Dukezong Ancient Town is located in the southeast of Shangri-La, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and was built by the Tubo Kingdom during the Tang Dynasty. "Dukezong" is a Tibetan pronunciation, meaning "moonlight city" and "a castle built on stones." The ancient town is built along the mountain, with stone-paved roads following the natural terrain. To this day, even hoof prints can still be seen on the stone roads, relics left by ancient horse caravans over time. The architectural layout of the ancient town resembles an eight-petal lotus, with Moonlight Square at its center, surrounded by rustic Tibetan-style wooden houses where locals live peacefully. To the west of the square stands Great Turtle Mountain, also known as Dukezong Ancient Town - Turtle Mountain Park,GuishanThe top features the world's largest prayer wheel, which holds a Guinness World Record. Dukezong Ancient Town - northwest side of Guishan ParkSifang StreetEvery evening, the Tibetan Guozhuang dance always attracts a large number of tourists to join in. If you happen to encounter it, be sure to participate in this joyful experience. The courtyard on the north side of Moonlight Square is the "Diqing Prefecture Red Army Long March Museum." At the entrance of the museum stands the Central Town Hall, built during the Qing Dynasty, also known asScripture hall, the architectural style blends Han, Tibetan, and Naxi elements, offering considerable aesthetic value. South of the Long March Museum stands the Diqing Prefecture Museum, displaying Neolithic artifacts and Tibetan medical exhibits—worth a visit for observation. Most of the residences in the ancient town have been converted into inns, restaurants, and shops. The shops sell local specialties like Tibetan knives, yak meat, and Tibetan accessories. The meals in restaurants are mostly Sichuan cuisine and Tibetan dishes, with yak meat hotpot, butter tea, and tsampa being must-tries.Shangri-La · 2km from downtown

Located in the northwestern part of Shangri-La County, Napa Sea is a seasonal lake in the plateau. The four seasons of Napa Sea have their own characteristics. In the late summer and early autumn, it is the rainy season. At this time, the water is large, and the Napa Sea is a large lake. The summer water is full, the grass grows with small flowers, and the sheep, cattle, and horses graze in groups, blending with the grasslands. The autumn grasslands are golden and the snow peaks are reflected in the lake. In the dry season of winter and spring, the lake surface shrinks or even dried up, turning into a large swamp.Shangri-La · 4.2km from downtown

Abujicuo is located on a hillside at an altitude of about 4,200 meters, surrounded by snow-capped mountains on three sides, and looks like a drop of dew falling on the "lotus petal" mountain. The plateau azaleas blooming all over the lake and the alpine vegetation complement each other, and the original ecological beauty unfolds like a three-dimensional picture scroll. Abujicuo is located in Xiaozhongdian, Shangri-La. From Shangri-La to Lijiang, turn right at Shechi Bridge after about 9 kilometers and enter the Abujicuo section.Shangri-La · 27.8km from downtown

Haba Snow Mountain

5.8
4.8/5
119 reviews
Haba Snow Mountain is located in Shangri-La, Diqing, in northwestern Yunnan, with its main peak at an elevation of 5,396 m. The peak is covered in snow year-round, facing Yulong Snow Mountain across the Jinsha River and Tiger Leaping Gorge. In the Naxi language, "Haba" means "flower of gold." In local legend, it and Yulong Snow Mountain are considered brother mountains, with the Jinsha River rushing between them, carving out the deep Tiger Leaping Gorge. Compared to the famous Yulong, Haba is less commercially developed and retains a more rugged, wild atmosphere. You can see its snow-capped peaks while hiking along Tiger Leaping Gorge. The massive elevation difference creates a tiered vertical landscape: at the lower levels are primitive spruce and fir forests draped with usnea, transitioning upward to alpine meadows and scree slopes, and finally to the snow and ice above the snow line. Scattered throughout the mountains are several alpine lakes formed by glaciers and snowmelt. A representative one is "Black Sea," with its deep, dark green water surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The hiking route to Black Sea is also a popular light outdoor activity in this area. Every May and June, alpine rhododendrons are in full bloom, with different varieties blooming in succession at different altitudes. The sea of flowers and the snow-capped peaks reflect each other; walking through the flowers while looking up at the snow is a highly recognizable flower-viewing experience in the Haba area. In the mountaineering community, Haba is known as an entry-level snow mountain. Climbing activities have long used Haba Village at the foot of the mountain as a base, and many enthusiasts choose it as their destination for their first attempt at snow mountain climbing. The weather in high-altitude areas is changeable, and the elevation difference is significant, so both hiking and climbing should be done within your capabilities. Before setting off, it is advisable to pay attention to local management requirements and confirm accessible areas before arranging your itinerary.Shangri-La · 70.6km from downtown

Dafo Temple Prayer Wheel

5.8
4.5/5
105 reviews
Dafo Temple Prayer Wheel is located at the top of Guishan Hill, the highest point of Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La. Also known as the "Jixiang Shengchuang" (Auspicious Victory Banner), it was built in 2002 to commemorate the renaming of Zhongdian County to Shangri-La County and is now a highly recognizable landmark on the ancient town's skyline. Crafted with pure copper and gold plating, it stands over 20m tall—roughly equivalent to a five-story building—and weighs dozens of tons. Under the plateau sun, the entire wheel shines brilliantly, standing side by side with the Dafo Temple and the Vajra Mandala Hall at the top of the hill. A closer look at the wheel reveals its intricate design: the upper part of the wall features relief carvings of the four great Bodhisattvas—Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Avalokiteshvara, and Ksitigarbha—while the lower part is carved with the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism. Inside, it houses over a million mantras, the six-syllable mantra, and more than 10 tons of Buddhist treasures. According to Tibetan custom, the prayer wheel should be pushed in a clockwise direction. Devotees believe that each full rotation is equivalent to reciting all the mantras contained within. There is a handrail around the base of the prayer wheel. Due to its massive size, it often takes a dozen people working together to make it turn slowly. This experience of working with strangers to turn the wheel is a highlight of visiting Guishan Hill. From the side of Moonlight Square, you can climb the steps to the top of the hill, where you can also overlook the layered Tibetan-style houses of Dukezong Ancient Town. When the lights come on at night, the gilded wheel is particularly dazzling, making it a highly recognizable scene in the ancient town's night view.Shangri-La · 2.1km from downtown

Dukezong Ancient Town-Guishan Park

5.7
4.6/5
194 reviews
Dukezong Ancient Town-Guishan Park is located on Daguishan Hill in the urban area of Shangri-La. First built during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, it serves as the highest point of Dukezong Ancient Town. The park is built along the hillside; as you climb the stone steps, you will find the three-story Chaoyang Pavilion standing atop the hill. Leaning against the railing, you can take in the panoramic view of the ancient town's layered Tibetan-style roofs and the distant mountains; at the foot of the hill lies the ancient Guishan Well, which once provided water for the entire town. In the past, young women carrying water would gather here in the early morning, creating a gentle and heartwarming scene in the ancient town. Another main attraction on the hill is a gilded prayer wheel that stands five or six stories high. The body of the wheel is made of pure copper with gold plating, featuring reliefs of the four great Bodhisattvas—Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Avalokiteshvara, and Ksitigarbha—on the upper part, and the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism carved on the lower part. Inside the wheel are millions of mantras, the six-syllable mantra, and various Buddhist treasures. This prayer wheel was built to commemorate the renaming of Zhongdian County to Shangri-La and has since become a highly recognizable landmark on the ancient town's skyline. There is a handrail around the base of the prayer wheel. According to local custom, it should be pushed in a clockwise direction. Due to its massive size, it requires multiple people to push it together, so feel free to lend a hand to fellow travelers nearby if there are few people around. Guishan is located on a plateau at an altitude of over 3,000m. Although the stone steps are not long, it is easy to get out of breath, so take your time when climbing to the top. Dukezong means "Moonlight City" in Tibetan. If you go up the hill in the evening, you can overlook the rooftops of the ancient town during the day and also wait for the night view as the lights gradually turn on.Shangri-La · 2.2km from downtown
Xiaozhongdian Flower Sea

Xiaozhongdian Flower Sea

101 reviews
Xiaozhongdian Flower Sea is located on the main route from Lijiang to Shangri-La. It is a natural pasture in the high-altitude basin area on both sides of the road, with yaks and Tibetan villages scattered across the rolling meadows. From late May to mid-June each year, wild rhododendrons bloom in vast stretches here. A sea of purple-red flowers stretches from the roadside to the foot of the mountains, dotted with various highland flowers and plants such as Gesang flowers and wolfsbane. It attracts many passing travelers to stop and take photos, and it is also a popular spot for wedding photography. This is not an enclosed scenic area, but rather open pastures on both sides of the road. You can see large fields of flowers just by standing on the roadside, and walking deep into the flower sea feels like stepping onto a giant floral carpet. After the arrival of fall, the main attraction changes to wolfsbane—this highland plant turns from green to red between late September and October, dyeing the meadows a fiery red. Contrasting with the distant mountains and cottages, it is an iconic scene of fall in Shangri-La. Please note that some pastures belong to surrounding villages. When taking photos, please pay attention to on-site signs and respect local arrangements.Shangri-La · 26.8km from downtown

The first bay of the Yangtze River is located in Shigu Town, Lijiang. Here, the rolling Yangtze River was blocked by the cliffs and turned into a "V" shaped big bend, which formed the famous Yangtze River First Bay. The surface of the river is as smooth as a mirror. The two sides of the river are the green hills, the neat farmland and the villages and towns in the south of the Yangtze River. It is amazing to have this view on the plateau.Shangri-La · >100km from downtown

We were picked up by a private car, and the place felt like a self-entertaining hot pot restaurant; it was packed. There were local performances to watch, and the host was quite humorous. They gave us hada (ceremonial scarves) at the entrance, and the recommended butter tea was delicious.

The horseback riding experience on the grassland was quite cost-effective. We rode for almost an hour, with someone leading the horses. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Napa Sea Grassland, and the children had a great time.

I was fortunate enough to see Meili Snow Mountain and the three sacred mountains of Daocheng Yading. The guides were all very professional. I am quite heavy, and the guides accompanied me the whole way, helping me on some of the more dangerous sections. My teammates also encouraged me the whole time, which helped me complete my first high-altitude trek. I am really grateful to the guides!

In late April and early May, the moss and grass aren't very green yet, the lake is beautiful, and the weather is unpredictable, offering a taste of all four seasons. It can rain one minute, then be sunny the next; clouds drift across the mountainside, then disperse to reveal snow-capped peaks. Remember to bring a raincoat. There are rockfalls on the road from Shangri-La, and snow accumulation on the mountains. Drive carefully near tunnels as there may be ice on the road.

- Magnificent Natural Landscape: Haba Snow Mountain's main peak, at 5396 meters, is the fourth highest peak in Yunnan Province. Its summit is perpetually snow-capped, its peak towering and majestic. It boasts my country's southernmost maritime temperate glacier and preserves ancient glacial relics such as horn peaks, arêtes, and U-shaped valleys. Furthermore, the mountain features numerous moraine lakes, such as the Black Sea and the Round Sea, offering captivating scenery. - Abundant Ecological Resources: Located in the heart of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage site, Haba Snow Mountain experiences significant altitude variations, resulting in seven vertical climate zones and a typical vertical vegetation landscape. This has fostered a rich diversity of biodiversity, including 102 species of mammals, 1125 species of vascular plants, 186 species of birds, and many rare and endangered species.

At the end of Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La is Moonlight Square. The hill to the east of the square is the famous Guishan Park in Shangri-La. The park consists of buildings such as prayer wheels, Big Buddha Temple (Chaoyang Tower), Han Temple, Red Army Long March Museum and Diqing History Museum. Standing on Guishan Park, you can look up and see the majestic and endless snow-capped mountains, which is very spectacular. Looking down, you can see the whole city of Shangri-La. There are no high-rise buildings here. The smoke from the city and the shimmering water of Qinglongtan can be seen in full view.

Entering Shangri-La and reaching the plateau dam area, Xiaozhongdian is a village with an altitude of 3,500 meters. The terrain is suddenly open and the scenery is magnificent. Meadows, flower clusters, barley racks, yaks are constantly passing by on both sides of the road... Unfortunately, the time was short and I was unable to taste real barley wine, tsampa, and butter tea, experience the Tibetan dwellings and customs with earth and wood planks, watch the ferocious "Eastern Divine Dog" Tibetan Mastiff like a lion, and experience the processing of the Kawa and Kazhu Tibetan knives that can cut through iron.
