I suggest spending 30 yuan on a guide to hear the story of the wordless stele and why the heads of the 61 foreign officials’ statues are missing. It’s much more interesting than just looking at the tomb. In the afternoon, visit Yuanjia Village, the essence of Xianyang. 🍜 Enter the village and try the first shop’s oil-splashed biangbiang noodles. The wide noodles with chili splash sizzle and smell so good you won’t want to move. ⚠️ Don’t buy yogurt in Yuanjia Village; it’s wholesale. Walk further inside for freshly brewed yogurt at 5 yuan a cup, thick enough to coat the glass. ⏰ After 4 PM, Yuanjia Village is less crowded. The old teahouses in the alleys fill with elderly chess players. For 20 yuan, you can brew tea and sit all afternoon. 🚄 The high-speed train from Xi’an North Station to Xianyang takes only 15 minutes, much faster than city traffic. 06 Songyuan City | Jilin Chagan Lake is famous for winter, but summer is often overlooked. In August, the lake is vast like a sea, with no fishy smell in the wind, only the fresh scent of aquatic plants. Golden Toad Island is the best spot to watch the sunset. ⏰ Arrive at 5 PM, sit on the rocks by the shore, and watch the sun slowly sink into the lake, turning the entire surface orange-gold. At that moment, time seems to slow down. 🍜 The lakeside fish restaurant serves a pot of mixed fish stew with seven or eight kinds of fish. The broth is so fresh it’ll make your tongue tingle. At 50 yuan per person, you’ll be full. ⚠️ Don’t take the speedboat at the scenic entrance. It costs 100 yuan for 10 minutes and is a rip-off. For swimming, go two kilometers north to a wild beach with shallow water and fine sand, where locals swim. Two days on the weekend is enough. Arrive Friday night and stay in a clean, spacious hotel in the city for 150 yuan a night. 07 Fangchenggang City | Guangxi The sea in Fangchenggang is less commercialized than Beihai. More locals than tourists are on the beach. Leshan Ancient Fishing Village was my biggest surprise. The old houses are built with oyster shells, and walking the alleys you can smell the salty sea breeze. ⏰ At 6 AM, watch fishermen haul in their nets. The small crabs and mantis shrimp are taken by nearby stalls as soon as they land. You can eat them right there. The steamed freshness can’t be found in the city. 🍜 At noon, go to the port market. Buy seafood yourself and have it cooked at a shop. The cooking fee is 10 yuan per dish. Try flower snails, flower crabs, and mantis shrimp. At 60 yuan per person, you’ll be satisfied. ⚠️ The beach in Fangchenggang’s coastal area is scorching after 2 PM. Rent a sunshade for 30 yuan for the afternoon or risk sunburn. Stay in a fishing village guesthouse at 180 yuan a night. Open the window and the sea is right there. 08 Zhoukou City | Henan The Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum is much larger than I expected. ⏰ Go at 8 AM when the sunlight hits the glazed tiles of Tongtian Hall, shining golden. There aren’t many people. The ancient cypress trees in the mausoleum are over a thousand years old, with trunks too thick for two people to hug. 🍜 At noon, go to Huaiyang County and find a shop selling Fangbudai, a baked bun stuffed with tofu and vegetables. It costs 3 yuan each, crispy and filling. In the afternoon, visit Taiqing Palace, the Taoist ancestral home and birthplace of Laozi. The ancient steles and Tang cypress trees in the courtyard are very peaceful. ⚠️ Don’t buy incense at the scenic entrance. Incense costing 30 yuan outside can be bought for 10 yuan inside. After touring Taiqing Palace, visit nearby Luyi County. Their mahu porridge is a local breakfast staple, made from millet and soybeans, with a smooth texture like fine porridge. It costs 5 yuan a bowl. 🚄 A taxi from Zhoukou East Station to Huaiyang takes about 40 minutes. Shared rides cost 20 yuan per person. Among these eight places, I personally recommend Enshi and Alxa most—one for mountains, one for sand—both perfect for forgetting your phone.
