Kusu Island

Tua Pek Kong temple is the popular Chinese temple located there. On the ninth month of the lunar calendar, thousands of devotees will go over and pay respects to the different deities. Other than hiking/trekking in Singapore’s mainland, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa. There are 3 Islands open to public via public ferries from Marina South Pier. St John Island, Lazarus Island and Kusu Island. Kusu Island not surprise spot to Taoist/ Buddhist community in Singapore because of its pilgrimage activity annually held there. There is hawker centre in Kusu Island but they only turn up once a year for extra information. For St John island, prolly those who went for school camps may have come before for camping. Lazarus island is linked to St John island, the link path is known to Anglers fishing there. Private yacht usually also stop at the sea bay for water activities. Note: Do bring enough water and food to consume when going to the Southern Islands as there are no stalls in the islands, be a responsible person and do keep the area clean after consuming food and drinks ! Kusu Island, or Tortoise Island got its name from the legend where it had a magical tortoise that turned itself into an island to save 2 shipwrecked sailors. Other than the Chinese Temple, the island also has a beautiful beach and a tortoise sanctuary. Wonder around the island to explore the natural beauty of the island or just laze/sunbathe at the beach! Getting there is easy by the 2 ferry companies at Marina South Pier: Singapore Island Cruise Ferry and Marina South Ferry. The ferries also stop by St John Island so you can also have an island hoping trip in the same day. Do take note of the ferry schedules though in order to catch the ferry back to Singapore since no overnight camping is allowed on Kusu Island

Kusu Island, also known as “Tortoise Island,” is just a short ferry ride from Lazarus and St John’s island. How can you get to Kusu Island? Get the island hopping pass! I purchased the pass (Singapore Island Cruise) from Trip.com that allowed me to visit three islands: St. John's Island, Lazarus Island, and Kusu Island. Most people visit Kusu Island to visit the Chinese Da Bogong temple, the turtle monuments and sanctuary, and other cultural spots. But most visitors do not know that there is a serene beach that is great for swimming. The waters here are calm and you can spend a few hours just enjoying the sea and skyline of Singapore. The temple's Chinese architecture, including red bricks, green tiles, and a pond where turtles are released, adds to its charm. Pilgrims visit to offer money, seek cures, calm the sea, ward off disasters, and pray for children, believing in its effectiveness. Legend has it that Kusu Island was formed by a giant turtle to rescue two people lost at sea. In gratitude, the duo constructed a temple and a church on the island. 🐢⛪ Kusu Island lacks roads, with winding paths leading to Binhai Dock and St. John's Island. For a smooth trip, take the MRT on the North South Line to Exit B of Binhai Port and purchase a boat ticket on-site or online in advance. 🚢 The ferry departs from Binhai South Ferry Terminal, stopping at St. John's Island before reaching Kusu Island. 📝Singapore Travelogue part20: Turtle Island📝 🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️ Turtle Island is a small offshore island located just 5.6 kilometers away from Singapore, first discovered by a Spanish fleet in 1616. Legend has it that in a certain year during the ninth lunar month, a divine turtle transformed itself into an island to save sailors from a storm. In gratitude, the sailors built a temple on the island, and the story has been passed down to this day. 170 years ago, an Arab and a Chinese set out on a pilgrimage to Turtle Island. The Chinese fell seriously ill on the island, but suddenly, a boat loaded with food and water appeared, saving them both. They were eventually buried on the island, becoming the site of the current Datuk Gong Temple and Malay sacred site. 🐢🐢🐢🐢 If you're lucky during your visit, you might encounter huge turtles. The beach here is almost deserted, making it perfect for bringing a picnic basket and spending a leisurely afternoon feeling like you have the place to yourself. Among the Southern Islands of Singapore, Lazarus Island is by far the most popular when it comes to beaches. However, Kusu Island’s beach is definitely worth a visit as well.
