Atomium

Huge metal spheres, connected by tubes, make it look as if a sci-fi object suddenly landed right in the middle of Brussels. However, the Atomium has actually been around since 1958—it was built specifically for the World's Fair (Expo 58). And even decades later, it still looks like the architecture of the future. The coolest part is that it’s not just a weird building. The structure actually represents an iron crystal magnified billions of times. ✨ What's especially impressive:
⚛️ giant mirrored spheres
🌆 panoramic views of Brussels from the top
🚀 futuristic walkways inside
✨ spectacular evening illumination
📸 total sci-fi movie vibes The first strong impression hits you from a distance—the Atomium literally stands out against the entire cityscape. And when you get closer, you really start to grasp its massive scale: the spheres are enormous, with their metal surfaces reflecting the sky, the people, and the surrounding city. The vibe inside is just as surreal: long, glowing tunnels and escalators between the spheres make you feel like you're wandering through a space station. It’s especially gorgeous at night. Once the illumination turns on, the Atomium looks even more futuristic—especially against the dark sky and the glowing city lights of Brussels. 💡 Useful info:
• 📍 located in the northern part of Brussels
• 🚇 closest metro station: Heysel / Heizel
• 🎟 you can go inside and head up to the observation deck
• 🌆 the best views are at sunset and at night
• 📷 the most epic shots are taken from right underneath the spheres
• 🚶♂️ Mini-Europe park is located right next door Fun fact: The Atomium is about 102 meters tall, and each sphere is roughly 18 meters in diameter. Ultimately, the Atomium turns out to be more than just a quirky building—it’s a true symbol of European optimism and faith in the future, one that still looks completely cutting-edge even decades after it was built.

Brussels is easy to associate with Grand Place, chocolate shops, and Art Nouveau buildings, but I found a more interesting side when I wandered without following the usual route. My first discovery was Cité Hellemans in the Marolles. The red and yellow brick housing complex, built in 1915, has beautiful arcades and feels completely different from the polished streets around central Brussels. Then I walked through Rue de la Cigogne, a tiny passage tucked away near Sainte Catherine. It was so quiet that I almost wondered if I had taken a wrong turn. The little oasis is especially pretty when the greenery is in bloom. My third stop was Mont des Arts. It isn’t exactly secret, but I loved the combination of gardens, city views, and grand architecture. I sat on the steps for a while and watched Brussels move around me. I still explored Grand Place, Atomium, Royal Palace, Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, Manneken Pis, Sablon, and the European Quarter, but these three places gave me a more relaxed and unexpected Brussels one I enjoyed discovering on foot. #brussel #brussels #belgium

If you’re hunting for the perfect souvenir in Brussels, you have to visit Maison Dandoy, a historic biscuit shop founded back in 1829. ✨ The shop is filled with Belgium’s famous speculoos! They offer a huge variety, from the classic cinnamon and clove-scented spice cookies to vanilla and chocolate options. 🍪 What’s even better are the biscuits shaped like Brussels landmarks. ♡ 🇧🇪 Manneken Pis shape 🏛️ Atomium shape They’re so cute and make for the perfect gift! The Manneken Pis cookies were €9.90, and the Atomium ones were €7.90. 💶 With their charming boxes and ribbons, these are perfect for a "special treat" rather than just a casual souvenir. ◎ Of course, they also have plenty of traditional speculoos and other baked goods that are tempting to buy just for yourself. 🥹♡ 📍Maison Dandoy – Grand-Place Rue au Beurre 31, 1000 Brussels ⏰ 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Daily) *Business hours may vary. Located just steps away from the Grand Place, it's super convenient to pop in while you’re sightseeing. ✨ Highly recommended for anyone looking to bring home a true taste of Belgium! 🇧🇪

I absolutely cannot believe how many people completely skip over Mechelen! It's this incredibly historic Flemish gem tucked away practically halfway between Brussels and Antwerp, making it super accessible yet surprisingly untouched by mass tourism. I had the most wonderful time exploring its quiet streets, which gave me that authentic Belgian feel I was craving after the crowds elsewhere. It’s special because you get those classic, romantic canals and beautiful stepped-gable architecture, just look at the colourful waterfront reminding me of Bruges or Ghent, but the vibe here is so relaxed and truly local. You won’t find any of those frustrating tourist bottlenecks here, just genuine charm at every turn, which is exactly why I'm recommending it as my ultimate underrated destination. My absolute favorite moment was when I committed to the climb up the iconic St. Rumbold’s Tower. You can see its impressive, unfinished silhouette soaring above the city square. Trust me, your legs might complain about the 500+ steps, but the reward at the skywalk is unparalleled: a truly panoramic view that stretches across Flanders on a clear day, including Antwerp's port and even Brussels' Atomium! After conquering the tower, I treated myself to a leisurely stroll through the Vismarkt, a lively old fish market area seen that has been cleverly transformed. It's now lined with all sorts of modern, enticing eateries and bars where I casually people-watched over a coffee and a waffle. As someone who loves good beer, a tour of Brouwerij Het Anker was essential. They are one of Belgium's oldest operating breweries, and walking through their historic premises felt like stepping back in time. Sampling their famous Gouden Carolus beers—especially the Tripel—right at the source was a major highlight of my trip. For a budgeting tip, consider grabbing a sandwich or some fries from a local frietkot for lunch and enjoying it in the Kruidtuin (Botanical Garden), another beautiful, free hidden gem. My local suggestion: wander aimlessly! The best discoveries are often made when you're not trying to find something specific. Mechelen is very walkable, and its lack of crowds makes it perfect for budget-friendly exploring on foot. #Mechelen #UnderratedBelgium #Flanders #VisitFlanders #HiddenGem #BelgianBeer #GoudenCarolus #StRumboldsTower #Vismarkt #UnderratedDestinationn #AuthenticTravel #underratedspots

#mytraveldiary Belgium swept me off my feet with its charm-packed cities. In Brussels, I marveled at the grandeur of Grand Place, indulged in heavenly chocolates, and admired surreal Magritte masterpieces. The Atomium was futuristic fun, while cozy cafés made me feel right at home. Then came Bruges, a fairytale escape. Its canals shimmered under medieval bridges, and every corner whispered history. I climbed the Belfry, wandered through quiet alleys, and savored the best waffles of my life. Together, Brussels and Bruges offered a perfect blend of culture, beauty, and indulgence. Two cities, one unforgettable journey through the heart of Belgium.

Belgium is a small country, but it has a lot of depth. The scent of chocolate, beer foam, medieval canals, comic murals... every city has its own vibe. Just got back, and my mind is still filled with the image of Bruges’ Belfry and the golden rooftops of the main square. This guide covers all the classic spots I visited, with clear tips on how to enjoy each place. Just follow it if you want to go 🍫🚲 · -- 📍 Brussels Belgium’s capital, known as the “heart of Europe.” The Grand Place, Manneken Pis, comic murals, and chocolate shops make every stroll scenic. · Highlights: The Grand Place was called “Europe’s most beautiful square” by Victor Hugo. The guild houses around it shine brilliantly in the sunlight. The Manneken Pis statue is nearby—small but surrounded by charming alleys. The Saint-Hubert Gallery is an old shopping arcade lined with chocolate and luxury shops. The Belgian Comic Strip Center brings back childhood memories of Tintin and The Smurfs. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts house many works by Rubens and Magritte. If you have time, you can climb the Atomium for a city view, but the exhibits inside are outdated and photos can be backlit, so it’s not a must-see. · Itinerary: Plan 1.5–2 days. The old town’s attractions are close together and walkable. Take the metro to reach the Atomium. · Tips: Pickpockets are common around the Grand Place, so keep your backpack in front. Visit the Grand Place again at night—the atmosphere changes completely when the lights come on. 📍 Bruges Known as the “Venice of the North,” the entire old town is a World Heritage site. Canals, stone bridges, red brick houses, and the Belfry create a fairy-tale atmosphere. · Highlights: Markt square and the Belfry are iconic photo spots. Climb the tower for a panoramic view of the red rooftops. Minnewater Park has swans and peaceful waters. A canal boat tour is a must, offering a unique view of medieval buildings from the water. The Basilica of the Holy Blood houses a crystal vial said to contain the blood of Jesus. The Beguinage is a quiet, healing World Heritage site with white-walled courtyards. The Church of Our Lady holds Michelangelo’s sculpture Madonna and Child. · Itinerary: About 1 hour by train from Brussels. Stay overnight to see Bruges at its best when the crowds have left in the evening. · Tips: The old town has many cobblestone streets, so wear comfortable shoes. Boat tickets cost about €10 for a 40-minute ride. A free shuttle bus runs between the train station and the main square. 📍 Ghent The largest medieval city in Europe after Paris, now a favorite among creatives. Canals, castles, churches, and graffiti streets add a lively vibe beyond Bruges. · Highlights: Saint Michael’s Bridge is a prime photo spot, offering views of three towers and medieval buildings reflected in the water. Gravensteen Castle (the Count’s Castle) is well preserved and you can walk the walls. Saint Bavo’s Cathedral houses the famous Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers—VR guides are recommended. The Graslei and Korenlei riverside streets are perfect for a scenic walk, with old houses mirrored in the water and stunning evening light. Graffiti Street is a whole alley of street art, great for photos. · Itinerary: About 35 minutes by train from Brussels, 25 minutes from Bruges. Plan for half a day or a full day. · Tips: Half a day is enough to see the core area without paid attractions. But Ghent is a city to slow down and enjoy, so don’t rush. 📍 Antwerp The world’s largest diamond processing and trading center, also a fashion capital. The central train station is known as one of the world’s most beautiful stations—worth a visit on its own. · Highlights: Antwerp Central Station blends neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau styles, like a “railway cathedral.” The main square has the city hall and guild houses, smaller but as exquisite as Brussels’. Steen Castle is one of Europe’s oldest castles, located by the Scheldt River, perfect for an evening stroll. Rubens’ house offers a close look at the Baroque master’s living space. The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) lets you climb for free to see city views. Saint Paul’s Church holds works by Rubens and Van Dyck. · Itinerary: About 45 minutes by train from Brussels. Plan for half a day to a full day. · Tips: Antwerp is also a hotspot for pickpockets, so stay alert. For shopping, visit Meir Street, the city’s busiest commercial street. · -- 🥘 Food recommendations (simple bites) · Fries: Belgium’s pride, fried twice for a crispy outside and soft inside. Best dipped in Andalouse sauce or mayonnaise. · Waffles: Two types. Brussels waffles are rectangular, crispy outside and fluffy inside; Liège waffles are round with pearl sugar, denser and sweeter. · Mussels (moules): Locally called Moules-frites, a pot of mussels cooked with white wine and onions, served with fries—very fresh. · Chocolate: Neuhaus, the royal Belgian brand, invented pralines and is worth buying. Any handmade shop on the street is good. · Beer: Trappist abbey beers and Lambic sour beers are specialties. The former is rich, the latter fruity—both delicious. · Flemish beef stew: Beef slow-cooked in Belgian dark beer, with a rich sauce, served with fries or mashed potatoes. · Nose candy: A Ghent specialty shaped like a nose, hard shell with soft filling, quite sweet. Try if curious but don’t buy too much. 📝 Travel tips · Visa: Schengen visa required. Apply in advance and check that your personal info matches your passport to avoid entry refusal. · Transport: Belgium’s trains are very convenient, with travel times between cities from 30 to 90 minutes. The SNCB app is handy for schedules. · Language: Official languages are Dutch, French, and German. If satisfied, tip 5%–10% or round up. · Business hours: Most shops close on Sundays, especially in small towns. Stock up on essentials. · Restrooms: Public toilets usually charge a fee, so carry small change. · Weather: Frequent rain and overcast days, so bring an umbrella or rain jacket. Summer can have extreme weather—watch local alerts.
