Reviews: Odyssey of the Seas

Guest user2026-05-11

Regarding the cruise ship itself: lots of fun activities, performances vary in quality, and the food is decent. Accommodation: The ship is generally new, with 16 decks. I liked the observation elevator lobby. The balcony cabins are rather basic, suitable for two people; any more than that and it would be cramped. There's plenty of storage space and a small refrigerator, but no slippers, and the shampoo and conditioner are not great, so remember to bring your own. Activities: There are a lot of fun activities on the cruise ship. There are three swimming pools on the deck, a small water slide, and two hot tubs. The temperature is comfortable for playing in the sunshine. The North Star observation deck has free slots available on some days, but we didn't get to use it. The surf simulator is fun; the activities vary daily, so you need to queue according to the time slot. The prone version isn't too difficult, and the instructors provide basic guidance. The iFly skydiving simulator is fun; you can book a free one-minute trial, and you actually get to fly! If you want more, you can pay an extra $10 for a second minute on the spot. Rock climbing is fun, go for it! It's quite high, but you can climb to the top with a little effort. I liked the Plex amusement park. They change the exhibits every few hours. I liked the bumper cars and laser tag. You just need to queue for the bumper cars, but you need to book a session for laser tag. Volleyball, basketball, and badminton are also good. There are many video games nearby, but you have to pay to play. Shows: There are official shows every night at the Royal Theater, various types, including acrobatics, magic, song and dance, and concerts. The Spectrum Four is a must-see—a superhero musical with amazing special effects, super cool! Food: There are many restaurants on the ship; you can eat only the free ones. Breakfast: The buffet restaurant on deck 14 has a wide selection, but I really liked the Two70 Cafe on deck 5, where you can choose your own bagels and croissants. Lunch: On sea days, you can eat anywhere, upstairs and downstairs, at many buffet restaurants. Dinner: The main dining room is a must. You'll be assigned a fixed dining time and table number before boarding. It's a three-course Western-style à la carte meal, with a slightly different menu each day. Order as much as you like. The appetizers and main courses are decent, but the desserts are extremely sweet. Late-night snack: The pizzeria is open until late at night, so grab a couple of slices for a late-night snack. I didn't buy any beverage packs; I just ordered drinks at the restaurant when I felt like it. I brought a few cans of Coke with me, which I can enjoy on my room's balcony while enjoying the sea breeze. If you go sightseeing on a port day, be sure to return on time. I don't recommend the tours sold on board; they're extremely expensive. If you want to book a tour, look for other channels. One thing to note: If you book this cruise ticket through domestic channels, you cannot purchase any official pre-departure products in advance; you won't be able to enjoy any pre-departure discounts.

The cruise ship offered comprehensive and attentive service, with courteous and enthusiastic staff. A variety of fun activities were available on board, including table tennis and beanbag toss. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, the itinerary was changed, and we didn't visit Cozumel, Mexico. Instead, we went to Nassau, the capital and largest city of the Bahamas. Nassau is surrounded by clear, azure waters, with a long, winding coastline and fine white sand beaches. Strolling along the beach, the sea breeze was refreshing and peaceful, leaving me carefree and without a worry in the world. The regret of not visiting Mexico was also gone 😌. The cruise ship offered a variety of dining options, especially suitable for those who enjoy Western cuisine and desserts.

Thanks to all the friends in the service team for every greeting, every smile, and considerate service they provide us all along. Traveling with Queen Victoria makes this summer special to me, and I will always cherish and miss it. Ihope all the wishes we made that night watching the meteor shower come true and the crew’s upcoming journey safe and pleasant. Looking forward to meet Cunard very soon.

The Majestic Princess cruise ship was designed specifically for the Chinese market. It features bilingual (Chinese and English) signage and a fully transparent ocean-view walkway, unlike other Princess cruise ships. This British Isles cruise was quite unique, offering pastoral scenery, ancient churches, and small towns. It provided an opportunity to learn about British history and development. The onboard buffet offered a variety of pastries, rice dishes, and other good ingredients. The evening shows were also excellent, almost always sold out. Shore excursions were plentiful, with various options available. However, cruise tickets are relatively expensive. Independent travel is recommended if possible.

First, the pros: this Norwegian Cruise Line ship was slightly newer, the food was relatively better, the three ports of call were quite interesting, the airport shuttle service was good, and the Black driver who took us to the airport was particularly responsible. The entertainment was rather monotonous; the shows in the theaters and all the bars were almost entirely rock music, unchanging, and we barely saw any performances after a week.

New York Must-see Attractions

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known as The Met, is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park, in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It’s a must-visit NYC attraction with over two million works of art spanning 5,000 years, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to modern masterpieces. With highlights like the American Wing, the Temple of Dendur, and rotating shows, it’s an essential stop to dive into art, history, and culture in one of the world’s greatest museums. It’s open Thursday through Tuesday, but closed on Wednesdays. Best visited weekday mornings to avoid crowds. Purchase tickets online and consider a guided highlights tour for first-time visitors. The rooftop garden (open May-October) offers stunning Central Park views and rotating art installations.

New York Food Guide

A proper New York slice is a precise art: thin, foldable, with a perfect ratio of tangy sauce to cheese. The slice-folding technique isn't just tradition – it's a practical necessity developed by New Yorkers eating on the go. Never use a knife and fork (unless you want locals to roll their eyes), and don't be afraid of the oil – a good slice should require a slight lean forward, known as the "New York fold." For the quintessential New York slice experience, head to Joe's Pizza in Greenwich Village, where the recipe hasn't changed since 1975, or brave the lines at Lombardi's, America's first pizzeria.

Spring (May-June): Mild weather, outdoor events Fall (September-November): Perfect weather, lots of cultural events December: Holiday decorations and activities, shopping Value Season (January-April) - Hotel rates lower - Shorter attraction lines - Restaurant Week occurs - Broadway Week discounts

New York Travel Tips

1. Book Shows and Museums Smart Broadway runs Tuesday to Sunday—most shows dim on Mondays—so plan around that, booking popular performances weeks ahead since weekends vanish fast. Hit TKTS booths in Times Square or Lincoln Center for same-day discounted tickets if you’re last-minute. Museums often offer free or pay-what-you-wish days—check schedules to dodge full admission costs. 2. Move Like a Local New York thrives on speed—stride with purpose, prep your MetroCard before the turnstile, and step aside to check maps or phones. Respect personal space on subways—no bumping or staring—or expect a sharp glance; it’s the unspoken city code for smooth sailing.  3. Tip Generously with Precision Tipping’s non-negotiable here—servers, bartenders, and drivers count on it. Aim for 18-20% at restaurants (15% minimum), $1-2 per drink at bars ($2-3 for complex cocktails), 15-20% for taxis, and $1-2 per bag for hotel porters. Check bills for auto-added gratuity with groups of 6 or more—don’t double-tip by mistake.   4. Dodge Street Scams Tourist zones—like near the big tower or ferry docks—teem with hustlers pushing fake tickets or “free” photo ops with costumed characters who’ll demand cash after. Stick to crossbody bags, keep valuables locked down, and brush off strangers with a firm “no thanks”—NYC’s safe if you stay sharp.  5. Ride the Subway Savvy Subways outpace cabs in rush hours—skip empty cars if others are packed, as they might stink or be broken. For ride-shares, double-check driver and car details before hopping in; it’s the fastest way to glide through the grid when traffic snarls.  6. Prep for Weather Swings NYC’s skies flip fast—summer’s muggy heat meets icy indoor AC, while winter’s chill bites harder between skyscrapers. Pack a light layer year-round and a scarf or hat when it’s cold; locals roll with the shifts, and you’ll dodge the shock too.  7. Carry Cash for Small Spots Big city or not, plenty of bodegas and eateries go cash-only or set card minimums—stash some bills for quick buys. International cards might flop at random ATMs—hit major banks instead; chip-less cards or big spends could need ID at some joints too.  8. Snap Photos with Care Outdoor icons and streets are fair game for pics, but indoor spots like museums often ban flash or restrict special exhibits—check signs. Ask street performers or strangers before framing them in your shot; it’s courtesy that keeps the vibe right.  9. Abide by Drinking & Smoking Rules No drinking booze in parks, on beaches, or streets unless it’s a licensed bash—cops don’t play. Smoking’s out in public zones like plazas and parks, plus near building doors—step away or face a fine; it’s the city’s tight leash on open spaces.  10. Time Your Dining Right Hot eateries skip reservations, with peak dinner hours packing long lines—go early or late to slip in easier. Upscale spots might turn away sneakers or shorts, and big groups need a heads-up call for special rules or added tips; plan it to eat like a pro.  11. Show Your Passport for a Discount Flash your passport at big stores as an international visitor for tax breaks or discounts—worth the ask. Sunday hours can shrink, and sample sales enforce bag or try-on limits—check times and rules ahead to snag the best deals.  12. Know Your Help Lines Stash NYC311 for city help and nearby hospital numbers in your phone—emergencies hit fast. 24-hour pharmacies stock basics like meds or bandages, and cops in tourist zones often point you the right way if you’re lost—just ask.  13. Dodge Gridlock Traps Traffic jams choke NYC—skip cabs for subways or buses in peak hours, and watch for congestion pricing zones downtown that ding drivers extra. Walk or bike if it’s close; the city’s grid flows better when you ditch the wheels.

New York Useful Guide

English is the primary language, but NYC is highly multilingual. Essential NYC terminology: The Train - Subway Uptown/Downtown - Northbound/Southbound Crosstown -  East-West travel The City - Manhattan specifically Outer Boroughs - Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island Midtown - 34th-59th Streets Bodega - Corner store/deli Regular coffee - Coffee with milk and sugar

Frequently Asked Questions

You must carry a passport with an expiration date that meets the destination's requirements (usually valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends; please refer to the actual boarding information), your cruise boarding pass (e-ticket or printed copy), and any visas required by all countries/regions on your itinerary. Depending on your nationality, other identification documents (such as a residence card or national ID card) may also be required. Please confirm the final requirements with the relevant embassies or consulates and the cruise line before departure.
Modern large cruise ships are equipped with advanced stabilizers and are routed to avoid rough seas, meaning most passengers never experience noticeable seasickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider booking a cabin on the mid-to-lower decks where movement is minimal. Other helpful tips include packing motion sickness medication, wearing anti-nausea wristbands, and getting fresh air on open decks. Note: Medication availability at the onboard medical center varies, so please check with your specific cruise line.
The vast majority of cruises automatically charge a fixed service fee to your daily cruise card account. For specific rates and collection methods, please refer to the information published by the cruise line after boarding. This fee typically covers basic gratuities for room service, dining staff, and more. Unless you wish to tip extra for exceptional service, additional cash tips are not required. We recommend consulting the cruise line's official guidelines when booking or after boarding.
Most international cruise lines use the US Dollar as their onboard currency. Upon boarding, you will link a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) to your cruise card. The ship operates on a "cashless" system, meaning all onboard purchases (dining, drinks, shopping, service fees) are charged directly to your account and settled at the end of the trip. While you don't need large amounts of cash on board, we recommend bringing some small bills (USD or local currency) for minor expenses and tips at ports of call.
Usually, within an hour after leaving port, your phone will connect to a maritime roaming network, which carries extremely high call and data roaming charges (often exceeding US$ 5/minute). We strongly advise putting your phone in Airplane Mode and relying solely on the ship's Wi-Fi. Most ships offer paid Wi-Fi packages. Purchasing a voyage-long package is generally much more cost-effective than paying by the day. Some luxury cruise lines include basic Wi-Fi in your fare.
Every international cruise ship is equipped with a medical center staffed by at least one internationally certified doctor and nurse. They are fully capable of treating common illnesses (colds, gastroenteritis) and minor injuries. Please note: Onboard medical care is quite expensive, and the pharmacy has limited stock. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance with cruise medical coverage and packing an ample supply of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you regularly use.
After boarding, you must attend a mandatory safety drill (usually required to be completed within 24 hours). During the drill, you will hear the ship's dedicated alarm signal. Please immediately put on your life jacket (located in your cabin closet) and follow the evacuation route map on the back of your door to your designated assembly station. Please keep in mind: Do not use the elevators, follow the crew's instructions, and stay calm. Even if you have been on multiple cruises, you must participate in the drill on every new voyage. Please refer to the ship's on-site broadcasts and guidance for the specific signal and assembly location.
The night before disembarkation, affix luggage tags to all checked bags as instructed by the cruise operator and leave them at the marked zone outside your cabin. Do not pack items required for the next day such as daily wear, official documents and valuables into checked luggage. Retain your passport, room key and hand luggage with yourself. On disembark day, exit your cabin by the stated timing and proceed ashore in allocated groups per announcements. Avoid remaining inside the cabin. Inspect every drawer, closet and cabin safe thoroughly. Exact timings and baggage rules follow the cruise line’s Disembarkation Guide.

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

The m/s Paul Gauguin has completed its multi-million-dollar refurbishment

Paul Gauguin Cruises, the French Polynesia destination expert and winner of Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Award for "Best Small Cruise Ship," announced that the 330-passenger m/s Paul Gauguin has recently completed a seven-week refurbishment in Singapore. This comprehensive multi-million-dollar renovation features refreshed spatial designs, upgraded guest facilities, and sustainable technology enhancements to continuously elevate passengers' "seamless and carefree" cruise experience. Key highlights of the refurbishment include a modern makeover for the popular Le Grill restaurant, a redesigned pool deck with shaded cabana seating areas, four new connecting staterooms, updated soft furnishings throughout the ship, and sustainable technology upgrades. The redesign was led by globally renowned transportation design firm Stirling Design International, whose innovative approach perfectly aligns with Paul Gauguin Cruises' artistic ambiance and authentic exploration ethos. Interwoven latticework, canvas elements, and warm wood finishes harmonize beautifully with breathtaking tropical landscapes, showcasing a modern aesthetic that coexists with nature. Refurbishment highlights of m/s Paul Gauguin: Connecting Staterooms: Four new connecting staterooms have been added on Deck 7 to meet the growing demand for multigenerational (family) travel, complementing the highly successful "Moana Explorer Program" for children aged 6 to 15—a program developed in partnership with Te mana o te moana, the South Pacific's premier marine education and conservation foundation. Le Grill Restaurant Makeover: The open-air restaurant by the pool features a stylish, contemporary design with white wooden screens, ceramic tiles, soft oak furniture, and chic lighting, creating an elegant dining atmosphere for guests to enjoy the ship's renowned culinary offerings. Pool Deck Transformation: The pool deck now boasts new white canopies providing shade for cabana-style seating areas, while the pool's exterior is adorned with new mosaic tiles. Spacious white loungers surround the space, offering guests a perfect spot for relaxation. Sustainable Technology: The ship now features advanced heat recovery systems, high-efficiency chillers, and optimized electric motors to significantly reduce energy consumption. A new seawater treatment system produces fresh water onboard, while the Nordaq filtration system creates drinking water from seawater, helping eliminate plastic bottles and minimize single-use plastics. Waste management improvements include glass crushers and cardboard compactors for efficient recycling. Visual Upgrades: Paying homage to parent company PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP, the ship's funnel now displays PONANT's iconic "Three Sails" logo, crafted from polished steel with LED backlighting for striking nighttime visibility. Additionally, Paul Gauguin Cruises' "P-shaped emblem" is prominently positioned at the bow of Deck 8, while the sleek white hull incorporates modern gray accents. These designs reflect the shared values of the group's brands, embodying a commitment to authentic exploration and maritime spirit. The m/s Paul Gauguin returned to French Polynesia in May for year-round operations, continuing to offer its award-winning all-inclusive luxury cruises with 7- to 14-night island itineraries to the Society Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Cook Islands, and Marquesas Islands.
