Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi is one of the most active active volcanoes in the world. It towers into the sky at 2,911 meters above sea level and overlooks Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Prambanan. The massive volcano is a huge and disturbing threat to thousands of people nearby. The volcano has erupted dozens of times over the past century, most recently in 2006. The eruption of Mount Merapi brought endless disasters to Yogyakarta. Borobudur and Prambanan were not destroyed by man-made damage or erosion of the years, but were swallowed by the volcano. However, frequent volcanic eruptions did not stop people from continuing to live in the mountains. The population density here is 690 people per square kilometer, and there are hundreds of small towns on Mount Merapi. Among them, the small town of Kaliurang is a settlement close to Mount Merapi. Several hotels in the town organize volcano tours. Some shop owners know the volcano well, and some have terraces with mountain views.
