Month refers to the 7th lunar month, and it is believed that this is the month when the Gates of Hell are opened. Deceased spirits would then return to the realm of the living, and people pay respect to them by presenting offerings and burning paper money. Such rituals are usually held on the 1st, 15th and last day of the 7th lunar month. Out of the three dates, the 15th day (30 August 2023) is believed to be the most important date.
There are many superstitions to take note of during Ghost Month. It is considered taboo to step on burnt paper money and other offerings. People also avoid swimming at night during Ghost Month. However, the Hungry Ghost Festival is not all scary. Getai, which refers to bustling live concerts, is held throughout Singapore during this month!

【5】Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. During this festive season, Chinatown will be presenting the Mid-Autumn Festival Light Up! Common activities for this day include going on strolls with lanterns and enjoying mooncakes.
