Reviews: 1-day private chartered tour to Ipoh for history and food with round-trip from Penang

Highly recommend our tour guide Ken! Our Ipoh day trip was a perfect experience! Ken was gentle and patient, drove smoothly and safely, and kept the car clean and tidy. He knew Ipoh very well, knew all the must-see spots and local delicacies, and adjusted the itinerary to our preferences, avoiding any rush. He provided detailed explanations of Ipoh's tin mining history and culture, took us to classic attractions like the Old Town murals, Concubine Lane, and the cave temples, and even recommended popular local dishes like bean sprout chicken and white coffee, helping us avoid tourist traps. His photography skills were excellent; he proactively helped take candid photos, and he allowed ample time at each attraction, making the entire trip relaxed and enjoyable with no forced shopping. For a hassle-free Ipoh experience, Ken is the one to choose. I'll definitely choose him again next time I'm in Malaysia!

I had a very difficult experience: the tour was supposed to start at 9:30 instead of 8:30. There was an accident on the road, and the drive took almost 4 hours instead of 2:30. We first visited a cave—it was beautiful, but we couldn't decide whether we could only do the dry part or whether the lower route was also accessible. Then we went to the castle. The driver basically just takes you to the designated spot on the route and waits in the car. There's no tour, no explanation of the place. The driver himself is nice, communicative, and diligent, but it's not a tour, not a guided tour, just a transfer to the designated spots. From the castle, we went to town, where we only had time to eat before we had to move on. But I really wanted to see the town. Then, for some reason, we went to the train station for 10 minutes, and then to a mirror lake. In the end, when we arrived at the lake, there were 15 minutes left before it closed. The boat rides were over, and I would have loved to have taken one. All this points to problems with route planning. It would be logical to leave the city for later; nothing will be closed there, and you can wander around.

I met Ah Wei, a talkative driver-guide who arranged everything perfectly. We visited all the attractions mentioned in the itinerary and even saw several bats. I was particularly impressed by Kelley Fort and Mirror Lake. Lunch was at Tianjin Ice Room near Concubine Lane; the food was delicious and inexpensive. Chatting with Ah Wei taught me a lot about Malaysian culture and customs. I'm also grateful to him for running around taking photos for me!
