Zurich is world-famous as a city of global finance. Because of the many verdant trees on the banks of Lake Zurich and the Limmat River, it is also known as the "Garden City". Even though Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, it still exudes a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Grossmünster, the Fraumünster church, the Swiss National Museum, and the fine arts museum, the Kunsthaus Zürich speak to this city's enchanting humanistic culture. Bahnhofstrasse is the city’s main downtown shopping street and represents avant-garde fashion, with many shopping centers and high-end boutiques lined up on either side of the street. Heading south along Bahnhofstrasse, you will come to the wide Lake Zurich. During daylight hours, white swans and ducks can be seen floating on the lake. Wild and free, it is a harmonious scene to behold.

Zurich Food Guide

Zurich's food scene is celebrated for its exquisite Swiss wines, characterized by local varietals from vineyards around Lake Zurich, and its rich confectionery history, epitomized by world-renowned Swiss chocolate, which owes its smooth quality to local innovations like the conching process.

Zurich Transportation

Zurich's transportation infrastructure is well-developed, with Zurich Airport and the main train station, Zurich Hauptbahnhof, being the primary gateways for intercity and international travel. Zurich Airport (ZRH), also known as Kloten Airport, is the largest and busiest airport in Switzerland, It serves as a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and offers a wide range of domestic and international flights. To reach the city from Zurich Airport, passengers can take a train operated by Swiss Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) from Zürich Flughafen to Zürich HB. Trams and buses also provide connections to the city and surrounding areas. Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich HB), situated in the heart of the city, is one of the busiest railway stations in Europe and serves as a major railway hub. It connects various cities and countries. The station is a cultural landmark and includes a shopping mall called ShopVille. To reach Zurich HB from Zurich Airport, travelers can take a direct SBB train.

Zurich Where to Stay

Zurich is a city that offers a diverse range of accommodation options, with each district providing its own unique charm and characteristics. The city's well-connected public transportation system ensures that no matter where you choose to stay, the rich cultural and historical offerings of Zurich are easily accessible.

Zurich Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Zurich is during the summer months of June to August, when the city is vibrant with festivals and outdoor activities. This period is ideal for experiencing Zurich's lively cultural scene, including the ZürichArt Weekend and the Street Parade, as well as enjoying picnics in parks and alfresco dining. For winter sports enthusiasts, December to February offers Christmas markets, spa experiences, and skiing opportunities at nearby resorts like Atzmännig. Budget travelers and nature lovers will find March to May favorable, with the blooming of trees and the traditional spring festival of Sechseläuten. Foodies, hikers, and culture enthusiasts should consider visiting in September and October to enjoy the Long Night of the Museums, the Food Zürich festival, and the beautiful autumnal colors.

Zurich Travel Tips

1. Plan Your Visit to Uetliberg: If you plan to hike up Uetliberg, Zurich's local mountain, it's advisable to book your hiking trip in advance, especially during peak seasons, to avoid overcrowding and ensure a pleasant experience. Wear comfortable clothes and hiking boots, pack sunscreen and a hat, and start early to beat the crowds. Don't forget to bring a camera to capture the stunning views from the top. 2. Check Museum Opening Hours: Many museums in Zurich, such as the Swiss National Museum and Kunsthaus Zürich, are closed on Mondays. Always check the opening days and hours before planning your visit to avoid disappointment. 3. Mountain Weather Precautions: When hiking in nearby mountains, weather can change rapidly. Always check forecasts, inform someone of your plans, and carry appropriate gear, including warm clothing and sufficient water. Avoid walking alone and be cautious of dislodging rocks. Ensure your insurance covers mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation. 4. Respect Bike Lanes: Zurich has many dedicated bike lanes, marked with yellow lines and sometimes a red surface. Always respect these lanes and avoid walking or standing in them to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Zurich Useful Guide

Zurich's official language is German, specifically Swiss German or Swiss Standard German, which is distinct from standard German with unique vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Translation services and language apps are available for travelers, and English is commonly spoken, especially among the younger population. Multilingualism is prevalent due to Switzerland's four national languages and diverse linguistic regions. Effective communication can be aided by familiarizing oneself with basic Swiss German phrases and using non-verbal cues.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must carry a passport with an expiration date that meets the destination's requirements (usually valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends; please refer to the actual boarding information), your cruise boarding pass (e-ticket or printed copy), and any visas required by all countries/regions on your itinerary. Depending on your nationality, other identification documents (such as a residence card or national ID card) may also be required. Please confirm the final requirements with the relevant embassies or consulates and the cruise line before departure.
Modern large cruise ships are equipped with advanced stabilizers and are routed to avoid rough seas, meaning most passengers never experience noticeable seasickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider booking a cabin on the mid-to-lower decks where movement is minimal. Other helpful tips include packing motion sickness medication, wearing anti-nausea wristbands, and getting fresh air on open decks. Note: Medication availability at the onboard medical center varies, so please check with your specific cruise line.
The vast majority of cruises automatically charge a fixed service fee to your daily cruise card account. For specific rates and collection methods, please refer to the information published by the cruise line after boarding. This fee typically covers basic gratuities for room service, dining staff, and more. Unless you wish to tip extra for exceptional service, additional cash tips are not required. We recommend consulting the cruise line's official guidelines when booking or after boarding.
Most international cruise lines use the US Dollar as their onboard currency. Upon boarding, you will link a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) to your cruise card. The ship operates on a "cashless" system, meaning all onboard purchases (dining, drinks, shopping, service fees) are charged directly to your account and settled at the end of the trip. While you don't need large amounts of cash on board, we recommend bringing some small bills (USD or local currency) for minor expenses and tips at ports of call.
Usually, within an hour after leaving port, your phone will connect to a maritime roaming network, which carries extremely high call and data roaming charges (often exceeding US$ 5/minute). We strongly advise putting your phone in Airplane Mode and relying solely on the ship's Wi-Fi. Most ships offer paid Wi-Fi packages. Purchasing a voyage-long package is generally much more cost-effective than paying by the day. Some luxury cruise lines include basic Wi-Fi in your fare.
Every international cruise ship is equipped with a medical center staffed by at least one internationally certified doctor and nurse. They are fully capable of treating common illnesses (colds, gastroenteritis) and minor injuries. Please note: Onboard medical care is quite expensive, and the pharmacy has limited stock. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance with cruise medical coverage and packing an ample supply of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you regularly use.
After boarding, you must attend a mandatory safety drill (usually required to be completed within 24 hours). During the drill, you will hear the ship's dedicated alarm signal. Please immediately put on your life jacket (located in your cabin closet) and follow the evacuation route map on the back of your door to your designated assembly station. Please keep in mind: Do not use the elevators, follow the crew's instructions, and stay calm. Even if you have been on multiple cruises, you must participate in the drill on every new voyage. Please refer to the ship's on-site broadcasts and guidance for the specific signal and assembly location.
The night before disembarkation, affix luggage tags to all checked bags as instructed by the cruise operator and leave them at the marked zone outside your cabin. Do not pack items required for the next day such as daily wear, official documents and valuables into checked luggage. Retain your passport, room key and hand luggage with yourself. On disembark day, exit your cabin by the stated timing and proceed ashore in allocated groups per announcements. Avoid remaining inside the cabin. Inspect every drawer, closet and cabin safe thoroughly. Exact timings and baggage rules follow the cruise line’s Disembarkation Guide.

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

Paul Gauguin Cruises, the French Polynesia destination expert and winner of Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Award for "Best Small Cruise Ship," announced that the 330-passenger m/s Paul Gauguin has recently completed a seven-week refurbishment in Singapore. This comprehensive multi-million-dollar renovation features refreshed spatial designs, upgraded guest facilities, and sustainable technology enhancements to continuously elevate passengers' "seamless and carefree" cruise experience. Key highlights of the refurbishment include a modern makeover for the popular Le Grill restaurant, a redesigned pool deck with shaded cabana seating areas, four new connecting staterooms, updated soft furnishings throughout the ship, and sustainable technology upgrades. The redesign was led by globally renowned transportation design firm Stirling Design International, whose innovative approach perfectly aligns with Paul Gauguin Cruises' artistic ambiance and authentic exploration ethos. Interwoven latticework, canvas elements, and warm wood finishes harmonize beautifully with breathtaking tropical landscapes, showcasing a modern aesthetic that coexists with nature. Refurbishment highlights of m/s Paul Gauguin: Connecting Staterooms: Four new connecting staterooms have been added on Deck 7 to meet the growing demand for multigenerational (family) travel, complementing the highly successful "Moana Explorer Program" for children aged 6 to 15—a program developed in partnership with Te mana o te moana, the South Pacific's premier marine education and conservation foundation. Le Grill Restaurant Makeover: The open-air restaurant by the pool features a stylish, contemporary design with white wooden screens, ceramic tiles, soft oak furniture, and chic lighting, creating an elegant dining atmosphere for guests to enjoy the ship's renowned culinary offerings. Pool Deck Transformation: The pool deck now boasts new white canopies providing shade for cabana-style seating areas, while the pool's exterior is adorned with new mosaic tiles. Spacious white loungers surround the space, offering guests a perfect spot for relaxation. Sustainable Technology: The ship now features advanced heat recovery systems, high-efficiency chillers, and optimized electric motors to significantly reduce energy consumption. A new seawater treatment system produces fresh water onboard, while the Nordaq filtration system creates drinking water from seawater, helping eliminate plastic bottles and minimize single-use plastics. Waste management improvements include glass crushers and cardboard compactors for efficient recycling. Visual Upgrades: Paying homage to parent company PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP, the ship's funnel now displays PONANT's iconic "Three Sails" logo, crafted from polished steel with LED backlighting for striking nighttime visibility. Additionally, Paul Gauguin Cruises' "P-shaped emblem" is prominently positioned at the bow of Deck 8, while the sleek white hull incorporates modern gray accents. These designs reflect the shared values of the group's brands, embodying a commitment to authentic exploration and maritime spirit. The m/s Paul Gauguin returned to French Polynesia in May for year-round operations, continuing to offer its award-winning all-inclusive luxury cruises with 7- to 14-night island itineraries to the Society Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Cook Islands, and Marquesas Islands.
