Royal Phala Cliff Beach Resort

Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted an upgrade, that set the alarm bells ringing ,we decided to check the original room that was booked ( an annex on the beach with no direct access to the beach with very poor to no WiFi )and the upgrade room (main building)the original rooms were ok but an absolute pain to get too with lots of stairs ,a bridge and a lift to negotiate, the air conditioning in the original looked fairly new and the room had a decent view,we decided to view the upgrade which was a lot bigger and closer to the restaurant, pool and car park, we decided to go for the upgrade and pay the extra, the beds were comfortable and big, there was only 1 internal ceiling light which was in the corner of the room ( weird) no bedside lighting at all, so making the room very dark-at night ,the air conditioning was probably the original and although cool enough it was very noisy ,the bathroom had no toilet or tissue paper. The hotel itself has obviously seen better days and has been left to deteriorate for quite some time judging by the paint work and condition of the furniture . The swimming pool has issues with quite a few missing tiles, green algae and very poor condition duck boards around the pool which could be dangerous . There are cigarette stumps all around because of no ash trays and all the plant pots have cigarette stumps in them ,the one’s in the photo have been there for 3 days . Breakfast was ok and catered for most people there but again all the tissue dispensers on the tables were empty. We found the staff to be very nice and helpful with the exception of one lady in the restaurant who was quite rude to my wife and myself ,after finishing my dinner on our second evening I requested to charge the dinner to my room and she said “no you pay now “and brought the bill straight away and just stood next to me,I then had to phone my wife and ask her to come down from the room to pay for the dinner in cash ,the lady disappeared before my wife arrived and paid the cashier, the following morning I was eating breakfast and the same lady asked me if my wife was coming down for breakfast,i said that she was to which she replied she had better come quickly as breakfast was finished at 10 am,my wife duly arrived and the lady went straight to my wife and asked her if she had paid for my dinner the night before, she then informed her she better be quick to get breakfast as the restaurant was stopping at 10am ,my wife had to inform her that the time was actually 8.45am so why the fuss? There are a lot of issues with this hotel and I’m sure it would be an enormous and expensive task to return this hotel to its former glory ( fantastic position on the beach). This is the worst hotel we have ever stayed at in Thailand!

Nice hotel, mainly for locals. I was here for one night to quickly get to the airport in the morning. Beautiful view from the window, good restaurant, excellent breakfast.

We were a bit concerned about some negatieve reviews related to being an old and outdated hotel. But after taking a closer look at the hotel and surrounding photos we decided to give it a try. Yes the hotel is a bit older but we like this style and found the hotel well maintained and very clean. The room was large and furniture was quite new. Views from the room are great (we were on 5th floor). The large pool is situated in a very well maintained garden with lots of shade and beautiful trees. Pool furniture is new and comfortable. We really liked the beach area and the shady trees. Yes you can see the industrial estate in the distance but water quality was good (I would much rather swim close to a petroleum plant than a city like Pattaya as sewage and drainage is much better controlled in the petroleum industry (due to heavy fines). Hotel seems very quiet during the week with more guests during the weekend. Wifi in the pool and public areas is good but poor signal in our room. Food is good at hotel restaurant at reasonable price and in a very nice setting. We will definitely come back again.
