The temple has two pagodas on either sides of entrance. There are huge golden budha sculptures. Photos are not allowed inside. The temple is located on the famous food street which becomes a treat to watch as soon as the lights are turned on after sunset. It's a fun place to try out new food. #givethanks

The Southern Shaolin Temple in Quanzhou is said to have been built by Monk Zhikong, one of the thirteen monks who once saved Emperor Li Shimin of the Tang Dynasty. It is called the Southern Shaolin in contrast to the Northern Shaolin of the Songshan Shaolin Temple in Henan. The Southern Shaolin Temple depicted in Jin Yong's novels is this very place. Mr. Jin Yong once inscribed sixteen characters for the Quanzhou Shaolin Temple: 'Shaolin martial arts, with a long and distant source, spread to the south, where they were greatly developed and promoted.' Later, when Jin Yong revised his 15 martial arts novels, he changed all references to the Southern Shaolin to the Quanzhou Shaolin Temple. It is said that the martial arts lineage of both Hong Xiguan and Wong Fei-hung originated from here. Hong Xiguan once visited the Quanzhou Shaolin Temple to worship the abbot Zhi Shan as his master, diligently practiced Southern Shaolin martial arts, and later returned to Guangdong to create Hung Kuen and open a martial arts school to teach his followers. Among Hong Xiguan's disciples, the most famous is Wong Fei-hung. The temple environment is very pleasant, especially the quiet and serene bamboo forest where the warrior monks practice their martial arts, giving a sense of being in a martial arts film. The entire scenic area is relatively small, with gentle slopes, making it an easy walk, and it takes about 1 hour to visit. The Wuyi Hall has performances by warrior monks, scheduled every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30~11:00 AM and 3:00~3:30 PM. We went on a non-weekend and perfectly missed it, but we were not particularly fixated on seeing it. The Southern Shaolin Temple is quite far from the West Street, and it is not accessible by the small white cars, so you can either drive or take a taxi there.
