Reviews: Beijing W Town + Great Wall At Simatai 1-day tour - optional private tour with hotel transfers within the 5th Ring Road

TLDR: Great day trip experience to this nice resort and attraction beside a section of the Great Wall. Dec is their low shoulder period, so not all shops and shows are open. Best to come in spring or autumn where the lake is still accessible. It was frozen when I was there. Description as is, simple to redeem. Driver was nice, trip took 2 hours to reach, spent the whole day walking thru the town then going up the Great Wall. You could also stay for 2 days 1 night watch the shows, walk the town in the evening and see the Great Wall lighted up at night. Note: lots of walking required
Reviews: Gubei Water Town Day Trip - & Optional Night Tour of Simatai Great Wall & Optional Lunch

A wonderful excursion, we absolutely loved it! Everything was exactly as described. We purchased the boats and daytime cable car separately for 80 and 160 yuan per person, respectively. I highly recommend it. The tour price also included lunch in a hot pot, which was also excellent. We visited Gubei on November 16th, and we were lucky with the weather (sunny all day). The temperature was 3-4 degrees Celsius during the day and 0 - -2 degrees Celsius after sunset. Wrap up as warm as possible, as VKS is not only cold but also very windy. Our guide, Roberta, was wonderful; she explained everything in detail, and if needed, she'd be happy to provide backup and assistance. You can buy a super-warm fleece jacket from the bus driver for 50 yuan. If you decide to take a taxi back to Beijing, it'll cost around 400-500 yuan.

Thank you to our tour guide, Cheche, for making our day so enjoyable. Before we set off, the guide explained the itinerary very clearly, gave us a history lesson about the Simatai Great Wall on the bus, and patiently made sure everyone knew how to explore the area after we got off. The scenic area is truly beautiful, with chubby and adorable cats everywhere. The off-season meant fewer crowds, which made it easier to take photos. Personally, I think the Simatai Great Wall is a must-see; it's truly breathtaking.

We communicated entirely via WeChat, and the guide, Liu, was incredibly sweet! She even worried about me making it to the bus, knowing I didn't speak English or Chinese! I took the evening pass; you could upgrade to a day pass on the bus, but I paid extra for the day pass, plus the cable car, plus the boat ride, for an additional 280 yuan. I loved being on the wall both day and night; they were two completely different experiences! The first time, we took the cable car during the day, reached the 5th tower, then climbed up to the 10th tower (it's not easy, but worth it!), then I went down to the 1st tower and back down without the cable car (so it was possible to only take the uphill pass for the day). You can also fly down from the bottom for 80 yuan (another traveler told me this later). In the evening, I immediately climbed up to the 8th tower (it wasn’t easy), but since everyone was running to the 5th tower initially, my appearance was a reward for my efforts) and then I went down to the 5th tower and then left on the cable car.

Everything is great, the city is pleasant, the wall is cool and very beautiful. I recommend taking a boat ride; it's a very scenic ride and you can also see the city in the evening. The only thing I recommend is to definitely take the cable car both ways; we didn't take the return trip. And in the end, we overpaid a lot. We could have gotten it for 180 yuan roundtrip, but our guide Lucy didn't warn us that there wouldn't be enough time to walk down, and besides, we were very tired. However, for another group, the guide explained everything in more detail about the descent. In the end, we paid 130 yuan for the ascent + 130 yuan for the descent (260 for the whole trip). We overpaid by 80 yuan. If you go on your own, you'll pay even more; all tours with a guide are much cheaper. They only accept Alipay; they don't accept cards or cash.
