The good points first. The shower room was very well designed and the breakfast was really nice. A good selection of food including fruit, cold meats, cheese. Also fresh coffee. Not so good was the room. We were in what the man in Reception told us was the only twin room (I was staying with a friend). The room was out the back at the end of a sort of kitchen one storey extension. It was tiny and not our idea of boutique - unless you're thinking of those shops that call themselves boutique but just sell lots of cheap clothes that fall apart when you wear them. The beds were lumpy to put it mildly. They didn't have full covers but just squares of some protective fabric that was ridged around the outside so not very comfy - the sort of thing you might put on a child's bed in case of accidents maybe. My bed had a large flat piece of wood between the mattress and the box bedstead. We didn't know why, maybe the bedstead was damaged? The mattresses were dreadful. Honestly. I don't usually write a review if its bad as I don't like to affect someone's business, but in this case I decided to. When we asked the man in Reception where the 'Boutique' was in this experience, he said that it was in the main house. I have checked on the site and it says 'The entire unit located on ground floor'. This does not tell you that it is not in the main hotel - where the rooms may be very nice, I don't know. They look OK in the photos. Point is, even if this room was not meant to be up to the standard possibly of the others, it showed very little care or attention to any sort of detail. PS whoever screwed the bedheads to the wall, the one on the left is crooked. Maybe a spirit level would help? We would have been happy with an adequate room. We weren't expecting anything out of the ordinary really. But this room was not adequate, and first rule of any hotel, make sure your beds are halfway comfortable.

We arrived for an afternoon tea on 17th April, the hotel being easily accessible and just round the corner from the High Street in the city. We were greeted by James and Daniel and looked after extremely well. First to arrives was the fizz. Then, after few minutes, a filling selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones, all very fresh and well presented, were delivered to the table with panache by Daniel. This was all rounded off with a tea and a coffee. We have to say this was the best afternoon tea we have had in Colchester. A very enjoyable visit. Well done.

Nice hotel in a great location. Room was comfy but not as clean as it should have been and the hotel needs a little maintenance but still a nice place to stay. The staff were welcoming. Watch out for the narrow access to the car park... limited amount of parking at rear.

Highly recommend. Stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed a good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed. The room was spotless, and the bathroom was cleaned daily . Fresh water was provided daily throughout our stay. The continental breakfast had something for everyone, so much choice. Can highly recommend the scrambled egg. The staff were lovely from the moment you arrived. Look forward to our next visit.

We had been given a Buyagift voucher and decided to use it for an afternoon tea at the Colchester Boutique Hotel. The hotel is beautiful and has so much history. It is so convenient for the town and all it has to offer. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Daniel was very attentive and seated us at the table in the bay window. Great for people watching. We were then given a glass of prosecco which was very welcome. After a few minutes, Daniel arrived with the afternoon tea. The food was lovely and fresh. It was beautifully presented. It always surprises us just how filling an afternoon tea is. It was delicious. We finished with a coffee which was perfect. We would recommend using your gift vouchers at the Colchester Boutique Hotel. A great experience.

What a fantastic find. Host and other staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Room was beautifully decorated with everything we needed. Beds and pillows very comfy . The room price includes a continental breakfast which was amazing, so much choice and all fresh . Ideal location for the city centre .

Daniel & Roland are amazing, friendly hosts who looked after us from start to finish. Our 3rd party booking went awry & we upgraded to the 4 poster bedroom - well worth the extra - a quiet, cosy room. The room facilities were well explained by Daniel & everything was replenished for the next day. The continental breakfast had everything you could think of from cereals to cold meat platter et al. Roland is a mine of information for local amenities - the hotel is very well situated for shopping & eateries. The city centre parking is invaluable - just make sure you square with the courtyard entrance though. Daniel & Roland made sure I had a wonderful birthday experience and I would definitely recommend a stay.

What can I say. We had an amazing time here enjoying a fabulous afternoon tea and the wonderful company of delightful and friendly owner James. Rooms are so beautiful, each one full of its own charming character, spotless and welcoming. Great bar and outside space. Interior design of this historical Colchester building is lovely and well thought out. Food was delicious - tasty and very fresh, one of the nicest we have had (and we have had many). You are made to feel extremely welcome from the minute you walk through the door and we were very reluctant to leave. Nothing was too much trouble. My family have lived in Colchester our entire lives and would very much recommend this gorgeous hotel as the place to stay in Colchester x
