Highlights: This English-style urban garden is located on the edge of the inner city area, and the beautiful scenery attracts people to walk, jog and hang out. The park was named New Park in the early days, and was later changed to its current name in honor of the famous Dutch playwright and poet Jost van den Vondel in the 17th century. Vondelpark is Amsterdam's larger city park and includes a famous open-air theatre, numerous children's playgrounds, several cafés and restaurants. On King's Day, one of the Dutch national holidays, Vondelpark turns into a huge open-air children's market, with many young Amsterdammers selling their unwanted toys and clothes in droves, or becoming a street Musicians play musical instruments.
