The hotel's location is great, about a 15-minute walk from Cardiff train station, and very close to Cardiff Castle. I asked the staff and learned that the hotel is over 400 years old. It used to have an underground tunnel connecting to Cardiff Castle, but it was sealed off after the 2014 NATO Castle Gala. The hotel itself has a castle-like style, and the mini-elevator feels like a step back in time. Breakfast was delicious, and they offer free luggage storage.

The location is really convenient for getting around, with train and bus stations nearby. There are also plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance, and Cardiff Castle is just a short stroll away. The room might be a bit on the small side, but it has all the necessary amenities, including a kettle. The reception staff were friendly and very helpful. It would be even better if there was a microwave! There's also a small Thai restaurant not too far away; we actually bought some food from there and ate it in the hotel lobby. Overall, it's a great place to stay. I'd definitely choose this hotel again when I come back to Cardiff.

A very satisfying stay. The hotel is ideally located, just a five-minute walk from the train station and bus terminal, and within fifteen minutes of Cardiff Castle. Several supermarkets and restaurants are nearby, making it very convenient. Although it doesn't have many reviews on Ctrip, I noticed it was very busy when I checked in, with many international tourists staying. The room was spacious, easily enough for two suitcases, and the bed was large enough for two. Despite the hotel's proximity to the street and train tracks, it was very quiet: the corridors were carpeted to minimize noise, and the windows and walls were well insulated. During my two-night stay, I didn't hear any train or street noise. The room window had a great view of Cardiff Bay. The air conditioning worked well with both cooling and heating. There was no drinking water in the room, but complimentary lemonade was available on the first floor. The receptionist who checked me in was very friendly and helpful. He proactively explained the events taking place at Cardiff Castle that day and provided directions to the area. Unfortunately, I can't remember his name, but I remember him as a young, white man without glasses. I've been traveling through several cities in the UK, and of the hotels I've stayed in, this hotel has the most welcoming front desk. The only downside is that there are only two staff members on the first floor at any one time. This level houses the hotel check-in, a restaurant, a bar, vending machines, and luggage storage. The staff seemed incredibly busy, and whether it was taking a restaurant order, checking out, checking in, or picking up luggage, it took three to five minutes for them to come over. The staff were friendly and helpful, but they were certainly busy. It would have been helpful if the hotel had more staff on the first floor.

We went to the Royal Hotel not really knowing what to expect.  It is set with a lovely building. The architecture is beautiful.  The hotel is set out in an odd way but I think that adds the character. You enter on the ground floor, go up two floors to reception. There is a small bar there that offers free teas and coffees.  The slug and lettuce down stairs provides you with 20% off of food if you show your keycard.  The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable about the local area.  Location is good and because we were on the 4th floor we couldn’t hear the noise for the streets below.  The room was ok. Aircon in the room with tea and coffee.  Now two great points that I’ve been saving….!!  1. The shower! Let me tell you something it’s like I was sat in a typhoon, Cardiff clearly doesn’t have an issue with its water pressure!  2. The bed, it was luxurious, I was able to sink and sleep so soundly! We need this bed for our house!

Decent hotel, centrally located close to the train station making it a very convenient place to stay. Staff very welcoming and took into account my special request and booked me a quiet room which was appreciated. Breakfast, nothing special, just like any other hotel breakfast in the uk. Good views at the breakfast area, staff on hand to help and often going out of their way to help. Service was 10/10. Rooms themselves felt a little old and could do with a touch up but comfy enough for a short stay! Coffee machine too!

Great location, convenient for sites. Good rate which included breakfast. Difficult to get to by car. Using Waze is much better. Didn’t get the room type booked but managed for 2 nights. Agent at checkin took several minutes before acknowledging me in the queue. I would have been happy being told ”I’ll be with you in a few minutes” instead of being ignored whilst he chatted with his colleague about what seemed to be an issue. I believe because he was distracted, we weren’t given any hotel information - i.e. location of lifts, breakfast time etc. which is standard. Breakfast service wasn’t great the first morning. Second morning was much better. I think it’s because we arrived at approx. 10:30 on the first day and the team was ready to go as I could hear them counting down the minutes to the end of their shift. No hot drinks offered; told drinks were on the buffet when in fact they needed to be ordered. Drinks eventually brought on asking again, but no cups. Had to ask for them. Quite noisy at night because of all the bars and restaurants outside, which meant the window couldn’t be left open, as the room was quite warm, despite adjusting the temperature of the HVAC system. Very nice, modern hotel, could improve with better staff training.

I stayed here for a business trip for one week. The room seemed to be clean but it is so dark that you can’t really tell if it is clean or not. That’s actually an issue - the lightening is bad. I couldn’t really work in the room since it had only a yellow ambient lightening and not a normal main source of light. The bathroom can be slightly cold if you don’t leave the door open so that warm air from the A/C can enter. It is shameful that they don’t have a breakfast included, especially for long stays in the hotel which is not so cheap and out of the center… at least one small sandwich would make things better, but nop 👎🏼. Another thing is that the area is not very nice. Unless you have to do something in that area, i don’t recommend you to stay. I was even told by taxi drivers to not walk around alone after it gets dark. Before I knew that, I did take a walk and it really felt a bit unsafe. The staff was ok, I didn’t have much contact with them. Only had an incident when I arrived - they couldn’t find me in their system (it was booked under other name by mistake but I actually changed it a week before arrival so I don’t know why they didn’t have updated information). There is a small gym, but almost all machines, except one, are for cardio exercises. Almost no restaurants or shops in the area.

Hotel was very clean, plenty of parking. Staff were exceptional and as I had misplaced my glasses on day 1, they made every effort to locate them, which they did. I'd left them on the cold water dispenser when I when out. The meals in the restaurant where also excellent. Overall a satisfying stay.

GGuest UserThe only reasons I gave 4/5 stars for service was the self service hot beverage station and making your own toast. Order their specials better, however, this time my poached eggs were not soft. Excellent wine and excellent bar lunch which they allowed us to eat in the restaurant which was a bonus. I love this location. Walks through the wetlands and to Penarth and easy links to Barry Island. Spa brilliant and the quiet area next to the gym brilliant for reading

GGuest UserThe hotel is located in a very nice area where it’s easy to get a taxi or walk anywhere within the town. However, the mobile signal was quite weak, and the hotel Wi-Fi kept disconnecting - I had to log in again every time, which was quite inconvenient when trying to work. The room had a strong smell of rubber or leather, which made me feel sick and gave me a headache throughout my stay. The shower drainage didn’t work properly - no other drainage hole in the bathroom, and it eventually overflowed. I had to call the maintenance team to fix it. After lying on the bed for a short while, I noticed red, itchy patches on my face, almost like insect bites. I later found out that strong detergent used in washing the bedding can sometimes cause skin irritation. That night, I slept with a clean towel over the pillow and asked for fresh bedding the next day. Although my companion didn’t have any issues, I’d recommend anyone with sensitive skin to cover the pillow with a clean towel just in case. Overall, the services provided by the hotel were not bad, but the condition of the room and the reliability of the Wi-Fi definitely need improvement.

NNickRZWe arrived just before check-in time and were allowed to go into a room, but the room had opaque windows. We booked over 3 months ago, just expected what we asked for, not first come put them in there. We then waited for another room, to then get a double bed and a fold away bed instead of two twin beds. Lots of old furniture nonsense which was now in our way as not enough space due to two beds. Beds were comfy but arrangement was not. The breakfast was very nice, could choose kippers if you wanted.
