Things to do in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, tucked into the forested mountains of northern Thailand, is a former Lanna kingdom capital. With ancient temples, misty hills, and artisan villages, Chiang Mai offers a peaceful contrast to the bustle of Bangkok. Chiang Mai weather varies by season, with the cool, dry months from November to February being ideal for outdoor adventures and temple visits. Top things to do in Chiang Mai include exploring the Old City, visiting mountaintop Doi Suthep, and wandering Chiang Mai night markets, where food, crafts, and local charm come together every evening. One highlight is the city shines during the Chiang Mai Lantern Festival, when thousands of glowing lanterns float into the night sky—a truly magical sight.

Reviews: Chiang Rai Day Tour from Chiang Mai :Red, White and Blue Temples
Guest User2026-05-15
We had a wonderful day with our tour guide, Ms. Som. She was extremely attentive, explained everything superbly, and showed us the places with great enthusiasm. We were particularly impressed by her thoughtfulness during a sudden downpour: she immediately gathered all the guests and provided us with umbrellas so that the day could continue without a care in the world. We were also delighted with the choice of destinations. A highlight was the Red Temple with its Buddha statue—a real gem, as we would say. The driver was also exceptionally good and safe, which is something we haven't always experienced in Thailand. We highly recommend this tour, especially with the visit to the Red Temple. Ms. Som, thank you so much for this fantastic day!

The tour only includes transportation; everything else is self-service due to the distance. You'll need to plan your own activities and activities once you arrive. There's no guide; you're on your own. To take photos with the elephants, you'll need to buy small bananas (100 taels each) to feed them. Meals are also served to the elephants and are at your own expense.

The places we visited were all absolutely beautiful, and the highlight of the trip is undoubtedly a must-see. The food was also consistently excellent, plentiful, and served in a wonderful setting. However, since this wasn't our first trip to Thailand, we'd like to offer a few objective points of criticism. Our driver's driving style wasn't for everyone, even though he was always in complete control of the vehicle. The guide was rather reserved with facts and general explanations—not a problem for us personally, but still worth mentioning. Furthermore, we got the impression that some of the stops were made more out of personal interest than as part of the tour. Despite these comments, we still recommend the tour overall, provided these minor issues don't bother you.

This tour was great value for the price! I became friends with the guide, and he was very kind, even giving us fruit along the way. There was a lot of long-distance travel, so it would have been perfect if the van had been a little more comfortable!
