Shocking experience! Firstly the trip booked stated 2 breakfast plus 2 evening meals , this was not the case with the hotel stating it was bed and breakfast only, I would have paid the lower rate if I knew this ! The room was then absolutely filthy and had a mattress at least 5 years past its best , solution to this was a mattress topper that really didn't help... The walls are paper thin and the noise from above was just ridiculous, sounded like a clog dancing contest .. Worst bit of the whole stay was the bathroom , you needed a shower after leaving the room never mind as you were in there , the floor tiles were all smashed and sharp and the grout was just black ( lifted the shower mat from the floor after taking a shower and it was filthy ) there was mold all over the skirting board and the shower didn't work correctly ( I have a video to show ) The room ( room 30 ) needs taking apart and starting again ... nobody should be allowed to stay in there ) I will be contacting the hotel separately and I believe a full or partial refund should be offered !

I unfortunately don't drive so had a bit of a hike i.e. walk to the hotel, if I had knowledge of local taxi firm I could've been faster.

The photos of this property on any booking platforms have either been photo shopped or they are very old. I have uploaded how the building really looks. It looks run down on the outside and it's very run down on the inside. The carpet in the room had been vacuumed but it was so old there were multiple grime patches where the dirt was really intertwined. The bathroom was old although that in itself didn't bother me having no hot water on the second night at all and no answer from reception really ****** after a long day hiking. The bathroom had been cleaned apart from hair in the plug. The bed linen was mostly clean apart from one stan. The room was huge but it's just a standard double bed. The window frames were rotting and the window lock was broken. There was mold around the window (see photos). Breakfast wasn't great. The lady on duty first gave us a dirty table. When I explained it was dirty and asked to sit somewhere else she replied very sharply she did not realise it was dirty, sat us on a table covered in crumbs then proceed to complain about other hotel guests being impatient. We gave it a miss the second morning as decided we'd rather pay somewhere else even though the hotel breakfast was included. This place is probably fine if your in the area for work and just want cheap accommodation. It's not a nice place for a break away. I actually found that the hotel is up for sale so I suspect no improvements will be done by the current owners now and maybe that's why the staff were a tad grouchy.

As others have said: needs serious TLC. Such a shame as the venue has masses of potential if it’s given the attention it deserves. Stayed in Room 6 for 2 nights from 30th May. Window frames are rotten so you cannot open them and have to rely on a portable fan. We found black mould to be visible throughout the room (even on the carpet beside the bed - found whilst trying to find a plug). Coffee making facilities are present, if you like to have previous guests leftovers around the cups and spoons. Thick layers of dust on surfaces. Toilet was hanging off the wall so had to balance so you didn’t fall off. Bathroom taps on the sink were very loose. Bed was surprisingly comfortable. Restaurant/bar - hardly ever manned by staff so any issues, you will have to find them which is normally at reception. Food was subpar given the pricing. Evening meals weren’t great (deep fried Brie was cold in the middle, chicken was overcooked and dry). If you are lucky, you may even get a few curly hairs thrown in for good measure - needless to say, it completely put me off my food. Breakfast was by far the better meal but even that wasn’t the best. Glasses were dirty, cutlery needed a wipe down with napkins before use. Wallpaper is falling off everywhere throughout. It’s in need of a full refurbishment, some staff could do with some training and it needs a deep clean. It is a shame that this beautiful building and its gardens aren’t given the full attention it deserves as it could be an amazing place.

This hotel was bought break was a present for us. The looks nothing like the photo on their site. It needs a lot of TLC. In its day I’m sure it was a beautiful hotel. The only good thing is the staff. They were very nice . I actually feel sorry for them because there the first people to get all the complaints thrown at them. They did understand my complaints . The so called balcony was rusty and had debris on it plus weeds growing out of the wall. It wasn’t the cleanest of rooms although the sheets were, and the bed was very comfortable. The furniture has seen better days. The bathroom wasn’t as clean has it should have been or the toilet hinges. They need some mildew cleaner. The stretchy shower hand held lead was full of mildew . I would never have used that in a million years. There was dust and cobwebs on the settee creases . We were thinking of asking if we could have stopped another night . I Wouldn’t have stayed there another night to be honest or ever again. Breakfast was ok but not a lot of choice . Such a shame for such a beautiful building. Even the entrance isn’t inviting with dead flowers in plant pots and debris around the entrance . This is supposed to be a bespoke hotel. A big thank you to the lovely staff . Let’s hope in months to come this hotel comes back into its former glory . It deserves it. The grounds are beautiful and will even be better when it’s all done. I do have a lot of photos which I showed the staff

I am a semi regular now with work and have to say this place now feels like home from home during the week. Evening meals are great with huge portions and the staff are unbelievably helpful with everything and anything. The grounds are fantastic making it a lovely setting and the fells are only a stone's throw away. Top place and I will continue to return.....

Wonderful. So comfortable and friendly and helpful with a really excellent breakfast and dinner. Nothing is too much trouble. Comfortable beds, proper large fluffy towels, a lovely garden and plenty of parking. Ideal location for Ennerdale lake and the surrounding area, which is lovely. Whitehave is a gem of a town. We have already booked our next stay.

Currently staying on a two night package. Great value for money. Ignore the negative review, some people just like to moan. Yes the building is old but not everything needs to be brand new etc. Food is AMAZING and the whole vibe of the place is great. Staff are AMAZING, nothing is too much trouble, they just done stop. Really enjoyed our stay and we will be back.

Friendly and helpful staff, great dinner, comfortable beds, but rooms need a bit of care. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful - from the Reception staff to cleaners and restaurant staff. We stayed on an all inclusive basis, so had unlimited tea and coffee and wine/beer in the evening. Lunch and dinner were great - fabulous choice and quality for dinner, with nice soup and sandwiches for lunch. Breakfast was fine, good selection but the quality wasn't as good as dinner - hash browns were rather greasy and poached egg tasted quite vinegary one day. The staff were very accommodating of my husband who is intolerant of carbohydrates (bread/potatoes etc). The bedrooms were comfortable, the bed and pillows were great, but the rooms needed a bit of attention. A lot of the hotel doors had an extra hole that had been filled, near the handle, the bedside light was so dim you couldn't ready by it and furniture was a little dated with just 1 bedside table in a triple bedded room - but this all costs a lot of ££ to get sorted. The kettle/tea/coffee/biscuits were good, the rooms were clean and tidy and the bathroom was pleasant enough. Great hotel for a couple of nights away, close to some lovely local spots and walks. Would recommend staying here.
