St Nicholas Hotel

Absolutely wonderful hotel all round. The room and balcony exceeded my expectations, and really pleased me, and my standards are very high and I submitted some specific requests. Top floor, room 904, advised now this one and 910 very popular. Both the room and balcony a really nice size too. Lovely facilities. Nice view of Colchester castle etc. Nice communal areas. The George hotel communal areas are wonderful too and lovely breakfast, great choice, beautifully cooked, and I requested to sit elsewhere as so many beautiful options, and for me generally and as need my own space, and peace as much as possible, and am still very aware re.COVID-19, I eventually arranged to sit in the lovely courtyard. Too busy and noisy for me in the main restaurant. Exemplary staff. I also really liked the fact that you could switch the bathroom ventilator off, otherwise it comes on when you put the light on. Of course one should always switch it on when using the shower and keep it on briefly afterwards. My first Surya experience. Sublime.

Sofia (‘manager’ if you could call her that !) is nothing but a bully, leaving a poor young PREGNANT girl by herself to show me pictures of restaurants she has been to recently and photos of her puppy ! The young girl (Shannan was her name I believe) was swept off her feet, running around doing a ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING and doing all she could to make my stay wonderful but unfortunately the stay was ruined by Sofia! when Shannan asked for help from Sofia (so called MANAGER!!!) she basically laughed and carried on doing nothing !, Sofia offered no help what so-ever and she should have a serious talking to ! I also heard her talking about Staff members personal lives and antics to other staff members which is not called for what so ever and is not what Customers and guests should be hearing as it is their personal life and she SHOULD NOT be disclosing any of that to anybody at all ! I stayed in February and she was the same, I travel for work often and I often stay at the dragonfly but even since the So called “Manager” Sofia started the place had gone down hill ! Shanna is an absolute star and should be praised to high heaven ! Thank you so much Shannan for going above and beyond for me and many many others !
The Blue Anchor

Have visited the blue anchor a couple of times now and have not stopped raving about it to friends and family etc. who have also visited from my amazing reviews. Lovely food, great staff, so we thought. I called on 22 November 2023, and can see from my call log that I have a 5 minute phone call with them. I double checked I could use my Tastecard whilst booking my next visit on 5 December 2023, I triple checked as there was 6 of us coming and money is tight at the moment. The young man on the phone reassured me that I will be able to use my tastecard, he even took my tastecard number down as I read it out. Fast forward to 5 December 2023, we have a lovely meal, all have a starter main and dessert as we had been promised the 2 for 1 deal with the tastecard. Go to pay, and they tell me that the tastecard is not applicable. I cannot tell you how upset I was. It was embarrassing. I could not afford to pay for this whole meal when I had been promised the deal. The manager was rude, did not apologise for any miscommunication etc. when it was his staff telling me that we would get the deal. He explained that it said on the tastecard app “Not applicable in December” but when ringing up and TRIPLE checking with YOUR staff member, they reassured me it would. They then were assuming that I was lying about giving my tastecard number? The most awful customer service I think I have come across. To think I was recommending the pub to so many people, I am truly gutted and so upset that what was meant to be a lovely family meal turned into nothing but stress due to the cost of it. Will now be telling those friends and family not to return. Appalled by the customer service at this place.
Holiday Inn Express Colchester

I am writting this message now crying with two young and very disappointed, crying children. I am a single mum, who managed to save a hotel stay for the Queen's Jubilee weekend, next week. We paid the money several months ago. First I booked with Bookings.com then through another site as first one had been cancelled. Several months after paying for the hotel through the second site, just 4 days before our holiday I got an email stating that it has been cancelled by you as it is overbooked. A few weeks ago I even called your head office and I was told that I had an eixting booking! No mention of any overbooking or cancellation. Now it is cancelled and I won't even get my money back before the end of my planned holiday. How dare are you?????? Taking people's money then cancelling at the last minutes. Poor children and poor me, as a single mum who cannot rely on anyone and we have gone through so much bad things in life and now our holiday has been ruined, too! How can we book another hotel now, it's too late!! Message states that you overbooked, I am sure you did it on purpose. I will call the head office tomorrow, we are so so disappointed. You used our money for so many months and cancelled just 4 days before, am not wondering why Bookings.com stopped cooperating with you!!!
Star Anglia Hotel

The hotel is small, simple, there is a bus stop at the door, and it is very close to the town center. It is very convenient to walk to the town. The English breakfast is very good (the chef is an older woman, one looks at the restaurant, likes her). While eating and looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I feel quiet.

Booked this hotel last minute. On arrival I was met by Hannah who was absolutely amazing. Showed me to my room and made sure i had everything I needed. When I asked about where to eat, Hannah did not say straight away in our restaurant but she explained all the places around this location. What I liked was she didn’t give bad review on any of them. For that reason I decided to eat in the restaurant of the hotel. Wow glad I did, absolutely amazing. I had the ribs to start, beautiful and the slaw was the best. For my mains I had the crispy belly pork. What can I say, this was another level. It was one of the best meals I have had this year. I met Aron the chief afterwards and what a gentleman. Aron’s food is incredible. Highly recommend his food. Food and accommodation is first class. 10/10 on both.
