Solo trekking through the Tengger Desert in Inner Mongolia. This was a surreal, unreaĺ, immensely difficult task but remains one of my proudest accomplishments to date
Located in the far Northwest of China the Tengger Desert is a vast empty area of wilderness there is nothing around except for desolate sand. However this doesn't mean it's without charm. It's actually nice in it's own way. With a real sense of nature. There is beauty here too with the sand dunes providing excellent backgrounds to the horizon.
Challenge yourself to a once in a lifetime experience and something you'll never forget

Swan lake - red lake (Tengger desert tour)
Our 3day Tengger desert tour started from Yinchuan, the red lake had to be it's superhighlight😊
Well, you can compare real pictures (August) with the first one from the drone the tour guide shared (captured somewhen in spring) 😁
Still it was a superhighlight, though a bit (MUCH🤭) smaller than expected and overadvertised.
The stop at the lake was a few hours (we had more time, as we rented camels to catch up with the rest of the group)
The water and surface were extremely hot 🔥
Still recommend to have this great experience: not so many red lakes on the planet

In the Tengger Desert, in addition to the Moon Lake and Swan Lake, which everyone knows, there is also a lake. This is a relatively original scenic spot. When it is not the peak season, there are no ones. The car is in the desert, it feels great, the lake should be a saline-alkali lake, and the blue sky and white clouds reflect the beauty of the lake. The lake is in a small basin in the desert, where a small ecosystem is embarked, and the feeling of the wetlands is worth a visit.

I came to Minqin Desert Sculpture Park and saw the desert for the first time. Although the sand is very thick, I am very happy to see such a scene. Later, I went to the Desert TUV in the Tengger Desert. I felt like I was riding a roller coaster. I was responsible for the screaming, because I always felt that the car was going to fall, but it didnt fall. In fact, the ability of this car to catch sand is very good. Strong, don't worry at all. Unexpectedly, on the way back, I saw the "Desert in the Desert" crew shooting in the desert. It was very interesting to take a look at the plane.

The vast and magnificent Tengger Desert
The Tengger Desert is located in the southwestern part of Alxa Left Banner in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the central border of Gansu Province. It stretches beyond the Great Wall to the south, reaches Helan Mountain to the east, and extends to the Yabulai Mountains to the west, making it the fourth largest desert in China. The blue sky, white clouds, and yellow sand create a naturally beautiful color palette!
In the midst of the desert, the grandeur and vastness of the land are even more apparent. The yellow desert merges with the blue sky, endless and boundless. The sand dunes, soft and fine, offer a unique sensation to the eyes!
In the barren desert, as far as the eye can see, there is only sand. But occasionally, a plant or a withered tree appears, bringing a different landscape to the vast desert!
The undulating sand dunes of the desert appear especially smooth, and their sleek surface makes one reluctant to step on them, wishing to preserve this moment of beauty.
The sky is dotted with clouds that look like cotton candy. Standing in the desert, these clouds seem within reach, yet they also appear to be slowly pressing down!
The Tengger Desert contains as many as 422 lakes and basins, most of which are grass lakes without visible water. The lake basins in the Tengger Desert have abundant light and heat, better water conditions, and rich groundwater, with a depth of 1-2 meters, forming oases in the desert.
The stunning secret of the Tengger Desert: Lake Ulan, shaped like a 'heart', seems to be throbbing on the surface of the earth.
A fiery red is the deepest impression one gets when first seeing Lake Ulan, making one marvel at the incredible magic of nature!
'The solitary smoke in the vast desert rises straight, and the long river sets with a round sun,' the sunset in the desert is breathtakingly beautiful, reminding one of this verse by the poet Wang Wei, and such a scene truly inspires endless admiration!

Not Egypt! The sky-like Alxa! Searching for the lost temple in the desert
The sand is free🏜️
The wind is free🌪
I am free too👻
So today, I let myself be free𓀌
Freedom taken too far🔥
I originally planned to go to the Tengger Desert research base
Heading for those few stones🏰
Unexpectedly, in Alxa Left Banner, Tengger Desert
I discovered the lost temple🏛
And the Sea God Trident of Tang San🔱
It is said to have been built during Jackie Chan's movie shooting
It has been abandoned for many years
Occasionally, pieces of wall would fall off
Everyone must pay attention to safety⛑
There is almost no introduction about this place on the internet🈚
The approximate location is at📍
Between Alxa Dream Aviation Culture Co., Ltd. & Camel Lake
Camel Lake is not positioned on the map
I marked a map at the end🗺️
If you drive by yourself, you must choose an off-road vehicle🚜
Otherwise, getting stuck could cost 300-500 for a tow
And the signal in the desert is not very good📶
Otherwise, it's better to honestly find a guide from Wuhu Cross

Experience the 'Heart of the Earth'—the Five Lakes Crossing
Alxa's Five Lakes Crossing includes camping in the Ulan Lake Desert.
Tengger Desert🏜️ Five Lakes Crossing, unlock a new experience✨
🛣️Recommended route: Swan Lake→Emerald Lake→Ulan Lake→Camel Lake, especially the first two, with deserts and lakeside grasslands, are particularly photogenic and easy to get good shots!
Besides the lakes, there are also the sprawling deserts, and an abandoned film and television city that is worth a visit!
⚠️Precautions
①Be sure to take motion sickness medicine in advance, the excitement is only felt after the experience, it's quite dizzying, and many people are forced to stop the car several times to recover.
②Pay attention to sun protection! It's very hot, and the sandstorms are quite strong.
③There are large and small circles for the Five Lakes Crossing, if you get severely motion sick, it is recommended to experience the small circle, but the large circle has richer scenery.
📸Photography
Wear solid-colored clothes, dresses are more suitable, and make for better photos. The wind is strong, so bring sunglasses and a hat to block the wind, and you'll look good in photos too!
🍛Cuisine
Recommended is a restaurant in Alxa Left Banner: Iron Hat Barbecue.
It's particularly novel and delicious, worth recommending!
In the desert, in the wild, as the sky gradually darkens🌌 everything becomes insignificant, and all you want is to return to nature, to freedom...

Listed multiple times in 'National Geographic', here one searches for the heart of the earth
Listed multiple times by 'Chinese National Geographic', this kingdom of sand and water interwoven is the truest form of nature, where the ever-living lakes and the barren desert coexist in harmony. Deep in the desert, there beats a natural 'heart of the earth'.
In Mongolian, 'Tengger' means 'sky', describing the desert as 'high and vast like the sky'.
The local herders say: 'Climbing Tengger, you are three feet three inches from the sky.' They hold Tengger Desert in great awe, yet they are deeply attached to it.
【Suggested Itinerary】
Yinchuan → Swan Lake → Wulan Lake → Camel Lake → Liuchi Lake → Guitar Lake - Dream Desert Highway - Starting Point - Yinchuan.
What to shoot in Tengger?
【Attractions Introduction】
✅Wulan Lake: There are no people or signals here, and after crossing countless sand dunes, you will see a fiery red that boils on the surface, like the pulsating heartbeat of the earth. This 'heart of the earth' is called Wulan Lake.
✅Swan Lake: Every year in March-April and September-October, various migratory birds stop here, including white swans, wild ducks, grey cranes, and mallards, among over a hundred species. The lake and sand create a scene of ducks and geese playing, full of life.
✅Camel Lake: The color of the lake water here is enough to cure all your unhappiness, and there are many cattle and sheep freely grazing by the lake~
✅Liuchi Lake: This is a natural pasture, and taking photos with the cattle and sheep here is a good choice.
✅Guitar Lake: The lake is shaped strikingly like a guitar, one cannot help but admire the craftsmanship of nature.
【Food & Accommodation】
The beef and mutton from the Tengger Desert are very famous.
It is recommended to stay at a camping base in the desert, where on clear nights you can also see a sky full of stars~
【Precautions】
During desert crossings, there is a lot of wind and sand, so bring proper protection gear~
It is recommended to bring a drone, otherwise, you cannot appreciate the true beauty of the lakes.
There are many lakes scattered throughout Tengger, if you have time, you can slowly tour them.
Wear mid-top, hole-free hiking shoes to avoid sand getting into your shoes, and prepare a pair of sand covers.
Desert hiking has strong ultraviolet radiation, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat) is essential.
For outdoor routes, ensure sufficient logistical support.

Tengger Desert | Five Lakes Crossing Hiking Guide
Disconnect from the city, accompany with the wind and sand
🚄Transportation:
We took a high-speed train from Chengdu to Yinchuan, and then joined a group departing from Yinchuan
1️⃣On the first day, we left Yinchuan at 8:30 in the morning, took a bus for 3 hours to the entrance of Tonggutaoer Swan Lake. Then we started hiking, about 12 kilometers of desert road, and camped near Swan Lake at night to rest
2️⃣On the second day, we broke camp and set off after 6 in the morning. We walked about 25 kilometers, passing by Wulan Lake and Suhai Lake, and camped near Sun Lake. Teammates who couldn't walk could take the supply vehicle directly to the campsite
3️⃣On the third day, it was the last 13 kilometers, walking to the Moon Lake transfer station, and then we completed this desert hiking trip
🎒Equipment to carry:
Power bank (no signal and no power source in the desert)
Tent and sleeping bag (will be placed on the supply vehicle)
Windbreaker (better with a fleece liner, the temperature difference in the desert is big, and it's very cold at night)
High-top hiking boots (to prevent spraining ankles)
Definitely prepare gaiters (otherwise sand will get into your shoes)
And the necessary hiking poles
🌞Sun protection items: Sun hat, sun protection mask, sunglasses, half-finger gloves (to prevent chafing from hiking poles), lip balm and moisturizing cream (essential, the desert is too dry)
Other than that, bring pretty dresses or clothes, there is time to change clothes and take photos at the campsite, the desert sunset is absolutely beautiful!

The Tengger Desert spans the endless desolation in search of the heart of the Earth
The Tengger Desert💝 spans the endless desolation in search of the heart of the Earth.
👉In one's lifetime, one must visit the Tengger Desert at least once, to look up at the vast stars, to look down at the wilderness of the desert, to use the ground as a bed and the sky as a blanket, to witness the grandeur of mountains and rivers that rival the seas✨
🏜Tengger Desert
📍Located in the southwest of Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the central border of Gansu Province, it crosses the Great Wall to the south, reaches Helan Mountain to the east, and extends to Yabulai Mountain to the west. Covering an area of about 30,000 square kilometers, with an altitude of about 1200-1400 meters, it is the fourth largest desert in China. Inside the desert, sand dunes, lake basins, salt marshes, grass beaches, mountains, and plains are interspersed, and the vast flowing sands are like the boundless sky~
👏Classic route:
The route passes through Swan Lake, Wulan Lake, Suhaitu Lake, Sun Lake, and offers a distant view of Moon Lake, with numerous oases
✅Swan Lake
A tranquil and serene desert lake nestled among the golden sandy sea like the sky above, it is also a home for migratory birds in the desert, with various migratory birds stopping here in March-April and September-October each year
✅Wulan Lake
Hidden in the northern frontier of the desert, the 'heart of the Earth,' a string of pearl-like red lakes, with wine-red spots scattered among them, exuding an irresistible temptation~
✅Suhaitu Lake
About 16 kilometers away from Wulan Lake, today's Suhaitu Lake is nearly dried up, leaving only white salt alkali, sparse green vegetation, and an endless expanse of yellow sand, desolate and quiet
✅Sun Lake
The only freshwater lake in the Hoh Xil region, with white salt alkali outlining and yellow lake water filling, forms a peculiar abstract pattern
✅Moon Lake
True to its name, the lake's surface resembles the shape of the moon, a crescent bay deep in the desert~

Zhongwei Tengger Desert Travel Guide
Zhongwei Tengger Desert Travel Guide
Transportation Section
Starting from Lanzhou West, you can take a high-speed train directly to Zhongwei South, which only takes 2 hours, making the journey easy and convenient. After arriving in Zhongwei, it is recommended to choose public transportation or regular taxis within the city to avoid being led by taxi drivers to places with kickbacks. To get to the Tengger Desert, the taxi fare is about 70-80 yuan, but if you contact the accommodation provider in advance, you can often enjoy free shuttle services, saving a considerable amount on transportation costs.
Tourism Section
Shapotou is a must-visit destination with a variety of activities, and it is more cost-effective to choose a package. Speedboat rides are thrilling, but sheepskin rafts are not suitable for families with small children due to the large waves. There is no need to bring your own sand sliding equipment, as accommodation providers often provide or rent them. In addition, don't miss the bonfire parties and fireworks shows at the camping sites at night.
Food and Accommodation Section
It is recommended to go to 'Xiangyang Street' to taste local delicacies, with a street full of bars and barbecues offering a variety of flavors. In terms of accommodation, if you are with children, it is advisable to choose a sand view room with a private bathroom for convenience. Contacting the accommodation provider in advance not only allows you to negotiate free shuttle services but may also result in other discounts. The restaurant at the 'Shaliwa' campsite in the desert has good flavors but is slightly more expensive, so be mindful of that.
Safety and Precautions
When playing in the desert, it is necessary to pay attention to sun protection and sand prevention. Protective gear such as shoe covers, masks, and sunglasses are essential. The temperature difference in the desert is significant, so be sure to bring warm clothing. At the same time, take care of your personal belongings to avoid loss. A special reminder for families with small children is to pay extra attention to the safety of the children to prevent accidents.
Budget Section
For a 4-day and 3-night trip for one adult and one child, the total cost is close to 4000 yuan, with a considerable amount saved on transportation costs due to choosing high-speed rail. If you plan in advance and arrange your itinerary reasonably, the budget can be further optimized.
In summary, a trip to the Zhongwei Tengger Desert is full of surprises and excitement. Whether adults or children, everyone can find their own fun here. As long as you make adequate preparations and follow the precautions, I believe you too can have an unforgettable journey like I did.

Campsites are equipped with public toilets
❓ Will there be sandstorms?
There are almost no sandstorms in the Tengger Desert in summer, so sandstorms are unlikely to occur

You can have three meals a day with both meat and vegetarian options, eat hot meals, and even take hot showers!

One must embark on a desert trek at least once in life
The perks: Great weather, extremely photogenic (seeing beautiful scenery makes one happy). The Little Swan Lake and Sun Lake at sunset are incredibly beautiful... The desert turns a reddish-brown under the setting sun, which is extremely picturesque.
Suggestions: The desert has a significant temperature difference between day and night. Be sure to wear a hat during the day when trekking. There's no need to wear too much during the day; I myself wear a quick-drying shirt and a softshell jacket (with thin cotton lining).
Shoes!! A pair of suitable shoes for desert trekking is very important!!
Final suggestion: Travel with someone. Being alone is liberating, but taking photos is too troublesome, having to adjust the angle back and forth

The Tengger Desert in March carries a sense of melancholy
🌄【Heart of the Desert】🌅
In the vast sea of sand, I found my peace. Here, every grain of sand seems to tell a story of a thousand years, and I am just one of the listeners.👂
🏜️ Walking among the dunes, I feel the awe-inspiring work of nature. Each step leaves a deep imprint, as if telling the world: I was here, I witnessed.📸
🌅 At sunset, the sky is painted golden. I stand quietly on the dune, watching the sun slowly set, filled with emotion. In this moment, time seems to stand still, with just me and this desert.🕰️
🌟 Here, I feel the fragility and beauty of life. The desert, a place that seems desolate, contains endless vitality.🌱

Tengger Desert - Oasis Expedition
An unexpected desert rainstorm added a touch of mystery to our Tengger Desert journey. Although the Ulungur Lake lost its usual vibrancy after the rain, the heart of the earth from a drone's perspective is still breathtaking. Tengger Desert
Transportation
- Depart from Yinchuan city center at 7 am, arrive at the desert entrance by 9 am, return at 1 pm, and then be taken back to the hotel.
- The cost includes 1000 yuan for off-road vehicle crossing the desert and 400 yuan for the shuttle from the city center to the desert entrance.
- Additionally, a ticket fee of about 200 yuan must be paid to the local herdsmen.
Mystery of the Five Lakes
- We chose Moon Lake, Ulungur Lake (dark red), Camel Lake (pink), Hailuqi Lake, and Guitar Lake for our excursion.
- Compared to the well-known Ulungur Lake, I have a special fondness for the pink Camel Lake, which has its own unique charm. Moon Lake Ulungur Lake Moon Lake
Travel Tips
There is no signal in the desert, so it is advised to prepare cash for ticket purchases.
Since there are no clear roads in the desert, it is recommended to be led by an experienced driver to ensure safety.
To avoid motion sickness, it is advisable to take motion sickness medicine in advance, as the off-road vehicle experience in the desert is comparable to a mountain roller coaster.
Try to choose a sunny day for travel, as weather conditions greatly affect the viewing of natural landscapes, and the color of lakes can change after rain.
Despite the less than ideal weather, this Tengger Desert trip still allowed us to experience the wonders of nature and the unique charm of the heart of the earth.

Crossing the Five Lakes is just too much fun~
Folks, I don't know what you think, but regular travel can't satisfy me anymore. I like flexibility, freedom, returning to the essence of travel, not just an ordinary day, an ordinary trip, without any passion.
In Tengger, I found my own way of traveling. Following the leader, riding in an off-road vehicle, driving into the vast Tengger Desert, shuttling through the large and small sand dunes, looking for that touch of Ulan red in the desert.
Yes, Ulan Lake, a unique red lake in the Tengger Desert. You must have seen all kinds of lakes, but what about lakes in the desert? Red lakes in the desert? It's a bit incredible to think about it, but actually, there's nothing to it. It's just that the bottom of the lake has special minerals, so its color will be different.
I would call this process 'travel'.
By the way, if you want to come here, remember to take motion sickness medicine if you get car sick, haha, because the sand dunes are really bumpy.
FRANKIE NEWMAN
23 Summer Trip to Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia Day4
Day4: Wuhai → Aolunbulage Canyon → Rengen Peak → Ant Forest (passing by) → Naren Lake (passing by) → Ulan Buh Desert Highway → Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate → Wuhai Lake → Wuhai
On the fourth day, we mainly traveled between Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. Although the itinerary was compact, it was relatively relaxed except for the high temperature.
First stop: Aolunbulage Canyon (Picture 1). Aolunbulage Canyon belongs to the Tengger Park of China Alashan Desert World Geopark, which is part of the Yinshan Range. It is a path where water has 'walked' through, and the power of water has cut a huge deep trench from the originally flat land. The entire canyon includes the Western Fantasy Canyon, Alashan Canyon, and Shenshui Cave, each with its own characteristics.
Western Fantasy Canyon (Pictures 2-4): It integrates Yadan landform and Danxia landform, recording the changes of landform and the evolution of geology over millions of years. The interaction of wind and geology has formed the desert and Gobi-dominated geological landscape here. Private cars can drive to the entrance, where you can take a shuttle bus into the canyon (15 yuan per person) or walk. The shuttle bus will take you directly to the deepest part of the canyon, and then you can slowly walk out and enjoy.
Alashan Canyon (Pictures 5-6): After coming out of the Western Fantasy Canyon, you need to return to the three-way junction before you can go. Different from the Western Fantasy Canyon, you can drive in by yourself, with a total length of more than 1 kilometer.
Note: 1. There is no place to sell food and water in the scenic area, so you need to prepare these before you go in.
2. The signal in the scenic area is very poor, only mobile has a little signal, so if there is a problem while playing inside, it is very troublesome.
3. The total length of the Fantasy Canyon is about 2.5 kilometers. If you have time and the weather is not so hot, it is best to walk and take pictures. If you take a shuttle bus, some points will be missed, such as 'Mother Gate Cave'.
4. Be careful when you are about to reach the end of the Alashan Canyon, there is a sandy area there, and ordinary cars can easily get stuck. We encountered a small RV stuck in the sand that day, and it was very troublesome to ask for help and find a tow truck.
5. The supporting facilities are not mature yet, and you can only drive there by yourself.
Second stop: Rengen Peak (Pictures 7-8). Rengen Peak is completely a masterpiece of nature. Due to the well-developed vertical joints of the rock, the surrounding rocks have been weathered away under the action of rainwater erosion, gravity collapse, and wind, forming this lonely 'wind erosion column'. Because it looks like a male root, it is called 'Rengen Peak', and the locals also call it 'Shengen'. The 'Shengen' has a diameter of 4~8 meters, is thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top, is 34.14 meters high, slightly inclined, and is very majestic. You can only drive there by yourself.
Third stop: Ant Forest (Picture 9). I specifically looked for the Haloxylon ammodendron in the Ant Forest to see Ma Yun's promise to 'plant trees' in the desert. I saw the Haloxylon ammodendron, but I didn't find the sign.
Fourth stop: Naren Lake (Picture 10). Naren Lake is located at the junction of the Hetao Plain and the Ulan Buh Desert, adjacent to the Yellow River, and is a river trace lake formed by the change of the Yellow River. It was approved as a national wetland park in 2015, and it feels that it has not been fully built yet.
Fifth stop: Ulan Buh Desert Highway (Picture 11). The road is paved, but due to climate reasons, the road surface is deformed and not very flat. The sand dunes on both sides of the highway are continuous, the scenery is very good, and there are few vehicles, so you can stop and play with the sand at any time, and show off a little.
Sixth stop: Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate (Picture 12). The Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate is not a scenic spot. A self-driving desert post station has been established here, where you can appreciate the charm of desert crossing at close range. However, it is best to play desert crossing with professional off-road four-wheel drive vehicles (provided by the post station), and ordinary cars really can't play. If you drive into the desert by yourself, it is said to cost 30 yuan per car.
Seventh stop: Wuhai Lake (Picture 13). Wuhai Lake was formed by storing water at the end of December 2013 after the completion of the Haibowan Water Conservancy Hub of the Yellow River. It is connected to the water conservancy hub dam in the north, the Ulan Buh Desert in the west, the upper section of the Yellow River Wuhai section in the south, and the Wuhai City Riverside Scenic Belt in the east, with a total area of 118 square kilometer

The desert is not just the yellow sand. If you go deep into the hinterland of the Tengger Desert, you can't really understand the vastness and beauty of the sand sea, sunrise, sunset, starry sky...and will experience the wind, yellow Shafei Yang, a great temperature difference between day and night.
Enriched groundwater, feeding the life in the desert, pastures, lakes, swans, wild ducks, eagle, hare, camel, fox, sand lizard, beetle... between the desolate and the mourning, cherish life, Feeling the truth. Don't bother them when you go to the desert, because they are harder than you.

Travel to Zhongwei, booked a two-day trip to the desert. Our package includes three meals, one night camping and several desert projects.
The car needs to park in the designated parking lot. The items to be used can be brought into the desert and need to take their surf car into the camping area.
This surfing is super stimulating, and many slopes close to 90 degrees are really old.
Night is a sleeping tent camp, the items are handed over to them for safekeeping, we eat hot pot for lunch, and it is very different to eat hot pot in the desert.
There is a large lake in front of the camp and you can swim inside. The desert sunset in the evening is really super beautiful.
After lunch, there are a variety of beach items to choose from, beach buggy, sand boarding, and camel riding. In the evening, everyone sang together and sang, and tried a very special travel experience.

It seems that I am a little gravel between the heavens and the earth. At this moment, I cant help but immediately send a circle of friends, I cant wait to tell the world, I Arrived in Tengger, and realized a dream, accept your envy and hate! God's reply is: Is there a signal in the desert? ?
Start flying the drone, I am making a tidbit next to it, the drone is in front, two overweight SLRs are placed in the bag On the top, the voices in the distance are gone. From time to time, I can hear the screams of the people who are riding the buggy. The whole world is quiet, and the time seems to have slowed down.
photographed in the desert, shot The shadows coming out are different from other places! Parents may not know that the Longmen Inn and the Thorn Ling are all photographed in Tengger!
Have you seen the swings and seesaws in the desert? They are all placed next to the Thorning Inn. If you have time, sit on the swing and watch the sunset in the desert. Do you feel that the years are quiet, whether the inner softness will be touched, and you want to last forever!
Self-driving plus weight-bearing walking, really tired! When the corner meets the beauty, I feel that everything is worthwhile...
