Qamea Resort & Spa

Qamea Island|5.47km from Civa Pearl Farm
This is such a special place! My partner (who had never been to Fiji) and I (who have been there many times) agreed that Qamea Resort is our favorite holiday ever. The location on Qamea Island - 10 minutes by boat from Taveuni - is stunningly beautiful, and every accommodation has a gorgeous view of the beach, the ocean and the green mountains of Taveuni across the channel. All the excursions - the waterfall, the snorkeling and the village visit - were great. The diving offered here includes the best known sites in the area, but we went to a less well known site nearby for a ”discovery dive” since my partner is not certified, and it was amazingly beautiful! Thank you Edward! The staff is friendly, efficient and took very good care of us, The food ranged from excellent to amazing, and if we preferred to dine on our own, the meal arrived at our door. This is a place where you can really unwind, but if you still need good internet you can get it. Our room was spacious and we loved the outdoor shower (covered in case of rain), and the refrigerator, coffee maker and the hammock on the front porch. Furthermore - the management really helped us when a class 2 cyclone disrupted our plans. They made changes to flights and helped me get a refund at my next destination when it became impossible to travel there. In spite of the changes we had to make, they made the whole experience work out for the best. Thanks Ron! Qamea Resort is a wonderful blend of high end services (world class diving AND a spa with European trained masseuses) and an authentic Fijian experience. While you are here, you come to understand that you are visiting a place where ”progress” has not undercut tradition. While the local people have cell phones, they also still live off the land and sea in their traditional way. You really can have such an exotic experience and still enjoy all the comforts of a high end resort!
Maravu Taveuni Lodge

Maravu Taveuni Lodge

Taveuni Island
The staff at the Maravu was very helpful and attentive to us including Kara and Lavinia. We also were welcomed by Cali who played a nice song for us on his guitar. The bure we stayed in was very large and spacious with hardwood floors and the size of the individual rooms was great. Finally the towels there were nice and thick. Before commenting on the things there that did not go so well, I should state that when we were at the Maravu it was likely still in what I would describe as ”Covid Recovery Mode”. Also my wife and I are not 5 star hotel types in any way but we do expect that basic standards of cleanliness be in place. So if you're thinking about staying there you may want to follow-up on the concerns I've noted below. The bure we stayed in for 5 nights was filthy and so many places in it had fresh evidence of ants and spider webs. It was so dirty that we considered detail cleaning it ourselves with Lysol and a mop. However, we decided to ask the staff to clean it again. After they cleaned it, the room was still extremely dirty and the spider webs were still there. Because we could never get the bure to an acceptable state of cleanliness and the furniture was filthy, we searched in vain everyday for a clean place to set down our bags. Finally, the windows in our room were glass louvers and many of them were broken to a point where we couldn't close them completely. The main dining and lounge areas weren't clean either and had very limited gluten free options. As a result, we only ate there the first day and always ate somewhere else after that. When we arrived, we were also informed that the resort was generating their own electricity using a diesel generator and that they would be regularly turning off the power ever day we were there during the hours from 10AM to 4PM. This daily power shut off caused the temperature in our bure to soar and put our groceries in the refrigerator at risk of spoiling. However the most disappointing thing to us about these power outages was that we didn't know about this situation until we arrived and the fact that the resort staff told us that all resorts on the island shut of their generators at the same time they did everyday. We later found out this was false from tourists we met on Taveuni who were staying elsewhere. The resort also has a lot of grass in between the bures and they do not use lawn mowers to cut that grass quickly. Instead, 4-5 men walked around and cut the grass using gas powered string trimmers producing noise for 4-5 hours - something made worse by the daily power generator shutoff and the fact that we had to keep the windows open in the bure to keep it cooler. Finally, unfortunately like many resorts in Fiji, the Maravu does not have safes in the bure so we had to keep our valuables in a locked filing cabinet in the main office. Fortunately nothing was stolen but it was discouraging to have to carry our valuables around with us most of the time.
