The room was great, definitely on par with a 5-star hotel in China. They even had Chinese power strips in the room, so no need for an adapter, which was super convenient. I highly recommend this hotel, it's a really good one.

Room is clean and well equipped. Free snack or iced tea available at a lobby. Famous restaurant is on the ground floor with 15% discount. However it opens late so not good for breakfast(or maybe closed due to holiday) nearby nothing. Only good if you have a car to explore.

The location is excellent, just a 5-minute walk from Gaya Street and a 5-minute walk from the durian market (the durian night market is only open on weekends and gets really lively at night – remember to bargain!).
Drawbacks: The room decor is a bit dated (though still clean); the floor-to-ceiling glass door doesn't open at all, so there's no ventilation (see picture 1). For rooms on the 5th floor and below, please pay special attention: #If you plan to stay here, be sure to request a room with an openable window at the front desk.

The room was old, very small, and the soundproofing was terrible, making it hard to sleep. On top of that, the window couldn't be opened, leading to a strong, unpleasant musty smell inside. They don't provide bottled water; you have to get it yourself from the hallway. If these things bother you, think twice before booking.

Check-in was quick and easy. The room was quite spacious and the decor felt fresh and new. The elevators were fast, so there was hardly any waiting. We stayed for three days, and one morning there was a bit of a scare: at around 5 AM, the room's speaker blared a fire alarm. It was pretty terrifying. For the next five minutes, all they said was that they were investigating the cause, without actually confirming it was clear, which made it hard to relax and sleep afterward. I promptly contacted Trip.com customer service, who helped me inquire about the cause – their service was really good. The breakfast selection was also quite varied; you could definitely get your fill. I made sure to try the Nyonya kueh every day – highly recommend it!

Environment: Great, very convenient.
Service: Pretty good.
The hotel location is excellent, very close to Tanjung Aru Beach. It's super convenient for watching one of the world's top 3 sunset views. Dining options nearby are plentiful, and it's also close to the shopping district, right in the city center.
All staff are helpful and friendly. location ok saya suka hotel ni since 2014 xsilap stay sini. cuma kena pantau sikit housekeeping kadang2 xtukar cadar/selimut and always lupa simpan towel dalam bilik selalu takdah towel.:

The room was really clean, I forgot to take pictures. It was quiet at night and felt very safe. There are many restaurants and convenience stores downstairs. It's very close to Gaya Street and the DBKK jetty, about a 5-minute taxi ride. Every room has a floor-to-ceiling window with direct views of the jetty and the sea, as shown in the pictures – both the daytime views and the sunset are beautiful. Kota Kinabalu is the most convenient and comfortable city I've visited so far; it's very beautiful and chill. The host was also very nice and patient in answering my questions. This is the best and most worthwhile hotel I've ever picked, the value for money is truly unbeatable!

AAnonymous UserI recommend booking directly on the Shangri-La official website, as this site is just an agent and not a partnership between Trip.com and Shangri-La. The room view I was given was particularly bad, and I booked this hotel specifically to watch the sunset. The front desk was very slow; I had to wait a long time to check in. Even though it was only 15 minutes before 3 PM, they wouldn't give me the room key early; I had to wait until after 3 PM. When I opened the door to my room, there was a staff member inside, which really startled me! She had closed the door and was doing something in the room; you wouldn't have known anyone was in there if the door hadn't been opened. She left only after she saw us enter the room. The breakfast, however, was plentiful and the most satisfying part of my stay. I hope the hotel improves its service.
KKT5009Don't book during the rainy season, don't book during the rainy season, don't book during the rainy season. It's from Sep to Feb. I said 3 times it's important if you don't wanna ruin your holiday. We booked 3D2N in mid Sep. Our holiday turned out to be a staycation nightmare in the resort. We can't do all the water activities neither the jungle trekking. The water heater in our room is not working, we have to shower with shivering cold water in this kind of weather. Lots of big size anta inside the room crawling from the bathroom to the bedroom. Make sure you cleaned up for your snacks and drinks, tie up the garbage bag if you don't want these insects to come to your bed, There is also a landslide happening on our first night, luckily we are not affected as we stayed in the ocean villa. There is only one restaurant in this resort, food prices are the same as SG restaurant pricing, no cheap option here. In room dining needs to pay RM25 extra. Staff service is good but this cannot cover the several run down part of the resort.
GGuest UserVery outdated design hotel but still comfortable to stay..the centralized aircond is not cold enough that we had to switch on the fan which was too windy because the fan speed not ajustable....the breakfast has lot variety but doesnt taste great...overall good stay.
NNero0919Perfect Getaway!
This hotel on Mantanani Island, Kota Kinabalu, is an absolute gem! It's simply divine!
I specifically came to Kota Kinabalu for Mantanani Island's crystal-clear waters, and I chose the Mantanani Hotel in advance. After staying there, I just had to give it five stars!
The location is absolutely stunning. Step out, and you're on a soft, white sand beach. Open the balcony door, and you're greeted by the jelly-blue ocean. Waking up to the sound of waves every day was incredibly therapeutic. We booked a sea-view room; it was clean and spacious, the mattress had just the right firmness, and the shower water pressure was perfectly stable. There was no cramped feeling, which can often be the case with island hotels.
I have to praise the service! The front desk staff were incredibly enthusiastic. They pre-arranged our island transfers and even proactively recommended snorkeling spots and delicious local snacks. They were always responsive and efficient. The hotel breakfast was also a pleasant surprise – freshly baked waffles with fresh mango, and freshly made Teh Tarik. The taste was absolutely spot on.
In the afternoon, I relaxed on a hotel beach chair, enjoying the sea breeze, and in the evening, I had a barbecue at the hotel restaurant under the stars. The pace was wonderfully slow and comfortable – exactly the island vacation vibe I was looking for. If you're coming to Mantanani Island, I honestly recommend staying here. The experience is so much better than a day trip. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit to Kota Kinabalu!
Are you planning a trip to Mantanani Island soon? Would you like me to write another short review in a different style, suitable for social media?
NNicola1974The hotel and grounds are stunning! Beautiful pools and nice beach. The hotel room (Garden superior) was nice- with a big balcony. Water, coffee, insect repellant etc was refilled daily which was a nice touch. Daily cleaning was wonderful. The breakfast was perfect - Western and local choices- but trying to get coffee was terrible- long queues and unreliable coffee machines. Most days I skipped it and bought coffee from the pool bar. Happy hour 4-6pm daily is great with regular entertainment- fire shows and tribal dancing. Bar prices are obviously very high - £45 for a bottle of cheap wine. The biggest problem with this hotel is very slow service (hard working staff but not enough to serve the guests) The staff work super long hours so I felt bad complaining when I was waiting 45 mins for drinks each day. Also, all the restaurants stop serving food around 9.30pm then everywhere closes around 10.30pm which means the evenings can be quite boring- especially when there’s nowhere else to go as the hotel is far from anywhere. The spa is overpriced but I enjoyed my facial and hot oil treatment. My last gripe is the hotel day trips- absolutely appalling. The hotel is affiliated with Sabah travel company- poor communication, poor service, hugely overpriced and generally very bad. I recommend booking day trips through Trip.com instead of through the hotel. Allen the hotel supervisor was amazing trying to sort out the fiasco and I’m grateful- but I wasn’t offered a refund or compensation which is disappointing. I wanted to leave a poor review on the Sabah Travel’s website but they removed my booking so it wasn’t possible. I’d stay at this hotel again as the price is fairly reasonable but it def falls below the usual Shangri-la standards.

SSarah F. AdamI recently stayed at Nexus Resort Karambunai and had a wonderful experience. The room was nice, spacious, and very clean, with a beautiful view overlooking the sea. One of the highlights of the stay was definitely the stunning sunset— absolutely breathtaking.
The resort also has a lovely white sandy beach with crystal clear water, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. Although the resort is a bit remote, about 14km from Kota Kinabalu city, there are plenty of fun activities to keep everyone entertained. We enjoyed kayaking during sunset, cycling around the resort, and playing tennis and table tennis. There’s also a playground and VR games for the kids, which made it very family-friendly.
Another great convenience is the free shuttle bus provided to the town, making it easier for guests to explore the city. Overall, Nexus Resort Karambunai is a great getaway for families, couples, or anyone looking for a relaxing beach vacation.
AAlex_CheckInGot you — I’ll keep it balanced and honest, like a real guest who had both good and not-so-good moments.

I recently stayed at Lintas Platinum Hotel for 5 days, and overall it was a decent stay with a few hiccups along the way.
On the first day, check-in was smooth, but unfortunately the first room assigned to me had no air-conditioning and no power. After informing the staff, they arranged a room change. The switch was handled fairly quickly, which I appreciated, and the new room was functioning properly.
For the rest of the stay, the room was generally comfortable. The bed was good, WiFi was stable, and air-conditioning worked well (very important in Kota Kinabalu’s weather). Daily housekeeping ensured that water bottles and basic amenities were replenished consistently, which I appreciated.
However, there were a few issues during the stay. For the last few days, the bathroom phone kept ringing every evening around 6:29pm. I was quite busy in the mornings and only managed to report it on the last day. The staff checked but couldn’t find any issue. It was a bit strange and slightly disturbing, though thankfully it didn’t escalate beyond that.
I also noticed that the towels provided were a bit old, and the housekeeping floor cleanliness could be improved. While the room was generally maintained, the floor didn’t always feel properly cleaned.
That said, the staff were polite and helpful throughout my stay. Despite a few inconveniences, the overall experience was still reasonably comfortable. With some improvements in maintenance and housekeeping quality control, the hotel could definitely provide a much better experience.
Overall, a decent stay with room for improvement.
